Kenyan or Saharan?

We have had Derp for 2.5 years, and are confused by his very small size and regular hunger strikes. His husbandry is fine. 3 inches of aspen, constant access to water, hot side 93, cold side 70s. Handled tops once a month, generally less.

His weights are as below over time, weight in grams (didn't start tracking weight until owning for 10 months):

2024/12/14 38
2025/01/31 36
2025/05/27 35
2025/08/17 35
2025/09/12 38
2025/10/27 40
2025/11/18 43
2026/01/02 44
2026/01/21 44
2026/03/12 42
2026/05/11 39
2026/06/21 42

We just learned that Saharan Sand Boas were a thing and that this would be a completely normal weight. Obviously he's a morph, but don't recall what it was exactly called, but was sold to us as a KSB. Any help is appreciated!

*forgot to mention he has plenty of energy and isn't lethargic at all. Shows no signs of being underweight.

Kenyan or Saharan?

We ordered the snake as a Kenyan, but I have noticed a lot of Saharan traits and wanted to get opinions. Definitely female.

Opinion on Set Up?

Got this baby about 3-4 weeks ago, and they’re about a year old. Been handled about three times so far (one was to redo their tank) and has been eating great. We got them a 40gal tank, I just want to know if the humidity/temperature levels were good:) I have a mix of sand and repti-soil from petsmart in there now(I do not frequently buy from petsmart that’s just my closest pet supplies store) and currently have some coconut fiber drying out to add. The dried plants spread around are moss to give them more hides and help with humidity. Any advice or opinions is great :) there’s also a chance this tank will be upgraded in a year since my baby boy might actually be a girl! So no fret about size.

I’ve also heard some sand boas like climbing! Should I add anything for them to climb on? My baby seems to mainly enjoy burrowing but it’s worth an ask.

Thank you Reddit!

Help with feeding

Hello! I'm a new owner, not to snakes but to Kenyan sand boas. I recently got mine from a man who has to urgently give him away, and he was taking him back and forth to work every single day and he lived in Aspen, so I can't imagine he's had the greatest life.

My concern is with feeding - after he got his deep substrate he's been burrowing and tunnelling like crazy, and I can't seem to find him ever with his head poking out of the substrate as I've seen, I've tried to feed him before (f/t, not live) and he didn't come up for it. What can I do to get him to come up? Do I just wait?

I apologize for the lack of pictures, I didn't want to handle him much while he was being settled in, he was very clearly stressed. I believe he's the anery morph? His name is Cow, he's white with brown splotches all over

She’s arboreal now.

My girl, Godiva, absolutely loves climbing.

She just moved into her forever home from her quarantine enclosure. When putting together her enclosure I provided her with tons of climbing opportunities and was thrilled to see her using this one this morning!

Another "My KSB won't eat" post...

Hi all. My Kenyan Sand Boa isn't eating.

My Kenyan Sand Boa female (Gor Gor), has been in my possession since late last year. She's not my first snake, but definitely my first KSB. I brought her home and set her up in a simple quarantine viv on puppy pads, with cool hide, warm hide (with basking stone/thermostat controlled), humid hide and a water bowl. While she was in quarantine, she was eating frozen/thawed for me absolutely fine. She is an adult, so this is not a finicky new baby/transition to f/t situation.

Early March we were taking off on a trip for a long weekend. She ate a small small rat (I had been feeding her weaned rats, however, I had run out so I gave her a small rat and picked the smallest of smalls from my Layne Labs stash). She ate it fine. She pooped afterward a week or so later (I'm sorry I don't have the exact amount of time that passed). After that feeding, she has not eaten for me again. At first I thought because the feeder was larger than what she had been used to that she wasn't hungry at the next feeding. I began to wonder if she was getting stressed from not having substrate to burrow in, and as she was mite free and doing seemingly great, I decided to transition her to substrate. Put several inches of Aspen down, continued using the exact same hides/basking/water bowl setup. I've offered an f/t weaned rat every two weeks since, and she WILL NOT EAT. I've tried during the day. I've tried at night. I've tried simulating movement over the top of the substrate. I've left for 24 hours. I KNOW she's seen and smelled several offerings as I've seen her MOVE OVER the rat. (I've also tried multiple different colors of rat). She is active and burrowing and all over her enclosure (at night - I don't necessarily see her out and about but I see new burrows and dislodged fake plant decor).

Is there anything else I should try before making an appointment with my exotic vet? Is the aspen a poor choice of substrate?

New ksb owner needing advice on future feeding

(i plan on switching his substrate soon before anyone asks lol)
just got this cutie boy unexpectedly rehomed into my care today! The previous owner said he's been eating f/t with no issue. I'm considering trying out reptilinks for him eventually (after hes already consistently taking meals obviously)

Does anyone here have any thoughts or opinions on the reptilinks? The main reason I'm considering it is because my fiance is a bit squeamish about the whole dead mice thing, but ofc whats best for the snake comes first!!

Dehumidifier?

Has anyone gotten a dehumidifier for the room their KSB’s tank is in? I live in New England where it can get quite humid in the summer. I’m having a hard time getting her tank humidity under 45% consistently this whole month, and I’m worried that if it continues to stay at that/sometimes go up to 50% she might get upset somehow. It goes up to 50% on our most humid days (when outside it’s like 85% humidity rip)

First time feeding my Kenyan Sand Boa + Looking for advice on tank reset and F/T transition

On June 19th, I purchased a female Kenyan Sand Boa who was already over 7 months old. After letting her settle in for a week, I tried feeding her a frozen-thawed (F/T) mouse on the night of June 26th. Initially, I tried tapping the mouse on the surface of the substrate to entice her out, but that didn't work. So, I left the mouse on a dish. After over 4 hours, she still hadn't touched it, so I replaced it with a fresh F/T mouse. By 6:00 AM the next morning, it was still uneaten. That evening, I decided to switch to a live mouse. However, to find my sand boa, I ended up completely tearing the enclosure apart, eventually finding her underneath a heavy decor item. I placed the live mouse right in front of her, but she still refused it. I then decided to just leave the live mouse on the dish to see what would happen. After about an hour or so, she successfully ate it!However, I left the tank in a complete mess. I'm not sure if I should fix the enclosure back up right away, or if I should wait a few days to let her digest first. Does anyone have any advice on this? I know for next time I should just leave the live mouse in there and walk away instead of messing up her tank. Also, when I bought her, the breeder mentioned that she wasn't very accepting of frozen-thawed prey and prefers live. Is there a chance I can train her to switch to frozen-thawed? What are the best methods to try? Thanks in advance!

The first color photo shows what the tank looked like before I messed it up, and the second photo shows it after my search, with many items taken out.

I did not feed her in her water dish. However she somehow ended up eating in her water dish

She went from not eating to becoming a teeny food missile. I booped her snoot with the pinkie a couple inches to the right of her dish, and then somehow she got enough air to splash in :P Silly snek

Questioning the sex of my KSB

Was told by the breeder she was a female but at the age of 2.5 years and staying roughly 16-18 inches it leads me to question whether she’s actually a he? I’m curious to see what you all think.

PAM use for sand boas?

Hi! I’m a sand boa keeper (as well as just miscellaneous snake keeper). I have 2 Kenyan sand boas, I’m currently dealing with a mite outbreak in my collection. Neither of my sand boas appear to have mites however I want to use provent-a-mite in their enclosures as a preventative measure. I know some species are sensitive to it and I don’t know if sand boas are one of them. I’m not going to use it unless I can confirm it’s completely safe, was curious if anyone has any info or experience with this?
