Honestly, I would just use the story from the animated, the only thing I would change about it is to adapt Fern and Ash into the movie, and see if I can give them important roles. But seriously I don’t think there is anything to learn from the first maleficent movie, but if there is let me know.
Now this is something I can learn from a Maleficent movie. Have you ever heard of a dragon kidnapping a princess? But what if that dragon kidnapped a young 9 or 11 year old Audrey (from descendants) because it was working for the dark fey? The dark fey would have probably found out about Maleficent’s death and have probably saw it as an act of war, and have kidnapped Audrey as a distraction for her parents and pets (I’m adding in the rest of Aurora’s Palace pets) while the dark fey army goes and attack the kingdom. Now that’s a sequel I can live with.
