Dedicated to UWC and all the challengers

Hi there. I don't know exactly what was going on before, but I saw what people were saying below, and I guessed you might be going through something hard right now. So I wanted to say this — for you, and for me too.

From what I can tell, you're about fifteen — that's an age full of confusion, but it's also when your mind and abilities are growing the fastest. It's completely normal to hit setbacks now. I want to share my story with you — not to ask for sympathy, and not to make you feel ashamed of anything — I just hope it might give you some perspective, some way of thinking about things.

When I was 8, my father got seriously ill. He needed brain surgery, and afterward, half of his skull was gone. From then on, my mother was the only one earning money in our family. Later, when I started middle school, she scraped and saved to send me to a tutoring program. She was sleeping only four or five hours a night. I couldn't bear it, so I stopped going. I had to step away from books, away from the classroom, and rely only on what my teachers taught in school. That was the first time I tasted what it felt like to lose access to education. My grades fell apart.

But I'm grateful to my mother — she taught me never to give up, and how to endure hardship. I'm also grateful for the internet. Through online courses, in just six months, I taught myself the entire ninth-grade curriculum, which is how I made it into high school — entirely self-taught. That was the most lost I've ever felt, and also when my ambition burned the brightest. I slept maybe three hours a night, and there were still so many problems I couldn't solve. Later I found communities like Reddit, full of people who were kind and, honestly, kind of amazing. They taught me how to work through problems and how to think. I never matched the top students, but I still believe what I achieved was something built out of countless people and countless small chances lining up.

Then my father passed away. He had always been my biggest supporter. He never got to see me get into high school — that's a regret I'll carry forever. The winter he died was brutally cold. His insurance left us 50,000 RMB, and my mother scraped together everything to send me to a well-known private high school. I loved my time there. My classmates were so warm-hearted, and never once looked down on where I came from or my family's situation. What moved me most was that even the cafeteria staff looked out for me. It made me realize — even someone as small as me can receive real kindness from others. Later, I started helping them back whenever I could. That experience taught me something important: helping people without expecting anything in return makes you feel lighter, freer. It taught me so much.

What I mean is — you will never feel ready. But don't let that stop you. So many people want the glory without wanting the responsibility. So many people show up for the ribbon-cutting but never do any of the real, hard work behind it. Be different. Leave behind something that actually matters to the people around you. And always remember — you can't take it with you when you go, but you can pass it on. Look for hope inside the challenges and the chances. Nobody starts out knowing everything. You just need time.

I want to leave you with a line from Mao Zedong: "世上无难事,只要肯登攀" — Nothing in this world is too hard, as long as you're willing to climb.

I'm also in the middle of applying to UWC right now. I'm not expecting to get in. But what I want to tell you is — it's never the result that changes you, it's the process. The moment you start doing something, you've already begun to grow. It's like a stonemason striking a rock — the first hundred times, nothing happens, the stone doesn't crack. But on the 101st strike, it splits open. We all know, deep down, it was really those first hundred strikes that did the work.

To Lower_Client1106

Hi there! I'm Steven and I saw your post in the UWC subreddit. I understand if you are feeling this way, but please don't feel bad about yourself. We and the society as a whole often compare everyone, and it seems easy to assume that some people are more accomplished than others. But the truth is, different people have different strengths and different missions, some people discover them early, while others discover them late. The ones with impressive extracurriculars, well they just got it early, and that doesn't make you any less qualified than them. UWC doesn't only value what the applicants have achieve in the past, they also value what you can do in the future. I saw that you're open-minded and are willing to become a better version of yourself, and that's what truly matters. One of UWC's core beliefs and mine is, "There is more in you than you think."
Reflecting on my personal experience, it wasn't that different from ntwana's. I had practically no extracurriculars too, and all the other applicants I met on selection day came from international schools while I didn't, and everyone else was outgoing while I was the only one who was shy and nervous. But UWC isn't looking for someone with a perfect resume, and they don't write people off with just assumptions. Ntwana has already explained this in the best way possible, they're looking for a real person with genuine interests, experiences, and potential. The selection process is less about impressing the national committee, but more about showing them who you are and making that connection. And it's absolutely okay if you are still unsure about a lot of things, because you are already willing to change that.
I hope everything will work out for you! And have a good day!

In honour of applications starting again, tell us your favorite story from your UWC experience!!

I'll probably never get tired of hearing UWC stories and would love to hear from current students and alumni. What's one UWC memory you'll never forget? It can be something big or something surprisingly small that captures what the experience was like for you.

IS UWC worth it?

:

Hi guys, I’m currently in Year 9 in South Africa and I’m seeking help because lately I’ve been giving up on trying to be myself. I know a lot of people say, “be yourself,” but I’m having a hard time figuring out who I am. When I ask people about their extracurriculars, they seem like such good candidates, and I end up comparing myself to them, which I know isn’t good, but I can’t help doing it.

When it comes to extracurriculars, I’m not really that type of person, and nothing I do feels like it truly reflects who I am. For months, I’ve been asking myself if being myself is enough, and honestly, the answer never feels like yes. My NC only takes 5 to 20 students, and I can’t help but already disqualify myself, which just leads to more spiraling.

My main problem is this: am I enough? If I’m just a girl with decent grades and a few extracurriculars, will I get accepted? And I hate that I already think the answer is no. I’m asking people who got in, or alumni: is it worth it?

Which UWC?

Hi, I’m applying through my NC for UWC 2027 and have to prioritise which schools I’d prefer to attend. I’m aware that I don’t get to choose though but I’d still like to research which schools I think would be the best fit for me.

So are there any schools you’d recommend or not recommend and why? I just want to hear people’s experiences and what they’ve heard about the different schools.

I have broad interests academically; maths, science, psychology, society. And academics are important to me. I like to run, draw, be active and creative. But those are all things that I can do myself. So I don’t really have any specific requirements. I would just love to go to a place where I can meet new people, feel a sense of community and fit in, learn, broaden my horizon.

Any advice? Thank you in advance :)

Should I Try Applying to UWC This Year?

Hiiii. I am currently just become a senior in my shs. Lately I keep asking myself should I try applying this year bcs last year I didn't do that because I'm still too scared to left everything behind. I'm trying to explain my condition rn. Next year, I'll be applying to university and my parents (especially my mum) forbid me to take a gap year (even tho I already preparing myself if i have to do that) due to economics things, sadly. In terms of university, my parents allow me to go abroad as long as I get full-ride scholarship.

Lately my thought has driven me crazy. If I applying to UWC, I believe that my percentage of being accepted atleast not fully zero. If I didn't get into next selection, I can get focused to university. If I get into next selection and/ get accepted, my opportunity to get into top university, especially UK, incrased like crazy because my country's high school certificate can't be used to apply in most of international university. But if I missed this opportunity I'll regret my decision but I'm following the term that my mom set up for me.

Maybe you guys can give me some advice, I'll happy to listen to ur advice. <3
