Ramoona treated as inferior

First of all I don’t mean to come off as ungrateful or anything!! Sterling point has provided us with the best sapphic representation I’ve seen In a long time and im so appreciative of the writers for that it’s so nice to feel seen!

BUT

I noticed ramoona seem to get the short end of the stick when it comes to the length of their scenes in comparison to Annie and her love interests. For example Rory and Annie got an entire montage to off to the races and Annie and Ellis have plenty of long intimate scenes too . Whereas with Ramoonas intimacy scene, we see Ramona take her shirt off and then the rest is left to our imagination.
Also with music selection, Annie + her love interests had some absolute BANGERS like off to the races, apocalypse etc whereas for all of ramoonas scenes it was like the generic instrumental music that was curated for sterling point .
I know it’s nit picky of me but it’s just something I noticed!! In my opinion, I see Annie and Ramona as equally the main characters so i feel like it’s unfair Annie gets more superiority

It's odd to me that the kids never blame their mother

Annie and Ramona constantly get mad at Joe and Steven, and rightfully so, but they always seem to glorify Goldie, especially Annie. They find out that Goldie took their small children away from their father and the life they agreed to live in New York, had an affair with Joe, who was a married father, allegedly got pregnant by him, and was planning on staying on the island with Joe and raise all of their kids there, essentially ripping both families apart.

Yet the more Annie finds out about her mother, the closer she wants to be to her, constantly talking about what Goldie would have wanted, regretting not having a life with her, while blaming everyone except Goldie for how things turned out. Maybe it's because Goldie died and it's easier to be angry at the living, but this felt so odd to me.

Oona and Maple Accents

Just a little something that bothers me while watching this series is that with the timeline we have been given it doesn’t make much sense for, particularly Maple, to still have an English accent. The girls have supposedly been in Canada long enough for Oona and Ramona to have history and be best friends even though Ramona has been gone for two years caring for Gordon. Kids who immigrate usually pick up the accent where they live. Perhaps they’re homeschooled but mostly I just think the show runners wanted to have random British kids when it doesn’t really make sense with the story. Overall don’t care, tv is fantasy, but did anyone else find themselves thinking too hard about this? 😂

This show has been amazing!

Im halfway through and I just wanna say how amazing I think this show is.

I’ve seen tsitp, and off campus and other shows similar to this one, the same like 10 episode prime drama.
Firstly, the writing is great, the actors are all likeable, the characters are very very realistic and down to earth.
I felt like I was looking at past memories at parties or with friends or even other convos that I’ve had in my life. It felt like people actually talking to one another.

Rory and Annie’s flirting was so spot on, (the amount or times I’ve done and I’ve seen people act this way with ppl they haven’t seen in a while/ people they like) that teasing fun vibe and the sarcasm.

The family dynamic, connor as a whole person (we’ve all met a Connor before)

Just no initial drama, and just reacting to things any normal fing person would! I cannot stand the over dramatization of personalities in other forms of media. Healthy conversations, real moral decisions and just character dynamics that are based in real relationships.

And the fact that there is no drama and the only plot and conflict is the only plot and conflict there should be, no million plot holes, a bunch of other characters problems!! It follows one family their issue and everyone kinda just revolves around it, makes it less complicated.

OH and lastly! PHONES not a cellphone in sight 😭😭👏

Great People interview with Jacob Whiteduck-Lavoie (Ellis)

There's been a slow stream of show content and cast interviews, and this People interview is a great one. I love this quote, especially since there's been so much debate on this sub! 🙂 “The show’s so well written. There’s no villains in this story. And it’s very valid to be team Rory or team Ellis,” Jacob continues. “Neither of them are hateable. They’re both green flags.”

Lets have a long conversation about these adults (LONG)

Can we talk about how most of the adults are insufferable. Im gonna go least to worst in my opinion. Buckle up, this is gonna be long. This is vent/rant, however im open to hearing different perspectives if anyone want to put there opinions. While i find things likable about these characters, i will not be mentioning any of that. So if this sound like pure hate, it is. If you don't want to hear hate about these characters, this thread is likely not for you. Probably spelling errors.

!!! NO HATE TO THE ACTORS!!!

!!! MAJOR SPOILERS!!!

First steven:

Literally from the first episode he was so unlikable. He keeps so much from them, despite them almost being adults. He is very controlling about Annie and Connor going to Muskoka. He doesn't want them going and is clearly trying to keep them away from the situation surrounding their grandfather and Romana. Mentioning Romana, he literally kept the fact they had a WHOLE sibling from them. While he didn't know much about her, he knew his ex wife was pregnant. Moving on to the fact on how he treated his ex wife and children. Now i don't like goldie (ill get to her in a moment), but steven treated her like she didn't know what she wanted. Basically assuming that her wanting to stay in Muskoka is just her being crazy. He basically thinks she can't think for herself. I know her having the affair is 100% wrong (will get to her in a minute) i think steven taking the kids without letting her see them is selfish. Like yes she is bad, but those are her babies. Then when annie goes to Muskoka he again just assumes she is crazy. He thinks everyone wants to live in new york. And when he follows her there, instead of talking it out, he tries to get her to leave. Mind you at this point she is 18 and can do whatever she wants. The fact that his first instinct is essentially to pull her away from Muskoka rather than let her make her own decision is so controlling. Also not to mention how as a single father, instead of letting Annie simply be a kid, he allowed her to become the responsible, emotionally mature one. Annie even describes having to take care of Steven emotionally and feeling like she had to grow up. She is only able to realize this when she finally gets away from him. Now steven does have redemption in the end. He handles figuring out Romana is his very well. Also not telling the kids about the mother's affair so they didn't think bad about her. These the only reasons i find him the least insufferable.

Next denise: Literally so childish. Lets start with the fact that she parties with literal minors and people her sons age. It so gross. I have not seen her get hate for this yet. We all know she would have been so much more hated if she was a man and did stuff like this. Its gross. Like she was getting to close with conner it that hot tub. It weird. Next, her son is basically rasing her. Notice how so many times rory has to step in to help her in a basic way. Like stopping her from getting wasted. Plus she loves to get in drama that doesn't invole her. Like dropping that bomb on Romana. While romana deserved to know, she was the last person who should've done it. Also pay attention to your son. He need therapy. He harmed his self intentionally. The only good this about Denise is that she can spew some good advice at the most randomist times. She need to use some of her own advice and go to therapy.

Next goldie: this girl barely touched the screen, but i have so much shade to throw at her. Goldie was a bad mother because she consistently put her own wants, relationships, and happiness ahead of her responsibilities as a parent. Her entire affair with Joe shows how selfish and reckless she was. She was married to Steven and had already built a family with him, yet she chose to reconnect with Joe and carry on a relationship behind Steven’s back. Instead of ending her marriage honestly, she betrayed Steven and allowed the affair to become serious enough to completely change the direction of her childrens life. She became pregnant while caught up in the relationship and began planning a future around Joe and the life she wanted at Muskoka. Rather than thinking about the stability her children needed, she prioritized her affair and her own desires, making one selfish decision after another without fully considering anybody else. She also left behind years of lies, confusion, and unanswered questions. Her choices created a situation where the people around her had to hide the truth and deal with the consequences of decisions she had made. She betrayed steven. Instead of taking responsibility for her actions and protecting her family from unnecessary pain, she chased the life she wanted and left everyone else to deal with the fallout. There are no redeeming qualities for her.

Last joe:

I know someone talked about him yesterday on here, i need to go more into depth with him. He started with just being a character precived as a caring father figure, but he has to be the worst. I will be breaking this into parts.

His family and the affair:

First the way he treats his family. First he is so delusional he doesnt realize his business is going under, that his wife and son have to take care of it. His wife is busy picking up to many shifts to have any real screen time. His son is so concerned that he starts hiding money as a emergency fund for his dad. To help his dad. And what does joe do when his finds it, lectures the sh!t out of him. Instead of blaming himself he basically reprimands the poor kid. he refuse to see that everybody else has to clean up his mess. Next, how he treats them durning the afair. Joe treats Kate terribly because he betrays her trust while she is away caring for her sick mother and taking care of their baby, Ellis. He has an affair with Goldie and develops strong feelings for her, but instead of being honest with Kate, he returns to his family and keeps the entire relationship secret for years. What makes it even worse is that Kate doesn't even hear the truth from Joe himself, she finds out by listening to Goldie's tape. She is forced to discover on her own that her husband had been involved with Goldie and that he had hidden it. Plus when she confronts him, he blows her off. When she asks questions he refuses to answers. Plus he never once says SORRY. For the affar or keeping it hidden for over a decade.

Him and Romana:

Joe is such a bad person.he wasn’t really there for her when she was growing up. After goldie died, he went back to his wife and son , and completely left Ramona behind. All because he was to scared of the truth coming out. He also kept a lot of things about her family a secret, so ramona didn’t know the whole truth about her own life. Like annie and conner. Romana basically grew up alone, and he let it happen. Then, when Gordon dies, Joe suddenly becomes her guardian and starts trying to act like her dad, even though he wasn’t there for most of her childhood. He doesn't want to be her father to protect himslef from the consequences of his affair. But after it comes out anys, now he wants to play dad to her. Ramona is obviously upset by this because she doesn’t really trust him. She even wants to get emancipated because she doesn’t want Joe making decisions for her. Yet he refuse to sign. Like how are you gonna refuse to be in her life, then refuse to actually let her take you out of her life. Basically he think he should be able to decide when he is and isn't her father. He doesn't actually care for her, he is just trying to cover his own a$$. The way he treats annie, someone talked about this already. But the way he blame annie for romana getting drunk. Like you aren't there her whole life, resulting in nobody stopping romana for smoking. But she gets drunk one time and u wanna step up, which stepping up is just blaming annie, which had nothing to do with it. Annie is the only reason romana got home safe. Like bro shut up. Overall he is a horrible character and doesn't deserve his wife and son. Idk how anybody could like him.

Anyways that's all. Sorry its long. I again am open to hearing other opinions. If anybody wants change my mind about any of the characters i would love to hear it. Again no shade to these actors, a lot of them are great people in real life.

i’m going to be irrationally upset if annie and ellis are endgame

i’m sick of the propaganda telling young girls they should pick the nonchalant guy over the assertive one.

rory is emotionally open, clearly expresses his feelings and intentions, truly seems to care about annie’s thoughts and feeling, and treats her with respect. rory and annie are able to have real conversations because he meets her at her level.

ellis is deeply insecure and emotionally opaque. he doesn’t openly pursue annie because he thinks he doesn’t deserve her, then interprets every setback in their fling as proof of that negative self-belief. when annie opens up about her deeper thoughts and feelings he doesn’t really engage, so all their conversations are surface level. i even started to wonder if he really liked annie as a person or if he just wanted to get a girl as beautiful and well-liked as her to validate himself.

obviously ellis is a teenager and he could definitely mature from this insecure phase. but in real life that kind of guy sucks to be in a relationship with. if annie wants to pursue her big dreams, a guy like ellis will feel threatened and his insecurity will hold her back. i’ll be really pissed if ellis and annie get a happily ever after because their relationship is the way weaker one.

Joe is the villain

If there is a “villain”’of this show it has to be Joe… first of all, the way he talked to Steven like he did anything wrong?? Literally his wife CHEATED on him and was pregnant with another man’s child (what they thought at the time) and then wanted to completely uproot their lives and move to the place where the married man she cheated with was?? In what world did Steven do anything wrong?? Secondly, yelling at Annie for Ramona being drunk: how is this at all Annie’s fault and what about the 15 joints she’s smoking every day? Third thing and most obvious but letting your “daughter” believe she basically was an orphan and had NOBODY left after Gordon died even though for 16 years you thought you were her father? STRAIGHT TO JAIL

Why I'm team Ellis ?

Firstly reasons why I'm not team Rory

  1. He doesn't want Annie, he just wants to beat Ellis and wants to assert dominance. ( atleast that's what I feel)

Like at the carnival he saw Annie and Ellis with pure jealousy and made Ellis pay with his debit card to put him down and again assert his dominance by being Classist

  1. He Apologised to Annie about the debit card scene but never did he Apologise to Ellis !

  2. He lied about the piano trauma to make Annie Vulnerable and to bond and sympathize with him .

  3. He felt that other people on the island were irrelevant ( that could possibly be a character trait of his mom lowkey )

These are from my perspective so some opinions can obviously crash imo

You could say He's a beige flag

Reasons why I love Ellis

  1. He's super kind and humble , he has always been ready to help anyone

Like when Annie's dad gave a surprise visit to her she freaked out and told Ellis to take her away and he did that without any questions . He has always been a good friend to everyone in the group .

  1. He has been yearning yall . Like have you seen the way he admires her ? Omg

  2. He's such an amazing listener and insanely corporative

  3. Ellis was actually emotionally available ..

  4. He's smart and caring too like the list can go on and on lmao

People say his storyline was rushed but nahh they had an insane slow burn . It was perfect and not rushed. Infact it was Rory who rushed it imo.

But overall it was an insanely cute show loved everyone

So refreshing that this isn't based on a book or remake

Can we take a second to appreciate how refreshing it is that Sterling Point is an entirely original story?

In a TV landscape right now where it feels like every single teen drama or YA series is an adaptation of a book or a remake of something existing, getting a brand new story from scratch feels amazing.

It is honestly so nice not to have to deal with the exhausting discourse from people who have read the source material complaining about every tiny change, arguing about book canon, or constantly saying "well in the book it happened this way."

Getting to just watch a show unfold without a built-in fandom grading every scene on accuracy is such a relief. More original television, please!

This is why I'm team Rory

I rewatched the show again because I couldn't understand how so many people liked Ellis more (no hate to the character tho).

It's just that I counted how many times I felt buterflies in my stomach and I gotta say most of them were in Rory scenes, and that of course has a bit to do with personal preference, like I enjoy a guy with atittude, confidence, and proactive besides super funny and sarcastic, but also has to do with the fact that Ellis was acting disinterested and nonchalante. Annie even though he hated her, and tbh if I were her I would believe that he didn't like me enough to pursue me or was confused about how he felt.

I feel like Rory and Annie have better chemistry in conversations which is so important in relationships, and this is comming from a girl who dated a shy guy who couldn't express his feelings. It's just super hard trying to read someone's feelings specially as an anxious girl who needs reassurance. Also Ellis is always so bored when talking to her, like there's not joy in his face.

Besides that Rory is very clear in his actions towards Annie, like taking her out to celebrate her birthday and listening to her feelings.

I'm in the point of my life where I just whish society would stop romanticizing nonchalant men. Women are the prize and they should know that.

The rainy scene

Everyone keeps talking about their first kiss but OH WOW did it heat up when Ellis woke Annie up and it was raining…. Hot. Her and Rory had physical chemistry but so do her and Ellis. Her and Ellis are the whole package. At first I was like why on earth wouldn’t she pick Rory, but Ellis seems to get her in this moment. It’s a very Lorelai & Luke vibe.

Maggots for brain opening song is a premonition of the ending

me and my sister were talking the other night as to how good the playlist for the show was, we noticed that Annie waking up to Maggots for brain indicated Annie’s ending where she literally throw her entire life away(new york and college) for a man, I get it that she wanted to know her mom but she can always go there for break though, not throw her entire life away.

Annie’s age doesn’t make sense

I really like this show, especially the queer representation. However, the one problem I have with it is how none of the characters’ ages make sense. Now, I’m Canadian and I know that the legal drinking age here in Ontario is 19, so it doesn’t make a lot of sense how Annie and Rory got into the club on her 18th birthday. I guess they could have gotten fake IDs or something. But then there’s also the fact that they supposedly both graduated middle school together, but now Rory is one year older and going into his first year of college? The newest thing that I noticed on a rewatch is that Annie turned 18 during the summer, yet she’s going into her senior year in the fall. At least here in Canada, if your birthday is in the summer, then you turn 18 the summer AFTER your final year, not before. This is because schools take in people based on year of birth, not necessarily age. So, like, everyone born in 2009 would all go into kindergarten the same year, regardless of if they are 4 or 5. Maybe I’m being nitpicky, or things work differently in New York, but I’d be curious for people to weigh in on this.

Annie's Wavy Hair

As someone with wavy hair who has hated it for the majority of my life for it not being straight and not being curly, but the weird in-between, I loved seeing Annie with it.

The way they do her hair is stunning and is something that I haven't seen often in media. It has even inspired me to wear my hair natural more. Anyone else relate?

Reasons why I think Annie will end up with Rory

Okay hear me out!

People keep saying that she will end up with Ellis because Rory represents her life in NY and that she won't do the same thing her mom did and be unhappy.

Here is the thing, her mom NEVER stayed. She established her life in NY and married Steven etc. She didn't really stay and explore her relationship with Joe until she went back and filed for divorce (from what we know so far) which seems to be the opposite of what Annie is doing. She will actually have a relationship with Ellis but there's a big chance that she might want to go back to NY at some point. She grew up being an overachiever. You don't forget about going to college and being successful overnight. I feel like it's just on hold for now but she will think about going back and WHEN she goes, Ellis is going to be in trouble. If he comes with her, he will hate it. If he stays, she will just either reconnect with Rory or there will be another love interest.

Also, random af but in that scene where she was imagining her life with her mom, she had a kid and the kid had blue eyes lmao

But let's see what season 2 bring us. As you can tell, I'm team Rory. He is just emotionally mature and kind and I hope the writers continue to be nice to his character.

This show is perfectly flawed

How is it possible to love every single character on a show?? They all have their dumb moments but it's incredibly refreshing how real it feels. I'm obsessed!
