Help Save Undead Labs—State of Decay's Studio is at Risk

Undead Labs, the studio behind State of Decay, is facing potential closure. This matters because these games have meant so much to so many of us—not just as entertainment, but as a genuine escape during tough times.

I started a petition asking Microsoft and industry stakeholders to step in and keep the studio alive. State of Decay 3 is on the horizon, and the community is genuinely excited about it. Losing Undead Labs would mean losing not just the games we love, but the creative voices behind them.

If you've gotten something out of State of Decay or just think studios like this deserve a fighting chance, consider signing and sharing. Has this series meant something to you? What would it mean to lose it?

Summary of info from Brian’s latest Q&A video

Here’s some new info I noticed was mentioned in Brian’s Menard’s latest vid.

Link here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dDDFP4hSOOk

There’s heaps of other stuff he talks about that I didn’t include below, so make sure you watch it for yourself if you want to hear everything. I’ve included rough time stamps aswell.

Also, don’t forget to Wishlist SoD3 to show support for the game.

  • No boarding up windows {1:02:40}
  • Can only add one survivor as a follower (at this stage) {1:04:03}
  • AI followers are still in development but already are “very competent, for the most part”. Shoot reliably, as opposed to going for melee. Follow your lead, crouch when you couch etc... Followers aren’t a liability anymore. Bringing a follower with you in SoD3 is meta {3:51:35}
  • Followers have infinite ammo {3:45:15}
  • Devs are aware players want to see deeper, inter-connected survivor relationships. Romance etc.. Currently ideas are being thrown around {1:44:00}
  • Your survivors turn into zombies if they die {1:48:25}
  • No sleep / skip time system {2:17:40} & {2:50:40}
  • No gun durability (guns apparently never break), melee weapons still have durability {2:25:20}
  • No more melee one-button instakills. Can still one-hit kill a zombie with a levelled up survivor, but need to time attack like a normal melee attack {2:38:30}
  • No more gunslinging aimbot / snap aim {2:43:10}
  • Confirming that backpacks have zero impact on gameplay and purely cosmetic, like a wardrobe item. Unsure if weight is even a thing at this stage {32min} & {49min}
  • Rucksacks being visible on your back is still a heated debate among devs/testers {35min}
  • Running over zeds with the back of your car is no longer OP, car might get stuck if you try to back into a group of zeds and they’ll rip your car apart {37min}
  • “Don’t quote me on this, but a van with upgraded storage can hold like 40-something slots” - Brian Menard 2026 {52min}
  • Every search hazard crash will spawn zombies, but less likely if you‘ve cleared an area {56min} & {2:27:10}
  • No leader system. Sheriff, Warlord etc… (with this point, I’m not sure if he meant ever, or just that it hasn’t been implemented yet) {1:57:15}
  • New facilities confirmed = granary, sawmill, water filter, ethanol reactor {1:38:10}
  • If you want to move a certain survivor to a different base, they will just teleport there. No need to move them manually {57min}
  • The plague spreads out and takes over sites. You see it spread over houses, walls etc… like we saw with plague walls in SoD2 {2:33:40}
  • Zeds can’t see your flashlight, doesn’t effect stealth, same as SoD2 {1:05:00}
  • There will be a tutorial {1:07:55}
  • No swimming {1:09:10}
  • Crossbows confirmed {1:22:10}
  • On harder difficulties, with a 9mm, it could take 3-4 headshots to down a runner zombie. Will depend on what shooting skill your survivor has {2:45:30}
  • Juggernaughts can be found in buildings {2:01:30}
  • Might be plans to allow players to use allied enclave’s base facilities / supply locker etc… {18:10}
  • Less guns, but their differences matter more now with more gun modding options {38:25}
  • There are lots of unmarked looting locations {48:25}
  • When you start the game, sometimes plague hearts/nests will start awake (depending on difficulty) {58:50}
  • There are 10+ bases on the map, will take multiple playthroughs to explore the entire map. Current goal of devs is to make the other side of map (which we haven’t seen) look very different {1hr}
  • Towns are bigger than in SoD2. About 12 towns on the map {1:40:10}
  • Outpost system is different to SoD2. There are ‘outposts’ which are bigger, significant sites. Almost like mini-bases. And ‘harvest sites’, which are smaller and just provide resources. You can’t just turn any location into an outpost {1:02:40}
  • Zombie’s glowing eyes still exist, but is less pronounced, only see them if you get close enough {2:46:15}
  • There has been some discussion about adding functional clothing (like Kevlar), but no system like that exists in the game yet {1:05:25}
  • Infestations can produce ‘blockade sites’ around your base that cut off your resource income, turns area around your base into a hellscape {1:06:30}
  • Wardrobe is slightly more in-depth, can select different shirts, pants, hats, backpack (not just outfit + hat) {1:13:55}
  • Getting influence is easier. Traders/enclaves have more influence to sell. Killing normal zeds (not just freaks) also provides influence now {1:16:40} & {1:37:40}
  • Takes over 8mins to drive from top of map to bottom at max speed {1:23:50}
  • No pets in game at launch, but devs said they would love to include them at some point {1:36:10}
  • No more climbing a high structure for scouting, now have to walk to site on the ground in order to properly see what a site has in it {1:39:20}
  • Foggy weather and storms confirmed {2:30:40}
  • Zombies can climb most things, even juggernaughts can climb shipping containers {3:25:25}
  • All variants of freaks are found across all difficulties {3:02:20}
  • Zombies can drop loot, necklaces, rings. Armored zeds can drop ammo. Bloaters drop ‘bloater bile’, jugs drop ‘juggernaught glands’ used for crafting {4:17:10}
  • Scent block confirmed

Also, this wasn’t talked about in the latest video, but I noticed it in his previous video and not sure if it‘s been mentioned yet. But certain walls in your base now have a health meter. Similar to destructible walls in Daybreak.

State of Decay 1 has the best melee attack variety in the series, I wish they would add the same moves to the third game when it releases.

"News" Quarantine/Megathread

Certain media outlets are citing anonymous sources saying that Undead Labs, in addition to three other studios, are in danger of being closed down by Microsoft/Xbox.

Example: https://www.polygon.com/state-of-decay-3-studio-undead-labs-xbox-layoffs/

It is, at this point, nothing more than a rumor.

Relax, take a breath, nothing has actually happened.

Follow the rules of the sub, be excellent to each other.

Keep further discussion/panic/etc in this thread please. The purpose of this thread is to keep further talk of this contained, so it doesn't infect (see what I did there?) the rest of the sub. I don't want to be accused of silencing anyone, but I don't think it's fair to allow the sub to be dominated by fear either.

What can we do to stop the the shut down of the studio? I bought the game on steam even tho i play it all the time on xbox just as a small support for the devoplers

I've been gaming for over 10 years, and I've never pre-ordered a game in my life. State of Decay 3 was going to be my first!! not just because I'm incredibly excited for it, but because I wanted to support the developers in a small way. I absolutely love the State of Decay games, and I don't want to see this franchise or the studio fade away after all these years. They deserve so much better. I really hope these rumors aren't true.

u/ari_leon — 1 day ago

Alright, I'm going to tell the truth.

Go ahead, get mad if you want, but now that we’ve had a glimpse of the alpha, I’m just going to say it:

The game looks pretty sad.

There are no major gameplay changes; it feels like I’m looking at *State of Decay 2.5*.

And seeing people excited for the release? Lol—is there really so little else for you to sink your teeth into?

This post isn't meant to troll or bait rage, but I can't wrap my head around how little work this studio has done in the nearly nine years between the release of *SoD2* and the (supposed) 2027 launch.
Honestly, it cracks me up to see so much of the community happy with such a bland game—one that feels exactly like playing a title from 2015.

Concrete improvements to base, survivor, or community management? Nope.

Satisfying combat? Nope (ooh, look, you can dodge backward away from a zombie—wwoooooowwwww).

A polished, immersive interface—like the beautiful notebook in *SoD1*? Nope; we’re stuck with a totally bland, generic UI.

Storage chests with smaller inventories than your own backpack? YES.

An empty map with no random events to breathe life into your sessions? YES —hasn't happened since the first game!

I could go on; there are so many areas needing work based on the info we've seen.
Releasing what amounts to a "2.5" version of the sequel eight years later?
I find that pretty bold of them. I say this because I loved the concept of this game; it managed to stand out through innovation, unlike other zombie survival titles.
But I think we’ve reached the point of no return now—you’ll think back to this post when it finally comes out (assuming it *does* come out, of course, which doesn't look likely).

I know a lot of people here are going to come after me because they aren't ready to hear that their beloved game or franchise really has nothing left to offer—but the truth is, it doesn't.

Still, knock yourself out if you're willing to shell out cash for a studio that’s done absolutely nothing and will likely release an unfinished game, pushing out one monthly update just to fix a single bug.

I can see the disaster coming a mile away. Anyway, I’m waiting for the release just so this post can resurface and people will finally get what I was driving at.

And given the rumors circulating, it's not even certain that it will be released.

Early Access Release

Based on recent rumours about Undead Labs future im sure everyone would agree that they should just release it to Early Access immediately (i for one would pay) and hopefully that tides the company over.

Also, I wouldnt even mind collaborations with zombie franchises for specific characters generating them additional income if it keeps them alive!

For example, a Walking Dead collaboration, you can use Rick once per new save for example.

I know this might not be the right time since everything is up in the air but has Undead Labs ever thought about partnering with the Walking Dead to help bring in more fans?

I hate to see one of my favorite games having the potential to be cancelled.

So this might be a good to help bring in a new buyer for the game.

Bacc in 2019. State of Decay was 10th on the list for sales for Xbox Exclusives so it shows that State of Decay has proven history of being a great seller.

What has hurt State of Decay is the constant changes of Microsoft, rumored mismanagement of Undead Labs and the 9 year gap of putting a new game out.

Bringing this game bacc is like an older established musician who hasn’t put any music out for so long is trying to put new music out.

The reason of me saying this is that majority of this fanbase is older and that this franchise needs younger fans to help with the projected profitability numbers.

Undead labs would probably have to reach out to companies like Snapchat and TikTok to promote its game because honestly, besides YouTube I haven’t seen much promotion of this game and I apologize if I’m wrong.

Give the entire community access to the Alpha gameplay access. I understand streamers are a key way to promote the games but if your core fanbase isn’t getting a “feel” for the game and can only go off the showcasing of streamers than that potentially can ruin interest of SOD3 because we all know the downfalls of just listening to streamers.

Giving the entire community access to the Alpha keeps fans excited for the release of SOD3 and helps fans spread this game by word of mouth to the younger generation

When it comes to being able to pre order. Only allow digital codes if the company needs to save money.

Last but not least. Get more people interested by partnering with Walking Dead. Exclusive skins, cosmetics, anything Walking Dead related that can help draw more interest to this game. The Walking Dead has millions of fans worldwide. I understand Walking Dead is no longer in its glory days but that can help with attracting more people to this game.

Sorry for any typos and for this being long. Just trying to get my thoughts out

I am not shocked

I began playing State of Decay 2 when the game released in 2018. My intention was looking at the trailer to play this with my brother multiplayer. The advertisement for the game looked brilliant, however, reality soon hit. The multiplayer was nothing short of a disaster, the tethering just totally ruined the experience. Despite my disappointment in that as it seemed to one of the main themes of the trailer I continued solo. I probably logged around 500-600 hours between Xbox 1 and PC. I had a pretty enjoyable time, the game after the early buggy stages was remarkably fun. However as time passed with all games I got bored.

Fast forward to the announcement trailer for SoD3... Zombie animals, new features etc... it seemed pretty exciting. We had no idea when it would release but a conservative estimate for any new game recently announced would be around 2-4 years. Afterall SoD2 released 2 years after its initial announcement. After years of dragging their heels, online controversies, requirements for other developers to have to help Undead Labs where are we?

Well in my view all we have is a remastered copy of SoD2, yes it looks good on the surface. But beneath that it looks like the same game. Alpha or not I expected much more, I would have expected 6 years post announcement that Undead Labs might have actually conjured something worth looking at. Now on this reddit post I am reading people blaming Microsoft, claiming that they are the problem here.

I will caveat my next point by saying I am no supporter of Microsoft, I find large companies like them to be extremely lecherous. However, it makes no financial sense to continue backing Undead Labs when they have produced nothing in 6 years that looks remotely like a finished and new unique game. I personally was not expecting a reskinned SoD2. If that is what they intended on producing at the start they should have just made a remaster. Nice lighting and fancy graphics are not enough to impress me. I want content, new content that actually provides a new experience.

NOT GOOD ENOUGH!

I hope Microsoft is seriously considering early access to fund SOD 3

Unless we’ve been really misled in the alpha footage, it seems very odd to shutter UL with a working alpha that people are excited about.

SoD 2 had strong sales over its lifetime and 3 has high steam wishlist with a passionate fan base. If you add a year for delay, it doesn’t seem unreasonable EA could fund the remainder of development till release.

Players can finally manage different bases in State of Decay 3

For the first time in the series, players can grow beyond a single base in State of Decay 3.

Do you think multiple bases are an important addition?

My Angry Undead Studio Rant - It's hard to see you go, but you should have seen it coming.

I enjoy State of Decay. I played both games and genuinely love the series. But honestly, I do not blame Xbox leadership for questioning the future of Undead Labs or threatening to shut things down.

We have been waiting eight years for State of Decay 3. This is not GTA VI, where a studio can disappear for a decade and still expect the entire industry to stop when they finally return. Most franchises do not have that luxury. Fans move on. The genre moves on. Expectations move on.

And from the footage we have seen so far, State of Decay 3 does not look like a major evolution of the gameplay experience. It looks more like a next-gen upgrade of State of Decay 2. The setting still appears to be rural America. The core gameplay loop still looks familiar. It feels like they spent eight years recreating State of Decay 2 in Unreal Engine 5.

That is hard to ignore when other zombie survival games have spent that same time evolving.

State of Decay, DayZ, and 7 Days to Die all came out or entered early access around 2013. Since then, DayZ and 7 Days to Die have built strong, active communities. They are constantly on Steam charts, they have active viewers, and they have grown through updates, mods, custom servers, and community-driven playstyles. Those games kept changing. They gave players tools. They listened to their communities. They allowed people to help shape the experience.

Meanwhile, State of Decay 2 had the full weight of Microsoft behind it, and yet the series somehow allowed smaller, rougher early-access games to build bigger long-term ecosystems around them.

And that is not even counting the zombie mods in games like GTA V, which have attracted dedicated fanbases of their own. Even mods in other games have managed to create fresh zombie survival experiences while State of Decay has been trying to figure out what its next step should be.

When I look at State of Decay 3, I do not see a bold reinvention. I see something that still feels trapped in the design language of the Xbox One era. It looks familiar, safe, and strangely stale for a game that has taken nearly a decade to arrive.

I understand Undead Labs is not Rockstar. I understand they are a smaller studio. But so were the teams behind DayZ and 7 Days to Die. Those games did not have the security of Microsoft backing them from the start, and yet they managed to build communities, iterate, and stay relevant.

That is what makes this so frustrating. State of Decay had the concept. It had the fanbase. It had the backing. It had the opportunity to become the definitive zombie survival franchise on Xbox. Surprisingly, there is hunger for story driven zombie games.

Look at the success of Sony's The Last of Us, another game that came out in 2013. Though *technically" not zombies. They released two games, remastered them for the next-gen, ported to PC, and even an entire TV series.

What did undead lab do with Microsoft...? Exactly.

Instead, it feels like the studio spent years trying to make a polished version of the same idea rather than taking real risks. They could have embraced early access, leaned into community feedback, supported modding, expanded multiplayer, and let the fans help shape the future of the series.

But from what we have seen, State of Decay 3 feels less like the next chapter and more like a remake of the last one with better graphics.

And after eight years, that is not enough.

I'm angry. I bleed Xbox green. I really want to play this game State of Decay 3. I still jump on State of Decay 2, especially during the summer because I have a lot more time. I hate that State of Decay 3 could never be released, but the industry has moved. It's time for me to move on too. I wouldn't suggest someone purchasing this studio. They've had their 15 minutes of fame, but it's time to retire this series and studio to the bargain bin.
