C’mon
Like I know there’s a lot of hate towards Sydney but you can’t admit the fact that she doesn’t look like a bratz girl
The hair
The hat
The blue top
She was eating that fit up so hard 😭
These are all thanks to Gettyimages.
Hmm. Also noticed an embarrassing technical issue during this entire sequence- for some reason all the male extras are running away from giant Sydney Sweeney and not towards her...
Sydney Sweeney plays Christy Martin not as a mythic underdog but as someone carrying the physical and emotional density of a real life already half-broken before the cameras arrived. That is what surprised me most. The film understands that Christy Martin’s story is not really about boxing. Boxing is simply the architecture surrounding a far darker American loneliness.
Sweeney’s performance has a constant inward tension to it, like she is always bracing for impact even in moments of celebration. Her Christy smiles the way people smile after surviving something rather than enjoying something. There is an emotional hesitation embedded in the performance that keeps the film from collapsing into cliché. You feel the years pressing down on her long before the script explicitly tells you they are there.
Bravo!
