The internet in your house is running on his idea right now, and almost nobody in this country knows his name: Arogyaswami Paulraj.

In the 1971 war, India lost a warship at sea. Its sonar had not been able to find the submarine that sank it.

India then tried to buy better sonar. The countries that made it would not sell.

So the Navy told one of its own officers to build it himself.

His name is Arogyaswami Paulraj.

He was born in Pollachi, a small town in Tamil Nadu. He joined the Indian Navy as a teenager and stayed for about 30 years.

The Navy spotted him early and sent him to the Indian Institute of Technology in Delhi for a master's degree. His professors told the Navy not to stop there. He finished a doctorate.

After the 1971 war he was given the sonar problem.

He had no foreign help, no foreign equipment and no permission to buy either. His team built the system from the ground up. It was called APSOH. It went into the fleet in 1983.

It was not a compromise. It is still considered one of the best sonars in the world.

He went on to set up 3 national research laboratories in India, in computing, artificial intelligence and military electronics. India gave him the Padma Bhushan.

Then he left the Navy and joined Stanford University in America as a postdoctoral researcher, starting again at the bottom.

While running wireless experiments there, he noticed something odd in his results about how signals could be separated from one another. He followed it.

What came out of it is called MIMO. In simple terms, instead of one antenna sending and one antenna receiving, you use several at both ends at once, and the signals stop fighting each other and start carrying far more data.

That is the foundation of every WiFi connection and every 4G and 5G phone on the planet.

The chairman of the Marconi Society put it plainly. Every WiFi router and 4G phone today uses MIMO technology pioneered by him.

He founded a company on it, which Intel bought. He founded another, which Broadcom bought. He holds around 80 patents.

He has the Marconi Prize, the IEEE Alexander Graham Bell Medal, the Faraday Medal, and a place in the United States National Inventors Hall of Fame.

Uppcs + Mppsc ?? Is it a sensible approach?

30M, from Gwalior, working in a Group B central government post since 2023. The job doesn’t feel very government like matlab woh feel nahi aata.

In 2023, after clearing CGL, i started UPSC preparation for a or 2 month but it couldn’t continue because ministry work was heavy and it didn’t seem possible to study seriously while working. Now the routine work is easier and more manageable.

Current plan is to prepare for state services. MPPSC was considered first, but there are doubts because vacancies are uncertain and good study material for some subjects is limited. UPPCS looks more attractive due to higher vacancies and better sources.

Now, My plan is to prepare for both MPPSC and UPPCS, with UPPCS as the main focus.

Is it a good plan ? is it a sensible approach,??

If yes, please suggest what to do further , like how to read 4,5 core subjects and then mp and up specific subject differently?

Current progress: Polity study started — 28 videos by Jatin Gupta watched and studied from his handouts along with Laxmikant.

Will taking online UPSC coaching from Unacademy be a good idea for UPPSC?

I was thinking whether online coaching from Unacademy would be a good idea. I took their 3 day trail a few weeks ago and liked their lectures specially of Arti Chhawari mam of Modern History. Their YouTube classes are nowhere as detailed as their course's classes.

I want to prepare for both pre and mains.

UPPSC Prelims Science (2018–2025) — PYQ Trend Analysis | What to Actually Study?

I went through a detailed 2018–2025 analysis of UPPSC Prelims GS Paper-I Science and found some interesting patterns.

Science is not the biggest section of the paper, but it is also not something you can afford to ignore. More importantly, the questions are becoming less about blindly remembering isolated facts and more about understanding basic concepts + their application in everyday life/current developments.

Sharing the complete trend below. Hopefully this helps someone planning their Science strategy for UPPSC.

  1. First, how much Science is actually being asked?

Out of 150 question

So the range is roughly 13–27 questions, with Science consistently contributing around 9–15% in most recent papers.

The important point is not just the number of questions.

The distribution inside Science tells us where the actual preparation effort should go.

  1. Biology has been the biggest component

Across 2018–2025, the analysis identifies:

Biology — 66 questions

Physics — 39 questions

Chemistry — 34 questions

Total classified Science questions — 139

Biology therefore deserves the highest priority if you are trying to maximise your return from Science preparation.

The year-wise pattern is also interesting:

2019: Biology 14

2021: Biology 12

2023: Biology 8

2024: Biology 8

2025: Biology 4

So Biology has fluctuated, but it remains the largest cumulative component.

  1. BIOLOGY — What should you actually study?

This is probably the most useful part of the analysis.

This is one of the strongest recurring areas.

  1. PHYSICS — Don't treat it as only numerical physics

This is where many aspirants make a mistake.

UPPSC Science questions can come from very basic conceptual physics and applications.

The strongest areas in the analysis are:

There is a very important lesson here:

UPPSC can revisit the same basic concept but change the framing of the question.

So simply solving a PYQ once is not enough.

Understand the concept behind it.

This is another interesting trend.

Easy questions are declining while moderate/difficult questions are taking a larger share.

This means the old strategy of memorising 500–1000 random Science facts is becoming less attractive.

Conceptual clarity matters more.

  1. STATIC vs CURRENT AFFAIRS — This is probably the biggest strategic takeaway

The analysis divides Science questions into:

Look at the shift:

So the preparation strategy should NOT be:

A better approach is:

For example:

Space Science → basic concept + recent ISRO missions

Batteries → chemistry + EV developments

Biotechnology → basic genetics + CRISPR developments

AI → basic terminology + recent technological developments

Environment → chemistry/biology + contemporary environmental issues

  1. FUTURE PRIORITY — If I were preparing now

Based strictly on the trend analysis, these are the areas I would put at the top of my revision list.

"Low probability" obviously doesn't mean "don't study".

If I had to prepare Science from scratch, I would divide it into 4 layers.

First solve 2018–2025 Science PYQs.

Don't just mark answers.

For every question ask:

Instead of revising 500 random facts, make thematic one-page sheets.

For example:

This is much more efficient.

  1. Final takeaway

The biggest lesson I get from the 2018–2025 trend is this:

UPPSC Science is not purely a "ratta" section anymore.

The paper still asks plenty of static facts, but recent papers show increasing integration with current developments and a greater share of moderate/difficult questions.

So I would prepare Science like this:

PYQ → Concept → Static notes → Current affairs connection → Revision

And if time is genuinely limited:

Biology > Physics/Space + EM Spectrum > Everyday Chemistry > Current Science/Technology

Don't completely ignore any subject, but prioritise according to the PYQ trend.
