I absolutely loved the story mode in Shift at Midnight. The whole grotesque, creepy, yet strangely funny atmosphere worked so well, and I really appreciated how many small, thoughtful details the developer(s) included.
(For example, being able to talk to the sheriff about his father and his suicide is such a minor optional detail, but things like that add a lot of depth to the world for me.)
After finishing the story, though, I was left with a few questions. I’m especially curious about the red deer resurrection scene in the forest, and about where the tokens actually come from. There are two moments where the deer people give us heart-shaped tokens, which made me wonder if there’s a deeper meaning or connection behind them.
I also have a few questions about some of the characters and events.
Why doesn’t the Calendar Killer attack, but then the detective NPC attacks us the following day? Could the detective actually be the Calendar Killer?
And what about the Dentist? Why doesn’t he kill us when he clearly has several opportunities to do so? We run into him multiple times inside the building, yet he never seems interested in attacking us. Is there a specific reason for that, or is there something about his role that I’m missing?
So, does Shift at Midnight have an actual established lore or mythology behind everything that happens? And what are your theories about the deer people, the tokens, the resurrection, or any of the other strange events in the game?
