Hi, I'm a big fan of Sufjan from China🇨🇳. Today, through my shower, it struck me that whether the western fans would call Sufjan "Safeguard".🤔
Here in China, a lot of us lovingly refer to Sufjan Stevens as 舒肤佳,(Shufujia ),which is literally the translation of brand name for Safeguard — yes, the soap and handwash brand😂😂😂.
The reason is pretty simple and silly😸: when you say “Sufjan” with a Mandarin accent, it sounds kinda close to “Shufujia.” What's more, they share similar spelling form, isn't it?
Beyond this explanation, the nickname kind of stuck because it carries this cozy, comforting vibe — like he’s something clean, essential, and familiar. His music is so wonderful, cleaning our souls, youw know🥺🫶🥹🫶
