Looking for a tutor for a middle-schooler with ADHD

Hi. I'm a mom looking for a tutor for my kiddo with ADHD. I was really hoping to find a licensed teacher in the twin cities able to tutor in-person as I think that would be more beneficial for her, however, I am willing to consider online as well for the right fit. She needs help with math and writing especially, but also helping with the executive functioning piece, work completion, organization, study skills etc. I am hoping to pay around $50 an hour. I'd really appreciate the help. Thank you.

Need help in overcoming my fear of math 😭

Hello all! I’m looking for some insights into how I can better study math as an adult. I am preparing for a competitive exam where I am expected to study high school level of math but I am really dreading it and I want to understand how I can get past my fear.

So in school, I was an intelligent student scoring near full marks in subjects such as History, Geography, Languages and Business Studies. I scored decently in math too, just not as good as other subjects.

Even now, when I think of doing math, I always end up rushing head first into questions, making silly mistakes, and I am unable to apply logic to solve questions, relying on memory instead.

I want to crack the art of studying math to ace this competitive exam. Please help me 😭

How to grow tutor business

Hey everyone!

I recently started my own tutoring business about 3 years ago after leaving Varsity Tutors. I had about 5 students, but I didn’t really have a formal system. This year, I decided to make a website and make the business a bit more legit so I can gain clientele. The idea is to make tutoring more approachable, transparent, and personalized rather than feeling like a huge corporate platform.

Right now I offer both in-person and online tutoring, mostly for K–12 students. I offer a lot of subjects, but I’m wondering if I should find a niche. I was thinking of teaching ESL to francophone kids since I’m bilingual and live in Canada. I’ve been tutoring for about 8 years now, and mostly taught sciences. I did classroom teaching for a few years for Biology.

The business side has honestly been a much bigger learning curve than tutoring itself. Building the website, setting up social media, creating policies, organizing scheduling and payments. I expected all that. But wow is it hard to find consistent students.

For those of you who tutor independently or run your own tutoring business:
- Where do most of your students come from?
- Have Facebook groups, Reddit, Google Business, or local community groups worked well for you?
- Do you rely mostly on referrals, and if so, how did you get those first few clients?
- Are there any marketing strategies you tried that were surprisingly effective (or a complete waste of time)?

I know word of mouth goes a long way. I’ve let all my previous teacher coworkers know, friends, family, etc. so I’m hoping to gain some there as well.

I’ve posted in Facebook groups, and tried to comment when people would post saying they need a tutor. But I feel like I’m competing against a bunch of bots who sit and wait for these comments. I don’t know how to make myself stand out.

I’m not looking to become some huge tutoring company, I just want to gain 10-15 consistent students. I’d really appreciate hearing what worked (or didn’t work) for others who have been through this.

Thanks in advance!

When did you start feeling ready to teach?

Im a spanish speaker and an education student. Recently I was offered the opportunity to teach Spanish to a friend but despite my career (which has been more focused on theory than practice) I feel unworthy of teaching and charging for it. Does it all come down to practice?
I'm trying to do more research on grammar and teaching techniques but I fear I'll never feel ready.

I've also considered tutoring for free just to practice for a while.

And another question to language tutors, do you know all grammar terms?

Billing after lessons - why?

Tutoring agencies which bill the clients AFTER lessons at the end of the month… why?

You are literally 100% GUARANTEED to get screwed over by parents who just decide to not pay. I have seen this 1 million times. And then you waste time by chasing them up !

Looking for Gen Chem and physics tutor

Hi! I'm an incoming sophomore in college interested in general chem and physics tutoring this summer (maybe even ochem). I just finished my college's gen chem series and I performed below my expectations (B, B-, C+, it's known to be brutal) so I want to relearn gen chem (mostly foundational) to prep for ochem. I've never taken physics before and will be taking my school's general physics series next school year so I'd like to get a solid foundation for the subject. Please reach out!

Any math classes or tutoring platforms recommendations for a 6th grader?

My child is in 6th grade, and he is going into middle school math concepts, I really want to make sure he are building a strong foundation. Does anyone have recommendations for good math classes, programs, or tutoring platforms?

I'm mostly looking for something that helps build conceptual understanding for competitions or school math.

Has anyone had good or bad experiences with places like Mathnasium, Russian School of Mathematics (RSM), AoPS/Beast Academy, or specific teachers on Outschool?
