110 and 120 grain Barnes TAC-TX

Barnes TAC-TX is arguably the best self-defense supersonic ammo for a 300 Blackout rifle. But which kind to use?

Just got back from the range and chrono'd some 110 and 120 grain Barnes TAC-TX out of my 300BLK Sig MCX Rattler LT (6.75" barrel length) with a CAT RAT suppressor (Flow module attached). Thought I would share the results.

While a 6.75" 300BLK rifle is geared toward subsonic ammo use, supersonic ammo still kicks butt and it's interesting to see how it performs.

I tried out 110 and 120 grain Barnes TAC-TX ammo from Bone Frog and Phantom Defense, with the Phantom Defense ammo being NAS3, allowing slightly more gunpowder, and thus, increased muzzle velocity than standard cased ammo. I used a Garmin Xero C1 Pro measuring 10 shots of each ammo type.

Ammo Bone Frog 110gr Bone Frog 120gr Phantom Defense 110gr Phantom Defense 120gr
Avg. velocity 1851.5 fps 1791.6 fps 2114.3 fps 2059.6 fps
Spread 83.2 fps 51.0 fps 48.7 fps 30.0 fps
Standard dev 24.4 fps 13.4 fps 15.3 fps 8.4 fps
Muzzle energy 837.3 ft-lbs 855.2 ft-lbs 1091.8 ft-lbs 1130.1 ft-lbs

The Phantom Defense performs quite well, achieving the velocity of what I would expect from a ~9" 300BLK rifle.

Both performed flawlessly and grouped quite well. I'll do an accuracy test at some point in the future.

Using the above muzzle velocities, a 50 yard zero, and my hight over bore of 3.81" (I'm using a 2.26" Unity mount + rail over bore for a Rattler LT is 1.55"), here are the bullet drop calculations if folks are interested:

Bone Frog 110gr

Bone Frog 120gr

Phantom Defense 110gr

Phantom Defense 120gr

It's interesting to note that the bullet drop for the 110 and 120 Phantom Defense is almost identical:

Bullet drop Phantom Defense 110gr Phantom Defense 120gr
50 yards 0 0
100 yards 1.56 1.5
150 yards 0.58 0.45
200 yards -3.31 -3.43
250 yards -10.56 -10.50
300 yards -21.66 -21.13

As is typical with 110gr vs 120gr grain TAC-TX, inside ~100 yards the 110gr has a higher velocity, but outside ~100 yards the 120gr has a higher velocity.

My understanding is that while 120gr has slightly better barrier performance, the expansion and terminal performance of 110 and 120 is roughly similar:

  • Minimum expansion: ~1350 fps
  • Better terminal-effect floor: ~1500–1600 fps
  • High-confidence strong expansion: ~1700–1800+ fps
  • Excellent close-range 300 BLK supersonic performance: ~1900–2200+ fps

Beyond 150 yards, the Bone Frog's velocity out of 6.75" barrel is below 1500 fps, perhaps making it an option for pretty close work.

Phantom Defense 110gr doesn't drop to 1500 fps until 250 yards, and 120gr almost out to 300 yards.

Thus, if choosing a supersonic round for self-defense use in a ~7" 300BLK rifle, Phantom Defense (or Badlands also makes a NAS3 TAC-TX) seems like the better option than a standard casing ammo.

A lot of this is theoretical. Would be interesting to hear from folks with practical experience.

Front Vertical Grip Options ?

I have new MCX Spear LT 300BLK 9" build that I am completing.
Been going round-n-round on front grip/stops/etc......and have landed on wanting a front vertical grip.
I DO have one but too large for my liking.
I do not require 100% vertical but need/want be able grab/grip with left hand for "vertical" front HD/Barrel support.

Been searching online but wanted to throw this inquiry out......what does Forum folks have/use ?
Please post name + link ....and if you have a pic of your build with it would be great !
...does not have to be MCX but you get idea...

Thx !

Genuine question: what do we call this as a nickname?

It's not a Rattler LT, but it's no longer really a Spear LT per se. So genuinely.... does it get a snake nickname? I'm more of a "bird" guy myself.

Omega valve MKII, anyone get theirs yet?

Anxiously awaiting the MKII pre-order shipment, just curious if anyone has received shipment notification yet? It's been a month since we've had an update email.

I know Jake follows Reddit closely so I expect he might chime in here and I want to say I'm rooting for you! I'm hoping the coating is going as planned. You have many peeps who are getting excited for the product.

Anyone have good options for buffer tube adaptions?

I want to add a bit to the folding stock on my Spear LT, been shopping around. So far the MI, Jmac, Sig come up as decent options. Sig's is crazy overpriced, Jmac seems flimsy? and there's plenty of cheap airsoft replicas. MI has a ton of options. Thoughts?

JP Enhanced Gas Ring improved my MCX reliability

I recently picked up an Sig MCX Rattler LT (300BLK, 6.75" barrel) upper, and a CAT RAT suppressor, and have been experimenting with different ammo. On my first range trip, I had a number of failures to feed. I followed the advice of Jake ( u/Sharp-Independence52 ) from JBD Designs ( https://jbddesigns.com/product/jp-enterprises-223-enhanced-gas-ring-for-use-with-mod-2/ ) and tried out a JP Enhanced Gas Ring ( https://s3802.americommerce.com/JPEGR-223.aspx ). On my second range trip I experienced flawless functioning across all the ammo I tried—a dozen ammo types. Thus, the JP Enhanced Gas Ring did something good for my Sig MCX.

If you're having reliability issues, probably worth a try. At $10.95, seems like a great place to start.

MCX Spear Lower 🤔😬

Hello gents…

So first let me say I’m retarded and didn’t realize the fury and 308 calls don’t fit the LT lowers and ended up with the big boi lower with a Geissele trigger installed for $1150 total…

The question is, do I keep it and build an AR10 or sell it along with some other MCX parts I’ve accumulated and just buy a new SBR?

**I have an FFL and SOT so i can shave some expenses. And yes i know this is completely hilarious. Commence shaming with some advice please.

Crosse Sig Spear LT

MCX Estimated Production Numbers

The MCX has been in commercial use for roughly 11.5 years and I was curious roughly how many SIG has produced but, SIG doesn't publish production numbers for individual platforms/models so I compiled as much data as I could and fed it into Gemini.

I find many of these numbers believable because I've heard the same estimates from people who work for SIG--specifically regarding the Legacy and Gen 1.5.

This is what Gemini gave me:

https://preview.redd.it/rs053sa7wk1h1.jpg?width=721&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0e31a25732960965460e5aacbf8f00dc1710473b

This is really interesting data because on the high-end of the production estimate we're only talking about a quarter of a million units over 11.5 years. True, mass-market guns sell 10s of millions of units such as the Ruger 870, Marlin Model 60 and Ruger 10/22. Sure they've had way more time on the market but, for the 870 to have 12-15 million sales since 1950 that requires selling 155k-200k of them EVERY year.

The other thing I find interesting about this estimate are the totals on Legacy, Gen 1.5, Original Rattler and Regulator. The limited quantities make these collector guns--especially the 1.5 and Regulator. The Regulator may be one of the smallest batch commercial firearm runs SIG has ever done. Those lowers might not be worth much now but, give it a few years--people will want them.

11.5in 556, or 9in 300blk?

So I have a 16 inch 556 SIG spear LT, and I want to switch the barrel out and get something different, reason being is I have a 14.5 M4A1 build and a 16 inch AK from Zastava coming in so I want something different and more compact. I have a CZ scorpion as well so I was hesitant to get the 9 inch 300 blk and with the price of ammo.

But I feel like if I go 11.5 556 it overlaps too much with my DD. What would you guys be running? Not to mention the AK is also 556.

Finally rejoined the Sig club

I used to own a 16" Spear LT a few years back but ended up selling it because it wasn't getting much range time. Eventually started missing it so I got myself an 11.5" this time. SBR form finally got approved so I was able to get all the parts on and can't wait to get it out to the range.

Parts were chosen based on my lessons learned from the old Spear plus my general experience gained in the time between:

---

Sig Hexium 556 Suppressor with Angled Spade STRIX Clutch-Lok Adapter

  • Normally you can't run hub suppressors on the OEM muzzle device but this adapter finally allows it.
  • I was going for a (mostly) Sig build so I wanted to try their new can.
  • Kind of silly that they're still shipping these with those lame clutch-lok devices but the Angled Spade adapter is a nice workaround.

Emissary Development Handbrake

  • Not much to say here, just a nice handbrake that I have on a few of my other guns as well.
  • Still deciding on which placement is best. The handguard gets hot up front so I find myself changing where I grip it quite often.

Sig Romeo 8T AMR Red Dot + Juliet 3T Magnifier

  • Very cool system that lets you have one reticle for magnified and a different one for unmagnified. A little magnet in the magnifier causes the Red Dot to switch when it gets close enough and switch back when you flip it out of the way.
  • I have an Eotech but I find myself really liking this optic.

JMAC Customs ST Skeleton Tube 6" Bronze

  • This thing is awesome. You can remove the brace from your OEM Sig folding mechanism and attach this guy instead. It emulates a buffer tube to let you run any AR15 stock and has the notches to lock in your various telescoping positions.
  • Highly recommend this over Sig's frankly ridiculous $300 buffer tube adapter.
  • Best part is that the folding mechanism still works!

Geissele Super MCX Charging Handle

  • I'm swapping between this and Next Level Armament's MCX charging handle but this one has a higher lip that helps deflect gas a tiny bit more.
  • It's not like a night and day gas difference but it's noticeably better than other charging handles I've tried.

Driven Arms Co. SCG Sawtooth Grip

  • Love this grip. It's got an aggressive stippling that helps you fight the Spear's tendency to rotate forward and down due to its front-heavy nature, especially during reloads.
  • It's not as abrasive as it looks. I've had this grip on multiple guns and used it over 3-4 hour range sessions and my palms are just fine.

Geissele MCX Trigger

  • I got this mainly because I'm used to Geissele's flat trigger shoe, it just feels more comfortable for me. And because I have the disposable income to spend on it.

  • However, I would not recommend it due to the price. If you're on the fence thinking about it, the OEM trigger is plenty good enough.
