Making the 2018 Smart Fortwo an “EV” was too soon. They should’ve waited another 5 or so years until they could give it more range.

I owned an electric 2018 Smart. What a horrible experience that was. Fully charged, I got about 60-70 miles of range. If you decided to turn on the heat/air conditioner, it drops to around 40-50 miles of range. During the winter when it’s around 20 degrees outside, it’s so much worse that I got buyer’s remorse. One time, I fully charged my Smart to 100% in the winter. It was super cold outside, and I had to put the heat on. The fully charged 100% battery dropped to around a 20-mile range immediately while still saying 100% on the charging dash. They released the electric Smart way too soon. I will say though it’s the best driving experience in all Smart Fortwo models. It drives way better than any Smart Fortwo gas model out there. The range is garbage though, so pick your poison. Since Smart Fortwo is coming back called the #2 (not releasing in America). It has better range, but not enough for my taste. Maybe if it had 300 miles of range per charge, I’d get it.

Edit: Yes the battery was 100% healthy when I got it. On top of that the miles on that EV was only around 6k. The other worst thing about this car was needing to charge it every.single.day. That was the last straw before I went back to the 453 gas model.

Thinking of buying a....

Hi, Guys. Thinking of swapping a 2009 451cdi for a 2015 1.0 Passion Euro 6 (s/s) with 48,955 on the clock, as the cdi is becoming a money pit; what do you think?

450 over the 451?

So I have a 2009 451 gas and I love it. I test drove a 2006 diesel and this one and went with this one because it was more zippy and seemed fun to drive but the diesel one had a really sus seller who didn’t even have the title in his name.

But I’m thinking of looking for a 05-07 diesel here in Canada after doing a long road trip of 12 hours, six hours each way. I went through close to two tanks of gas, and my back and butt where killing me. I’ve read the 450 is much more comfortable for long commutes, plus it’s twice as fuel efficient with the diesel engine. I also do a regular commute of 45-50 mins each way about 4-5 times a week right now. Seats are comfy for that but I wouldn’t mind halving my fuel costs.

Now that summers here I also really want a convertible. So thinking of maybe doing a trade in of my 09 gasser coupe for a 05-07 diesel, preferably soft top.

Or should I go the other direction and check out a 453 gasser? Right now I commute close to 4-5 times a week on average about 45-50 mins one way, so I’m trying to think of saving money on fuel.

Smart EQ fortwo…

I’m in the market for a new car and cannot find a decent 451 with PAS. I’ve seen a few EQs pop up on my search for similar price to 453s.

EV forums don’t seem to know much about them.

Any feedback ? Are they worth buying, or shall I go for something bigger?

Problem with my Smart

Good morning, good afternoon, good evening and goodnight to everyone on this sub! I hope life finds you well!

I've got a Smart Fortwo 451 Pure non-MHD 71hp from 2008, bought in December of last year second handed as my first car. I've been loving it! However, since mid January, my car as started to show some problems that I can't understand.

Sometimes my car rumbles a lot, like changing gears or gets stuck trying to change gears, like when it changes from 1st to 2nd, the car takes like 2 to 4 seconds to change gears, and when it changes, the car jerks a lot, it almost jumps. Sometimes it gets stuck in 2nd gear and when i stop, the car stalls, and then to start I have to wait like 5 minutes to reset the gearbox. And other times, I'm driving normally and randomly the N with the engine gears shows on my visor, again, making me wait 5 to 10 minutes to reset the gearbox.

It used to be like 2 or 4 times a month, not normal, but not terrible, but now, it's all the time. Driving my Smart is like playing Russian Roulette, I may get lucky and nothing happens, or I can get 1 or 2 problems, or all of them at once. I'm starting to get worried.

I've taken the car to a mechanic and they found nothing, likethey did a diagnostic test on the car and they found nothing that may explain this behavior.

However, I've noticed that sometimes my car struggles to start, or sometimes my lights dim for like a second before becoming normal again. So I'm thinking it may be a battery issue, i don't know.

I'm going to a battery shop this week to test the battery and see what it can be.

I'm open to advices, i genuinely don't know what it can be and driving the car like that is very scary and unsafe.

Thanks for reading!

Hoping to hear from you guys!

I am about to buy this thing (EQ)

I’ve always wanted to own a Smart Fortwo. I work as a driver and I already have an electric car, so I’m familiar with how EVs generally perform. I’ve come across the opportunity to buy this vehicle, but I’m worried that it might give me problems (gearbox or something). It has 35,000 kilometers on it and it’s from 2021.

The rubber trim on both doors, around foot level, looks worn down from people’s feet rubbing against it. Is this normal? How much does it cost to replace it?

Is there anyone here who owns one and can tell me how it performs? What kind of real-world range does it usually get?

I live in a tropical climate where temperatures are always between 17 and 25 degrees Celsius, so what kind of range should I realistically expect?

I have a Kia EV6 and I average around 15.5 kWh/100 km. Taking that into account, what average consumption should I expect from the Smart? Enough to do 130km ?

Crazy whatisthiscar built on a fortwo!!!

Mods I am sorry if this is a form of repost that is not permitted. I did take a quick look at the rules.

This post elsewhere for information on an usual car surprised me with the comment that it is kit on a fortwo. As a smart roadster owner I am not a fan of the suggestion this makes this a kind of roadster !!! but still it’s interesting.

Anyone seen one or heard of this before. Making me wonder what else I could plonk on top of a fortwo …

What part is this?

I’m in the UK. And I got my smart car last week, over the past couple of days, what I think is the splash shield has been flapping under the car and today with the force of the winds and so on, it’s completely come apart and now dragging against the floor. Which part would I need to order to replace this? I would appreciate any advice please

Edit: sorry forgot to mention it’s a forfour.
And thank you to everyone who’s responded so far.

Mechanical issues

Hi everybody recently i am facing a problem with my smart 2004 fortwo which is so frustrating, the car starts in the morning perfectly then when i go to my gym or i leave it for about and hour, it’s not working anymore the starter motor works but the engine no. Then if i leave it for few hours again it works. I need to mention that i changed the battery and it’s pretty new. Anybody has any solutions for it? Or facing the same problem like me before? Thanks

2013 Smart Fourtwo Brabus just bought used, but the horn doesnt work

My mechanic says that all of the horn parts are fine and that he thinks its the horn sensor. Only problem is that horn sensors aren't typically sold separately. He thinks I need to replace/find the full steering column. Anybody have this experience?

Hi all, I'm new to smart car owning and have some questions

I have a 2015 fortwo pure coupe, I believe it's the 451 style but I'm unsure. It was gifted to me. I recently got the radiator replaced (the old one had gotten bent) and the mechanic put the blue coolant in it. However he did not do any 'burping'. How important is that/is that a necessity? He also mentioned I might have to either get a new condenser (there was no visible damage to it) or refill it with Freon before trying to run the AC because he had to move it to replace the radiator.

I did take it for a drive around town for maybe 20 minutes after the replacement. My car does not have a temperature gauge in it, how will I know if it's overheating? And are there any aftermarket ones you'd recommend?

There is also the traction control light that pops up when you hit about 10-15mph, should I be really worried about this? It's the only light that pops up on the dash. The code for it is steering angle sensor and/or front speed sensor right circuit output.

Thanks for taking the time to read and answer my questions! I'm hoping to have this car for many years. I think it's just the cutest thing and it's perfect for me (I'm only 4ft 10, so it's hard to find a car I don't need to sit on a cushion to see over the dash)
