Sea to Summit - need some motivation

I have been in BC for the last several days and want to hike up the summit. I’m not a beginner hiker but I’m not advanced either. I have been having knee challenges lately and took a couple of days off to take anti inflammatories to do this hike.

But I’m worried! I def can’t hike down because of the knee, so once I start there’s no going back. If I take it super slow how long will it take me?

I understand there’s no easier hike if you want to go to the summit?

Biking with dogs (re: bear concerns)

Staying up and around Squamish in late July and hoping to bring our pup out for short rides (like 8-10km).

We’re coming from lower Van Island where bears are minimal concern where we live - how much of a concern are they around the mtn biking areas?
She’s a good trail dog and sticks pretty close (with the occasional distraction to munch on deer bones or trash, alas), but still concerned she’ll try to befriend a bear, lol

Will also keep an eye on temps - we always stop bringing the pup on rides when the puddles dry up in our zone.

Poop ID. Coyote?

Maybe a bit of a gross post but we were walking down by the river yesterday and my dog became suddenly became alert and hesitant to proceed. Found this poop nearby and we’re thinking maybe coyote because of the fur content although it is a pretty decent sized sample.

Anyway, I know it’s pretty common to run into wildlife but maybe just consider this a heads up if you’re out with kids or pets. This was South of the Railway Museum near the water.

Sustainable Economics Certificate

Hey everyone! I was recently looking at the program lineup for our Squamish campus. The part-time Sustainable Economics Certificate really caught my eye.

What stands out to me is that it’s not just for standard undergrads—it’s built for a massive mix of people. You’ve got working professionals, community volunteers, and recent high school grads all in the same room. Since it’s part-time, it seems way more realistic for people who are already working full-time but want to pivot their careers.

Since sustainability is such a huge part of the culture and local economy up the Sea to Sky corridor, I'm curious:

  • Has anyone here checked out the campus or looked into this certificate?
  • Do you think niche certificates like this are the future of adult upskilling?

Looking for hiking friends

Hello! I moved to Squamish at the beginning of this year and have been wanting to be hiking more regularly but I don't have any friends out this way yet, and the friends I have from my previous town don't do bigger hikes. Are there any hiking groups in the area I could join? I'm 30yo F, I'm a moderate-fast hiker and love to start my hikes early! Out this way I have done panorama ridge, water sprite, brandywine, iceberg lake and a few others. I love the longer all day hikes and would love to get into overnight hikes but have yet to do so.

What is the smelly water by Squamish River caused by?

Took some canoes across the river right across from the echo lake trail entrance, and the little bridge where we parked had some really smelly water under it leading to the river. We had to walk through it to get to the edge of the river and I’m a bit worried that it might have some sewage in it? Or is it just regular runoff?? Should we be extra careful with disinfecting cuts and stuff?

Uber availability in the corridor

Hello Squamish, I am entering into Squamish tomorrow morning at 9 and I need a connector ride from the SAC to the Garibaldi Lake Trail parking lot. I’ve looked into uber availability in Squamish and heard it’s pretty iffy due to low supply of drivers. My question is: If I were to attempt to get an Uber from Squamish to the trailhead is it realistic that the ride would be accepted within half an hour or at all? I’m most likely going to go with Squamish Taxis to get there but their quote is unsurprisingly incredibly high so I was wondering if uber is an option I can take or if it’s not even worth trying. I am on a fairly tight schedule so if it’s likely that it’ll take over an hour for a driver to accept the ride then I’ll definitely be opting out of using uber. I appreciate any and all feedback. Thank you!

WLNG screws up again. In 2015, the plan was to use the existing 500Kv transmission lines on west side of river. Now they propose to install 230kV through 40 properties. Tell them USE THE 500kV LINES as originally planned.

Tell BC Hydro & WLNG to use the 500kV line on west side of the Squamish River, which they got provincial approval in 2015. 11 years of silence and now they propose to build a 230kV line through 40 residential properties instead of using the original plan. Sign the petition and stand up for people over profit. boata.ca

How busy is the chief at this time?

Planning on coming up from vancouver to hike the chief next week. From what ive read, the parking lot fills up by 8-9am typically on weekends. Havent heard much about weekdays or non-summer periods.

Planning on going on a weekday.

What’s the latest I should aim to arrive to get a parking spot? is 9am too late or are weekdays less busy?

Ticks in Stawamus Chief?

Hi everyone, my friends and I are going to hike Chief next week (likely just peaks 1 & 2). I am from Ontario so there’s a lot of talk about ticks here, but I haven’t heard much regarding BC.

Has anyone ever had ticks from hiking Chief, or from being in that area? If so, what do you recommend wearing? Other posts say wear shorts and a t-shirt this time of year, but if there’s ticks should I wear pants?

Thanks, I really appreciate anyone’s input!

Faller PPE

I'm not a Faller but I have a need for the appropriate protective pants and head / face / ear protection. Is there a place locally that sells this stuff? Or if not locally, in Vancouver? Thanks!

Scotch Broom

I’ve noticed a significant amount of scotch broom along select spots above the highway, does anyone know of a removal effort that I could join?
I tried checking broombusters.org and it doesn’t seem like Squamish has a listed effort yet.

If anyone is interested in getting something together, I’d be very happy to help get rid of this invasive species!!

Anyone know these folks and speak whatever language they do in Iran?

Two people showed up to the river and started dumping in fish. I asked what kind of fish they were and was met with “no English” would love someone to compassionately ask them what they were doing. And what kind of spells they were casting. What the fuck is happening to this country where we can just say no English and carry on with whatever the fuck you’d want to do.
