What’s it worth?
I get a lot of cars offered to me in my line of work. Recently an older client told me of her husbands 1990 Toyota Supra. I got excited at first but soon found out it’s the least desirable model. Body is pristine but it definitely needs work. Her husband wanted $9k but isn’t able to drive any more. She’s open to offers. Here’s what I found out when I went to go see it:
1990 Toyota Supra, NA, automatic, solid roof
Single owner since new, California car
No accidents, clean body
Interior is decent but needs some reupholstering
245k miles on the chassis, 100k on rebuilt engine (according to her)
Sat for 9 years after rebuild
TEMS disabled/unplugged
Need suspension all around, all 4 shocks are leaking/blown
Rear main seal is leaking as wells as power steering
Has a chatter noise near the rear of the engine, doesn’t increase when raising RPM’s
Engine leaks oil, unsure from where
Transmission shifts really rough, especially from first to second
Engine feels really sluggish. I know it’s not a turbo but it struggles to get to 60/70 MPH
I don’t think it’s worth the $9k but her husband wants to get as close as possible to that number. I don’t know if it’s worth it, considering the work it needs. I’m a backyard mechanic and know how to basic stuff but I feel like I’d be way over my head with it. Still, it is a Supra and the MK3 has a special place in my heart. I’ll include pics. Couldn’t take more as he was a little uneasy. What do you think? Worth it or what would be a reasonable offer?
