Engineering Laptop

Budget: 5K or less
Country: USA
Use Case: College/Engineering/Personal
Preferred Specs: was looking at 5070ti, newer gen arrow lake or panther lake intel processors
Notes:

Hi! In the process of buying a laptop for college that will last all 4 years and beyond. So for I've been considering the ASUS G16, Lenovo yoga pro 9i, and possibly a thinkpad ( though not sure which one to get). Money really isn't much of a factor but reliability is important to me and I feel like the ASUS would struggle in that department? Seems like the yoga pro 9i might have a much shorter battery life though reliability should be good.
Going in as a mechanical engineering major so would like something with significant power for solid works and such, but also good battery life and portability for on campus traveling. Maybe there is an option I'm not considering? Love apple and MacBooks but feel that there would be too many Software compatability issues for engineering, though I could see myself buying one for personal use later on out of college when workplaces typically provide a laptop for you. Want it to be fast and efficient with little lag and loading times overall. There are desktops available but I don't want to have to rely on those.

issue with housing as an incoming freshman

I have a bit of an odd scenario. So basically i had been enrolled and planning to go to KU all the way from nov 2025-february 2026. I had everything in place, housing contract included. But after that i had a change of heart and decided to cancel all of that and decided to pursue a career in the U.S. navy. Now however i sadly got separated due to medical reasons. Now that i am back home in Kansas ive reinstated my enrollment and do plan on attending KU. The only issue is I hope to live on campus but it states i am #133 on the stand by list. So my question is does anyone have experience on the standby list and if so, if they were around my position in line did they get a room by move in day ?

The new KU (Luminare) health insurance is worthless

An employee of 21 years who pays around $400 a month for insurance only to have to pay $155 for an annual physical. This isn’t a specialist it’s just a routine yearly physical. KU Health System continues to screw over their employees. (And we still have to pay for parking!)

Users kept choosing the “wrong” feature, so I rebuilt around it

I built an app for people to swipe on topics, match with someone who disagrees, and get scored on civility.

The idea was that if you were constantly an asshole, your civility score would follow you.

But I added a side feature called toxic mode where there was no civility score and people could just argue.

Every user went straight to toxic mode.

That taught me two things.

First, users do not always care about the product you think you built. They care about the part that creates the strongest reaction.

Second, my funnel was way too long for something that needed two people online at the same time. Ad to site to app store to install to onboarding to swiping to matching to finally chatting was just way too much friction.

So I was like ok lets just see if the friction is the issue here

I made a lightweight browser version focused on the behavior people were already choosing.

No install. No app store. Just pick a topic and jump in.

The bigger lesson for me was to watch what users actually do, especially when it is not what you wanted them to do.

Curious if other founders here have had users prefer the “wrong” feature and whether you followed it or kept pushing your original vision.

Is 5 CS classes a semester doable?

I’m transferring to KU from another university. I hope I can finish in 4 semesters. But for that to happen, there must be 2 semesters where I’ll be taking 5 EECS courses. Is this workload doable?
