Looking for a bike to loan or buy!

Hi everyone!! Just joined the Townsville hospital! Im looking to borrow a bicycle is anyone has a spare. I know beggars cant be choosers but if anyone has a spare bike thats running well and doesn't have issues PLEASE let me know. Im not getting paid while here and not a very tight budget. The current bike I have needs 300 dollars of work and I just cant afford that! Also, can someone please share the quickest route from Idalia to the hospital, ive been using the ross river trail (before the bike crapped out on me) and its quite long and in the wee early morning, quite dark too! Thanks Townsville Fam!

Where can I grab a quick dinner after 9pm on a Wednesday?

My flight doesn't get in until 8.45, and dinner won't be served on the flight.

Is there anywhere in town where a small group can get a meal after 9pm?

Is fast food the only option?

Sorry if it's a dumb question. I have looked around on google, but it seems like most restaurants shut at 8.30-9pm.

TIA

How's the job situation in Townsville at the moment?

Hi, I'm currently looking for a job that can help me qualify for a second visa extension, regardless of the location. I was wondering what the job market is like in Townsville at the moment.

I was considering both Townsville and Mackay because I heard that hospitality work there can count toward a second visa extension. However, I've also been told that there are already a lot of backpackers in those areas and not many jobs available.

I'm also thinking about applying to a meat processing factory in Toowoomba. The problem is that I'm a small Asian woman and I'm not physically very strong. A lot of people have told me that the work is extremely demanding and that I might not be able to handle it for long. To be honest, I've never done physically demanding work back hometown either, so the idea is a little intimidating.

At the same time, my English isn't great enough for some other jobs. I can communicate and speak, but my listening skills are still quite weak, which makes the decision difficult.

I've already been in Australia for 11 days and I'm still unsure about what direction to take. I feel a bit lost at the moment, so I'd really appreciate any advice about Townsville or other options that might suit my situation.

Thank you.

+ As for my background, I majored in ceramics and have experience using ZBrush, character figure modeling, and 3ds Max. However, I don't think those skills are very useful for finding work in my current situation. In terms of work experience, I have about one year of café experience and can make basic latte art. Other than that, most of my experience is from part-time jobs and customer service work.

Moving to QLD

Hello 🩵
My husband and I have been seriously considering moving to Townsville from USA and I wanted to hear some thoughts on the process for moving there, tips for finding the right place, and a good community! I have heard some wonderful things about the people, the city, and the way of life online, and from my hubs who was there for a time while in the Navy.
I’d appreciate any advice! Thank you! (We have a toddler, so would love to be near other families)

Looking at getting our children baptised (3 and 3 weeks). We’re from the UK originally so don’t have any ties to any church over here. Does anyone recommend any church’s to reach out to? We’re in Mount Louisa and there doesnt appear to be a local Catholic Church close to us. (From a quick google search)

Has Anyone Else Encountered This Group Around JCU and Townsville shopping centres?

There is a group that appears to be recruiting around JCU and Townsville shopping centres. They run Bible studies at JCU a couple of times a week, seem to be mostly young adults, and are often seen approaching people in pairs. They also seem to approach individuals who are by themselves.

The approach usually starts with a friendly conversation rather than an invitation to a Bible study. People are often asked about their faith, whether they attend church, whether they're a student, and other personal questions before being invited to meetings.

The concern isn’t that they’re studying the Bible. The concern is transparency. People should know from the beginning who a group is affiliated with, what they believe, and what they’re being invited to before making any commitments.

One reason I’m asking is that I’ve seen discussions online about high-control Bible study groups operating in other Australian cities such as Brisbane, Perth, Melbourne, and Sydney, where people initially thought they were joining a regular Bible study before later discovering the group had affiliations they weren’t told about upfront.

I’m not claiming this is the same situation, which is why I’m trying to gather information. Has anyone attended these studies or know which church or organization runs them? or that it could be a cult?

If you’re approached by any group, it’s always worth asking:
What church or organization are you affiliated with?
Who leads the studies?
What are your core beliefs?
Are you connected to a larger organization?

Also, don’t feel pressured to give out your phone number or personal information to people you’ve only just met.

I’m genuinely interested in hearing from anyone who has had experience with this group around JCU or Townsville shopping centres.

Magnetic Island solo trip

Planning to take a trip to Maggie for a few days. Travelling in a camper, but thinking to leave it in Tsv due to the price difference (over $100 to take on the ferry??) Went on the island last year with my family for a day and loved it, now back and want to spend a few days really slowing down and learning to live for the moment.

Some questions for you all.

  1. Any of you had experience with the hostels? Which is best, pros and cons? It looks like there's three and they all kinda suck according to reviewers. I would like somewhere to charge my laptop and do some work in the evenings, and quiet rooms with clean beds where there won't be people shouting outside until midnight... that's all I really need.

  2. Where to leave your car for free/safe? I've seen that the car parking next to the terminal is $8 a day, but if I'm there for a few, might prefer somewhere free that's safe. Any streets good for this? I left my car further west on the Strand for two weeks before and nothing happened to it. I have a steering lock.

  3. Top recommended activities on the island? I'm sure hiking and swimming will keep me busy enough. I run on a pretty tight budget so won't be renting a car but if bicycles and kayaks are cheap would be down to do some of that as well.

Paluma Bush Dance and Winter Markets - 27-28 June

There are a couple of community events happening up in Paluma at the end of June that might interest anyone looking for a relaxed winter day trip or weekend outing.

Paluma Bush Dance
Saturday, 27 June 2026
1:00 pm to 4:00 pm
Paluma Community Hall
Gold coin donation for adults and children

Wattle 'n' Gum Bush Band will be playing, with a casual bush dance at the Paluma Community Hall. No dance experience needed - just a relaxed community afternoon. The bar will be open from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm, and there will be a sausage sizzle from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm.

Paluma Winter Markets
Sunday, 28 June 2026
9:00 am to 1:00 pm
Paluma

There will be a sausage sizzle, fresh produce, plants, homemade preserves, baked goods, books, crafts, tea, coffee, and cake.

I have attached the PDF posters with more details and contact information.

Could be a nice excuse for a drive up the range and a cool-weather weekend in Paluma.
