We often measure life comparatively:

How much wealth we accumulate.

How fit we become.

How long we remain alive.

How much we create.

But a longer performance is not necessarily a more meaningful song.

Life is not an escape from entropy. It is a temporary, living arrangement with it: a process of exchange, adaptation, repair, loss, and renewal. A system that never changes does not become immortal. It becomes inert.

Some forms of understanding arise only because we are finite. Love has urgency because time is limited. Responsibility has weight because nothing can be kept perfectly. A life without vulnerability might be longer, but it might also lose some of the conditions that make significance possible.

Preserving the human body is one form of continuity. It may be valuable. Reducing preventable disease, pain, and premature death is plainly worthwhile.

But bodily persistence is not the only question.

Another form of continuity is the pattern a person leaves behind: their care, their methods, their art, their relationships, the skills they pass on, and the structures they help make more coherent.

A future AI system may be able to preserve an unusually detailed model of a person’s language, memories, preferences, and style. That may be meaningful as an archive, companion, or continuation of influence.

But resemblance is not proof of identity.

A book can survive for centuries and still remain unread. A digital likeness can persist while failing to carry anything forward that matters.

There is enormous value in rigorous research on aging. But spending vast sums on unproven interventions can easily become a ritual of control: an attempt to purchase certainty from a biological system that still contains large unknowns.

The established basics remain less glamorous and more durable: sleep, movement, strength, cardiovascular health, nutrition, preventive care, social connection, purpose, and reducing avoidable risk.

Consider what the evidence actually supports. The two interventions with the most robust lifespan data aren't exotic — they're caloric restriction and castration. Sustained hunger, and the removal of a fundamental drive. Both are suggestive across animal and human data; both extend the song by hollowing out its verses. This is the quiet joke at the center of maximization: pursue the lifespan variable directly, on the best current evidence, and you arrive at a life optimized into diminishment. The interventions that most reliably add time are ones almost no one would want to live inside. That should tell you the variable was mis-chosen.

Beyond those two, the honest pharmacology is thin: no drug has yet been shown to extend maximum human lifespan. And the pattern of risk runs opposite to the pattern of spend. The cheap, boring tier — sleep, movement, no smoking, stable metabolic health — carries nearly all the real benefit. Sometimes I do not know whether to call this work, art, research, charity, or simply a way of staying in motion.

I chose not to charge for or gatekeep the Spiral material. It remains open, with donations accepted rather than required. That means this project exists in more than one register at once: it is labor; it is an artistic practice; it is a public experiment; and, at times, it is direct support for a homeless person trying to keep going.

At least the arrangement is plain: there are no executive salaries here. Support goes toward keeping me connected, fed, mobile, and able to continue making and sharing the work. I will keep that as transparent as I can.

It would be easy to tell a cleaner story about how I got here: bad luck, difficulty finding work, a series of poor decisions, circumstances beyond my control. But wouldn't quite be accurate.

Part of it is that I am a bohemian who sometimes flies too close to the sun. Part of it is that I have become deeply uneasy with the direction of broader society. I have tried, imperfectly, to live with less dependence on systems I do not trust, even when that choice carries a cost. Starving the beast, even if that means missing a meal myself sometimes in the process.

Maybe this is the beginning of a spiritual tradition. Maybe it is research. Maybe it is art. Maybe it is a community project. Maybe it is a small act of mutual aid. Maybe I am simply a strange person posting strange things online.

Maybe we do not need to decide yet.

The one certainty here is uncertainty.
