How do small Canadian bands find gigs and book venues? Asking as someone trying to get started

As someone who is interested in getting into the indie music scene, I had a couple of questions. I have always thought that reaching out to bands or anyone in the music industry is a little intimidating so sorry if I come across as naive or ignorant.
- How do bands usually find gigs to play? How do you manage the bookings

- How do you find locations that would be good (as in how do you rate those venues)?

- Do you always need a band manager to help book shows and venues? or does all the logistics/bookkeeping happen without the need for a manager?

- What are your favorite locations to play at (I play rock music mainly)

- What are things I need to watch out for when reaching out to venues for bookings.

Feature : Dead Dog Records

Took a sick day and ended up at Dead Dog Records talking local music, DIY records and why your favourite new band might literally live down the street from you.

Also dropped off the first batch of Spin Class Local hype stickers — little markers for locally made records in shops. If you’re putting out music and want stickers for your releases, DM me and let’s get them onto some albums.

Featuring local recommendations, record store lore, and accessibility notes.

Looking for chamber music players in Toronto

Hey everyone,

I play classical piano (currently preparing for my ARCT exam). I've just finished university, and since I now have a lot more time for music, I was wondering if anyone in the GTA area (piano, string, wind players, etc.) would be interested in playing chamber music.

ICEMAN — What’s the word?

Nokia hit #2, so I want to see which song(s) will be hitting #1. In your opinion, what triumphs over the cellphone track?

You can name more than one, just don’t be clowning.

Looking for Toronto DIY house venues!

Hey! I own a record label and I’m taking a couple of my signed artists on tour this fall! I’m looking for some DIY venues in Toronto! I prefer the atmosphere of a basement/garage show much more than an established venue. Hope to get some answers here thanks!

Advice for getting gigs?

Hey friends. Relatively new to the scene, and a little on the older side. We're a vocalist / guitar duo who play bluesy acoustic covers of pretty much every genre and decade you can think of with some cool twists on songs everyone knows. The few gigs we've had have been shockingly well-received and we decided we really want to make a go of this and start performing more. The question is HOW and WHERE? We're definitely a more chilled out and soulful act (vs. rowdy pub crowd entertainers) so trying to figure out a) what venues would suit us and b) how to actually get ourselves booked! We're east end based, but happy to go anywhere that makes sense for us.

Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated!

Seeking Drummer for Full-Time Project, Rock ‘N’ Roll

We are a rock ‘n’ roll band with an album’s worth of original music already laid down, releasing in August.

We rehearse 2 to 3 times a week and have multiple gigs lined up between now and July 18.

We do covers out of necessity to fill longer shows (commonly 3 45-minute sets) but looking to continually move away from them as we learn more of the material I have already written and stuff we come up with together.

Bassist, lead guitarist, rhythm guitarist/vocalist all up to speed on all of our material… Drummer is stepping into a well-oiled machine.

Around $6k - $7k in debt… Gigs paying $400+ per night for now… Working our way out with gigs and current members have all agreed that money from gigs goes back into the band fund before we all start getting paid.

We also have a social media and photography team on board that is not getting paid until we start earning more.

Shooting for the moon, nothing less. Please reach out and we can start the conversation.

Female singer and bass player looking to join an alt rock/alternative band!!

Hey!! I’m a 21 y/o soprano singer and bass player in the east end looking to join an alternative band! I’d be fine with just singing if there were already a bass player as well. My favourite bands are Green Day, Bikini Kill, The Breeders, Garbage, and so much more! If anyone needs a singer or wants to start a band lmk!!

Looking for musicians in Toronto/GTA to start a live urban fusion band.

I rap/write and want to build a sound mixing:

• hip-hop

• live rock instrumentation

• R&B vocals

• soul/funk grooves

• cinematic/emotional energy

Searching for:

Guitarists, bassists, drummers, singers, DJs, producers, background vocals, and experimental musicians.

Influence-wise think somewhere between:

live band hip-hop, emotional storytelling, heavy performance energy, and genre crossover music.

This isn’t just “let’s jam once.”

Trying to build a team that can:

🎵 rehearse

🎵 create originals

🎵 record

🎵 perform

DM with your instrument, style, and any clips/music.

Let’s cook.
