UMGC VR&E Benefits

I have a question. I started this past Tuesday and I am full time student and I’m using VR&E benefits. But I don’t know how my pay will look? Will I get a full time check in October even though there’s a one week break? How does these payments work? Is it… prorated payment in September, full payment in October, November, December then prorated at the end of December? Can anyone help me please lol

M.S. at UMGC is… yikes

If you’re considering getting your Masters at UMGC… maybe reconsider.

I’ve done several semesters in the Environmental Management, and I am truly blown away by how bad this program is.

  1. The learning materials are very frequently Youtube videos and (no, I’m not joking) class materials from other universities. Its ironic that the highest quality resources come from other universities, but expect 10+ year old digital books, loosely relevant websites, and 100+ page PDFs found off government websites. Its also really annoying that they dont provide their own materials because basically everything is a link, and over time, more and more of them become broken.

  2. There are no tests. I haven’t learned crap because the learning materials are garbage, and Im not actually required to learn anything. Most of your grade is based off discussions and assignments. There are quizzes, but laughably, these are open book/note.

  3. The teachers usually have full time jobs outside of UMGC. Meaning they don’t dedicate a whole lot of time towards the class, and can go days without responding to you.

  4. The teachers dont provide the learning materials. In fact, they don’t even set up the online classrooms. Basically all they do is grade. You can also tell that the classrooms are not updated because some quizzes are based off reading materials that have been removed due to broken links.

  5. This program is advertised as asynchronous, and yet you have to do a group presentation for every class. It is very difficult to do this is you work full time, and especially difficult if you live overseas.

  6. AI is becoming an issue. At this point, the majority of discussion posts/responses from other students are copy and pasted from ChatGPT. But the real problem is teachers using AI to grade your assignments. Thats literally their entire job, and some of them cant even do that. Not all of them, but Ive already seen a couple examples and I’m not that far into my degree.

TLDR: if you just need a degree to check a box, this will suffice. But if you actually want to progress in your career and you want to use your degree to do that, definitely reconsider.

Strict teacher and discussion post.

Since when did we have to start responding back to the replies our classmates post to our discussion post ? I feel my teacher is doing too much, and that is not apart of the rubric. It’s always been post your discussion post and respond back to three peers. Now I have to engage further and respond back to their replies on my post to receive full credit ? Is this something worth reporting if it truly affects my grade?

This is my professors words in her email

“Our discussions are designed to enhance your learning and serve as the online equivalent of in-class conversation. This means they should be interactive and ongoing, not a “post and leave” activity. Instead of simply submitting your main response, replying to three classmates, and moving on, please remain engaged throughout the discussion period.
Make sure to check back to read and reply to comments made under your post (including mine), and take time to read a variety of your classmates’ contributions. If someone responds to your comment, continue the exchange, as this back-and-forth is where meaningful learning happens”.

How much time did you spend on PACE each week?

I'm taking PACE111S.

I'm a new student and I was wondering how time consuming the class was. It would help me be better prepared and plan my next few weeks better.

How do I let UMGC know that I will not be attending because I'm going to a different university?

I recently got an email from collections in my personal email when I am not going to be transferring to UMGC from my community college and I was wondering if I would need to contact the admissions department.

Is a bachelor in finance worth it from this school?

Hi. Kinda late considering new semester is starting next week. I've been thinking between finance and accounting. Finance has more leeway for jobs, while accounting, although always needed, is very specific and demanding. I've been looking for jobs on both sides, and entry level accounting jobs are very questionably harsh. Financial related jobs however is more diverse but generic requirements. Similar to the degree, one is more specific and technical while one learns the basis and some accounting course. I've also heard that having an accounting degree can do various job while finance degree cannot. I'm more geared towards private accounting than public, although i'm pretty sure the accounting b.s at umgc is not enough to sit for cpa exam. Finance is more similar to what i wanted to do before (business mgmt) and i'm not the best at math but i've heard hard works pay a lot off in accounting. Anyone with either a degree in accounting or finance, pls help a lost soul

Reinstatement

Hi everyone,

I was just academically dismissed and I am going to start the process for reinstatement. Has anyone been through this and have any advice?

It really is on me I started school and then after my first semester I had a lot of deaths in the family and everything tanked for me mentally but I am now on a good medication combo and feel confident in doing way better. I just don’t want to lose this opportunity to get my degree and get on a good path

Thanks for help!

Phone Calls

I go to this school. That being said, I’ve blocked NUMEROUS phone calls (as they call me every single week) and they keep calling with different numbers. That is enough to make me transfer schools, leave me alone. If I need anything, I’ll reach out, I don’t need your spam calls every two seconds.

masters capstone group

Why would the teacher put us in groups of 8 for the capstone course? This is the dumbest thing ever; only 3 people have actually replied (including me). Why couldn't he split it up with 2 teams of 4 people?

Curious

Has anyone here tried Credit for Prior Learning (CPL), it says you can get credits for prior experience but did anyone ever receive credits, and is it worth it?
