When did the Shadow first EXPLICITLY wear a red scarf, rather than just covering the lower half of his face with his collar?

Most sources I’ve found say that it wasn’t until the 1940 comic series where he started wearing the red scarf, because of the impracticality of finding a way to have his face covered in so many panels. However there are definitely pulp magazine covers from the late 1930’s where it SEEMS like he’s wearing it, but I’ve similarly seen it claimed he wore a high-collar that he could pull up to cover his face rather than the actual scarf?

The 1994 film with Alec Baldwin

This movie definitely is a classic as it was decades ahead of its time but back in 1994 no one was ready for it hence why it was a box office failure. Or they didn't follow the source material either. Because if you had had a faithful movie adaptation similar to the pulps; it definitely would have caught on
