Is this rust too far gone?
Looking to buy this 4Runner, the body is in great shape but underneath concerns me. The seller is telling me it’s just the paint flaking but it seems like there’s some thicker slabs of rust coming off, I’m just wondering if this is manageable with a wire wheel and rust converter.
4Hi or 4Lo?
Hello out there!! 👋
Quick question, my wife and I have been enjoying our new to us 09 V6 SR5 fully stock 4Runner for a little over a year now. Besides some Kumho All Weather tires, a little bit of brake work and routine fluids, I’ve done no other work on it. We’ve enjoyed some decent inclines and rock sections but no mud or real big rocks or boulders. I’ve only used 4Hi on our off road excursions thus far and same went for today’s adventure on Johnny Park Road near Hwy 7 near Allenspark, CO down to Hwy 36 and it did phenomenal! Besides a slip or two (poor line choice on my end) I didn’t feel like the truck struggled much at all. I’m sure a decent set of A/T tires would be a much better choice but not quite ready for new tires until we get a little bit closer to winter. Anyhow’s, I’ve been reading some mixed reviews on whether the type of trail I did today would have been better in 4Hi or 4Lo? Any insight is greatly appreciated!
Video is from after our adventure down Johnny Park Road!!
Never get tired of staring at this front end. This 4Runner hits different.
Tell me I’m not crazy
I recently took my 4Runner to the dealership for an oil change and rear brakes. They did both but now my brakes are squeaking and they smell like they’re burning after I’ve driven it. I took to back to the shop, and was told “they’re just noisy”. I’ve done brakes on a plethora of vehicles and have NEVER had that issue. I’ve used ceramic pads, and other different types and never have I had a set of brakes that’s just “noisy”. ALSO why does it smell like they’re burning? I understand maybe the first few days after, the factory stuff is wearing off but it’s been THREE WEEKS. They shouldn’t be noisy and they shouldn’t be smelling burnt. Tell me I’m not crazy 🫠
This might be the highest mileage 5th gen ever:
I was scrolling through Facebook marketplace and found a 2010 4Runner for sale. To my surprise it currently has well over 600k miles. I think the listed price is insane. Surely he knows he’s going to get low balled and rightfully so. How much would you pay for this, if at all?
From the 4Runner_6Gen community on Reddit: 2026 ORP 9k miles in and the transmission is no bueno
UPDATE : Got my car back yesterday 24 days later from when I took it in. Indeed the whole transmission was replaced due to debri.

First Purchase
I have ALWAYS wanted a 4Runner but due to their amazing resale value, they have never been in the budget. I was hopeful when they came out w the new models the older models would go on sale but boy was I wrong. I ended up with a smaller SUV but ready for something bigger.
I work from home and do not get out much except for on the weekends I attend a ton of yard sales and estate sales. I’ve started using my husbands farm truck because I can put more in it. Needless to say, I need something bigger. His truck is always dirty and now the ac is out 🥴
I have found a 4Runner limited down the road from me for what I believe to be a good price at $26k. Issue is, it has 115k miles. If you are a 4Runner diehard fan, would you purchase? It’s a 2020 model, one owner, clean carfax and the dealership it’s at just replaced all 4 tires. I honestly do not drive much, but I’ve also never bought a used vehicle with that many miles.
For context I will be financing ONLY bc I have absolutely no debt besides a car payment. I simply keep a car payment for credit reasons. So I know the APR could be an issue but I believe at 26k I would still have a cheap car note.
My husband and I want children in the near future. I have heard from a lot of moms that 4Runners do not fit car seats easily. But I believe it would be a super safe vehicle for a baby, car seat issues aside (correct me if wrong).
Please no negativity. I am only asking here bc I am completely at a loss. I would never purchase a vehicle with this many miles if I didn’t know the durability of Toyota, but am still leery of this purchase. Any insight is super helpful!!

4th gen frame to far gone. Been looking to upgrade to a 5th gen. Going to see a 2021 SR5 with 62k miles for 33k. Does that sound like a decent price. Everything seems pretty high for low miles here in NE
2024 4 Runner TRD Pro
Can someone please help me figure out where this noise is coming from? It started a few months ago and has progressively gotten worse. The noise is intermittent and usually occurs around 45–50 mph. It seems to get louder under acceleration/throttle and gets quieter when I let off the gas. It doesn’t necessarily happen every time I’m above 45–50 mph.
I’ve seen other posts saying the tires may need to be replaced, but I really don’t think the tires are the issue.
I took it to the dealership and they diagnosed it as the dust cover in the fender well. They adjusted/repaired it, but unfortunately that did not resolve the noise.
The mileage is shown in the video. Has anyone experienced this before or have any ideas what could be causing it? I’m trying to figure this out before I start throwing parts at it.
Should I buy ?4Runner 2005 SR5 4WD
Hello! I’m looking at buying this 2005 4Runner SR5 4WD V6 with 280,000 km (174,000 miles).
It seems to have been well taken care of, but my main concern is the rust underneath, as seen in the photos.
What do you guys think? Does the rust look concerning, especially the frame, or does it look mostly superficial?
Would it be worth buying for $8,000–10,000 CAD ($6,000–7,500 USD)? I live in BC, Canada, where 4Runner prices seem to be quite a bit higher than in most places
Best First Steps And Tips On A '04 4Runner
Hey guys! I'm new to the 4Runner community, as I just bought this '04 4Runner Limited 4WD V6. 230,000 miles on her with METICULOUS maintenance records from the previous owner. $5,500. Yes, I know it's not super cool since it's not the V8. I just don't want or need to spend 18k on a 20-year-old SUV, ok? Anyways, really getting to like her. What's y'all's take on her, and what are some of the first things I should do to/for her? She's just about stock right now, other than me taking off the running boards. Thanks, guys!
Thinking of getting a 2007 Toyota 4 Runner SR5 V8 4WD
It’s at 250k miles. 4 previous owners, and looking at its reports, all scheduled maintenance and repairs have been done with a full complete one this past January with fluid changes, brakes, tires, and a few other repairs. All owners also brought the car to the same Toyota shop.
At $3800, it’s on par with other cars in that same mileage range, and 4Runners have a reputation for longevity. So I’m pretty sold on going with this car. For the Midwest, minimal rust underneath, no rust on the body. No major dents or cracks. Drives smooth. Interior, heavy smell of cigarettes is about the only bad part. Drivers seat a bit worn.
I’m in a bit of a pinch as my other car was totaled in a hit and run a few days ago. So my budget is only $5k. But this 4Runner seems like the best bet.
If I do get this 4 Runner, what are some features or perks I should know about? I’ve always wanted a 4 Runner, huge fan of the 4Runner pickups from the 80’s. So I’m pretty excited to have the chance to drive one!
Rubberized protective coating?
Hey all - hoping to buy my first car next week, looking at a \~150k mile 2010 4Runner. Just got pictures of the underbody, does this look like it has been sprayed with a rubberized protective coating? Sorry if it’s obvious or not I haven’t spent much under cars (yet) If it has been sprayed, is that a deal killer?
Thank you all.
5th gen 4runner 2013 SR5 instrument cluster replacement.
I have a 5th gen 4runner. A 2013 SR5 Premium. I exported it to Central America and I have to replace ABS/Brake Assembly and Instrument cluster.
Making a trip back to the US to acquire the parts as we can’t find them here. My question is if anyone as tried some of the after market instrument cluster options like car trim home or nifty? Or if it is better to just acquire one from the dealer or an OEM looking one from a parts store? I spoke with dealership and they’ll sell me an instrument cluster if I bring photos of the current mileage. But kind of interested in a more modern one if they don’t have known issues.
Also, I will be very unlikely to sell this vehicle ever I am more likely to run it as long as it will run. So resell is not much of a concern here at all. I will always have a need for this 4x4 vehicle here. My main concern is having cluster work again. Mine has a few chips fried and needs to definitely be replaced but other than that and the ABS/Break module , everything runs great.
I'm looking at a 2020 4runner and i need advice.
It's got 111k on it. Very little rust. The frame looks good. It was used for towing, though. There is still a large shackle(probably 3 to 3.5 inch diameter and the gauge of the metal is probably about an inch thick) still attached to the back near the tow hitch. To me this says that someone was towing something really big with it. How worried should I be that this caused extra wear to the drive train? Should I bring this up in order to negotiate the price down? If so, what's me best angle?
Too much rust? 2015 4Runner limited.
95k miles asking for $27000. Just wanna check that rust normal?
