Brexit vote 10 years on: 'Disaster' for the North East or 'the best thing'?

When Sunderland followed shortly afterwards with an overwhelming vote to Leave, the tone was set for a night that would reshape the continent’s political landscape.

Our country is now on the verge of installing a seventh leader in a turbulent decade and, while perhaps not as all-consuming as the issue once was, the impacts of Brexit and the lingering question over what relationship the UK should have with the European Union (EU) remain topics of huge debate.

Whether it was it an "unmitigated disaster" or "absolutely the right thing" continues to be a source of serious acrimony here.

North East mayor Kim McGuinness was a relatively new Labour councillor in Newcastle at the time of the referendum and part of the Remain campaign, which she admits failed to articulate the benefits that EU membership brought and left her “completely devastated”.

European money had been used to help deliver projects like Gateshead's Millennium Bridge and the refurbishment of Ouseburn’s Toffee Factory.

And critics of Brexit have complained that replacement funding sources like the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) have failed to match the support that was once available, which included £433 million for economic development in our region between 2014 and 2020.

The prospect of Nissan’s car factory in Sunderland closing down if the UK left the EU, potentially costing the North East thousands of jobs, was a central part of the bitter referendum debate. The Washington plant is still here – though there have been regular warnings about its future since, amid complaints about mounting energy costs and global turmoil for the company that is resulting in significant job losses around the world.

A potential deal to build cars for Chinese manufacturer Chery, however, has offered Nissan’s 6,000 Wearside workers a recent boost. But Ms McGuinness said that “just because we didn’t lose Nissan, it doesn’t mean we didn’t lose a lot”.

The Labour mayor added: “Although a big anchor like Nissan has not left the country, that is in spite of them [the Leave campaign]. It is because of a huge effort on behalf of regional partners and politicians and national politicians to make sure we keep those jobs in the region – dare I say, at great cost.

“We have to think about more than just those huge businesses. Quite recently I knocked on a door in Easington and I spoke to a woman who told me a story about how her and her husband had a really successful online business employing 10 people out of Easington, trading with the EU. And they just had to shut down.

“Although we have not had that one fell swoop, thousands of jobs from something as big and high profile as Nissan, it doesn't mean there have not been many, many, many casualties resulting in an awful lot of job losses across the region.”

New journalism page - The Newcastle Eye

Hi everyone, it’s been a long time coming but my new page @the_newcastle_eye is finally getting underway with weekly posts.

Had a really good response in this chat over a year ago when I first suggested making an online newspaper that focuses on old school, quality journalism, face to face conversations, and no adverts.

The first two stories I have published include one anniversary piece about Albert Dryden, and another article on a man who runs a rather unconventional funeral home in Newcastle.

Have plenty more to come so please check it out:) thank you.

Aggresive beggar outside of bridges targeting little girls

Today I've walked past where tkmaxxx used to be and there's a bloke sitting there begging. When I was walking past I noticed he was trying to stop three young girls, just bairns by themselves and he's asking them to buy him food. They had to make an effort to get away from him. Has anyone else noticed this sort of behaviour from these beggars? I'm reporting him to northumbria police online

Labour lied about “city of sanctuary” status…

wasn’t one of the main things that Reform had “behind them” was getting rid of the accreditation for the city?

am i being daft or is anyone else confused as to why Labour would lie about this? the Conservatives replied to someone asking the same thing, and said “they wanted to appeal to certain voters”.

also - f*** Reform.

City parking

Hello, I'm visiting the Empire later in the week and was wondering if anyone from the area had any ideas on where is best to park to beat the queues! Last time we went, we were near the top of the multi storey at the nearby shopping centre and it took ages to get out! Thanks in advance for any ideas!

Help

Hey, 18M
I’ll be joining the University of Sunderland this September. Is there anyone who can help me find a parttime job during my first month there?
Also, could you tell me how much I can expect to earn per hour as a student and approximately how much I could make per month?

Looking for volunteers to help out at the Race for Life this Saturday (23/06) @ Herrington Park!

EDIT: to clarify the race is on 27/06 and not today, I posted this before my morning coffee 🫨

Hello!

This Saturday it’s the Race for Life (5k, 10k and Pretty Muddy) at Herrington Park, I’m volunteering and I got a message last night saying they’re a bit thin on the ground:

“Good evening all
Thank you for joining the chat.
We are still a little shy on volunteers for this weekend, to allow us to open all the obstacles to full capacity and give the participants the best experience (read that as more volunteers = more mud and water throwing!!)
If you could share with your networks and bring a friend that would be fabulous 😃 and massively appreciated”

Start: 08:45
Finish: approximately 15:00

Event volunteer roles:
You will be supporting in one of the following areas
on the day:
Enquiries: Welcoming participants, answering
questions and allocating new running numbers.
Start Crew: Assisting with the line up and start of the
event.
Course Marshal: Keeping participants safe and on
route, offering encouragement.
Water Station: Handing out drinks and cheering
runners on.
Finish Crew: Giving medals, snacks, and celebrating
with finishers.

If anyone fancies it, drop me a message and I can forward more details!
