SEGA Wondermega

Other than X32 most useful Genesis/MegaDrive console you can have. It covers both cartridges and MegaCD/SegaCD. Yes, you can run US/EU titles but will need the magickeyIII cartridge as well as BIOS hack. Oh, yea also this is the only MegaDrive console with the S-Video out port.

Sega CD pressed repro (not CD-R)

I'm searching for Sega CD industrial pressed CD games. I already have a lot of pressed CDs (silver media). Industrial pressed and identical to original ones in many ways (case, etc). But all of manufacturers are brazilian ones (Projeto Games Retro, MasterRetro, OldGame, OldSchool) and there's a lot of titles I just can't find.

Someone knows other sellers around the globe, or there's only brazilians working on it indeed?

Has anyone had any issues with your CD’s becoming unreadable or not working over time? I found a bunch of Sega CD games in the loft but have no way of testing them. I’d like to sell them but with no way of testing I’m unsure what to do.

I’m currently saving up for a new gaming PC and it would help go towards that

Haven't turned on my Sega Genesis + Sega CD (Model 1s) in 15 years.

They've been unplugged from the wall but are all still hooked up to the old JC Penney 19" CRT TV. Everything has been covered with old, cotton cloths since about 2011.

Had them since 1990 (Genesis M1) and 1993 (Sega CD M1) when I bought them brand new.

Took care of all the games, which I sold off in 2023, with some getting stolen by an unscrupulous consignment shop, but that's a tale for another time.

Do you think the set still works? I don't have immediate access to the setup at the current time, as I have to go back to my parents' place to try them, as well as navigate my old room, which is now used as storage space.

Are Desert Bus physical copies out there?

I don't really mind if they're bootlegged or anything, either, I'd just love a physical edition to play on my actual Sega CD console OG hardware. If it's possible, can anybody point me in the right direction?

Several model 1’s repaired and restored

I’ve been working on several model 1’s for the last few months. I’ve gotten 6 of them back to good working order. Some JVC but mostly Sony. I’ve done everything from a full recap to rebuilding motherboards and CD drives. I’ve used an oscilloscope to check eye patterns and 240p test suite to diagnose any other problems. I haven’t had to change a laser in any of these systems and they all work great. I have changed several IC’s which was usually the problem of the disc not being read properly. All systems have new caps, drive belts, batteries, etc.

Ticking noise with burned cd’s.

Bought some verbatim cd-r’s on amazon and they make this noise in my cd2. Could the disc clamp maybe need adjusted? They play fine but they are ever so slightly thinner. All original sega cd games are fine.

Double joy

Set up my old X-Eye to test my new repro copy of Snatcher. It took a few tries to read but firing up Final Fight CD seemed to knock the cobwebs out. Overjoyed that both console and game work, despite it being at least three years since powering it up last, and this being my first repro. Now I need to set everything up properly and find my Justifier. I only played until I could save, but I’m already outraged that I didn’t play this sooner. Squeezed in a few levels of Trouble Shooter as well.

My only PC runs Vista, and shuts off after 2 minutes, so downloading and/or burning it myself was never an option.

No connection between Genesis and CD

I tested a model 2 Sega CD with my childhood launch model Genesis only to find the CD doesn't boot. Then I tried it with another model 1 Genesis to find the Sega CD booting just fine. It looks like the pins on the defecting Genesis might be the reason why. Is anybody able to confirm this for me? Attached are photos with the fault Genesis's pin slots, and the other picture has both Genesis, the left one is not working with it, the right one works just fine.

I created a custom Sega CD FMV codec: 320×224 fullscreen video at 30 FPS with 22.05 kHz audio!

Hey r/SEGAGENESIS ,

Greetings from Japan! I'm a Mega Drive / Mega-CD fan and developer, and I wanted to share a project I've been working on.

We all know the classic Sega CD FMV experience: tiny windows, low frame rates, and heavily compressed audio. I wanted to push the original hardware to its absolute limits, so I developed a new open-source FMV codec from scratch called CAVC, short for Constraint-Aware Video Codec.

Through extensive optimization for the two 68000 CPUs across the Genesis/Mega Drive and Sega CD, the split RAM architecture, available DMA bandwidth, and the strict 150 KiB/s bandwidth limit of the 1x CD-ROM drive, CAVC achieves the following:

Key Specs & Features

  • Frame rate: 30 FPS 15 FPS and 24 FPS are also supported
  • Resolution: Up to 320×224 in H40 mode, filling the full active display area
  • Audio: 22.05 kHz ADPCM
  • Colors: Dynamic palette switching during playback
  • Target hardware: Unmodified Sega CD / Mega-CD hardware

About the Main Comparison Video

Main comparison video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QXUS11yb9Yg

To show CAVC in action, I put together a split-screen comparison using the Sonic Jam opening. The video features:

  • Emulated CAVC footage in Genesis Plus GX, shown in the largest panel
  • Source footage taken from the TrueMotion AVI in the Sega Saturn version of Sonic Jam
  • The original Sega CD version for comparison
  • Real hardware footage captured from an actual Japanese Mega Drive 2 and Mega-CD 2

The Sonic Jam source video has a native resolution of 288×200.

Lunar: The Silver Star Opening — 320×224 Fullscreen at 24 FPS

CAVC can also take advantage of the Genesis VDP's hardware scrolling. This is particularly effective for scenes with sustained horizontal camera movement, such as the opening of Lunar: The Silver Star. Instead of redrawing the entire screen frame by frame, the codec can scroll the existing image using the VDP hardware, reducing the amount of new visual data that needs to be transferred. The final fade-out is also handled through palette fading rather than by re-encoding the image for each brightness step.

Tears of Steel — 320×168 Live Action at 24 FPS

Live-action footage is especially challenging, but I think the result is still reasonably watchable.

Downloadable ISO Images

I've also made downloadable Sega CD ISO images available for the Bad Apple!! and Tears of Steel demos, so you can try them yourself in an emulator or on compatible hardware.

Does anyone have a sega cd I can buy?

I really want a sega cd, but they're all $599.99 so yeah if anyone has one I can buy for less, I'd appreciate it. My price range is 100-200, I get a lot of you are thinking "You're a moron" but I've just really really wanted one of these for a long time.

So my Sega CD keeps having a ram format error and it keeps deleting my saves. From what I know there is a ram cartridge that acts as a memory card and I was wondering if there were any good quality 3rd party versions anyone would recommend?

Black little gear

Hi guys! So, I noticed an unpleasant noise coming from the CD drive and managed to find the problem.

At first, I thought it was the large white gear that moves the laser, so I replaced it with a new one. But it turns out the problem is actually the small black gear. When the laser assembly moves with a bit of force, the teeth slip.

I guess after all these years the mechanism has simply worn out.

So, my question is: does anyone know where I could get this small gear, or has anyone come across this problem before? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
