Students holding UA accountable - Eric Schmidt commencement

Hi, all!

The 2026 commencement was a hot-mess-express, and students are still trying to hold UA admin accountable for the decision to not only bring him, but award him an honorary degree without the approval of our faculty senate (which destroys the idea of shared governance on our campus, which is something people have fought for for decades). Basically, Garimella and Dean Garzione of the College of Science decided they would ignore students, faculty, and literally EVERYONE else on campus (including our ASUA student government!!) and bring Schmidt because they thought his telescope would make the school money. He's been booed, and it's been discussed widely in the media (see here, here, here). One recent UA Alumna and former Daily Wildcat reporter has shared this on substack about the speech.

One piece that IS missing in the coverage, though, is that Eric Schmidt is also an abuser and that is why students originally organized - they didn't even know how AWFUL his AI-worshipping speech would be. You can see news stories on that here and here.

Students are trying to hold UA accountable for this. If you're interested in staying in touch about the ongoing discussions re: shared governance, anti-violence, and more, I would check out affiliate student organizations (who ARE official UA clubs! :) ): FORCE (Feminists Organized to Resist, Create, and Empower, force_ua on Instagram), Planned Parenthood Generation Action, and Students For Socialism (ua_sfs on Instagram).

Stay tuned for how incredible students are!!

Party culture? Is it weird if an online student who is visiting Arizona pulls up for the parties?

Heard UofA is a big party school. Here is the thing. I’m am online student because I’m military, but I happen to be near University of Arizona now.

Is it strange if I pull up, even though I’m a student I’m just an “online” student lol.

Billionaire sex abuser and former Google CEO Eric Schmidt was continuously boo'ed by students, parents, and alumni throughout his entire commencement speech.

Boy, they really missed the mark having Eric Schmit.

Class of 1996 here. I went back to Tucson last night for my nephews graduation.

I honestly had no idea who the speaker was, or the controversy until the booing started. So I looked it up and of course read about what a giant piece of shit Schmit is.

How do you have this fucking guy speak at graduation? Like, how do all the higher ups sit around and go, "yeah, we really need to stick to our guns and have this guy?"

ASU gets Harrison Ford. We get an Epstein Class dickhole who no graduating student can relate to.

Way to really miss the moment.

Microwave war in dept break room 😂

There is a break room shared by the MENAS dept, Judaic Studies dept, and Women & Gender studies dept 4th floor of the Marshall building, and there is this hilarious passive aggressive microwave drama going on. 😭

Every couple of days, a new post is being taped to the microwave and no one knows who is involved roflmao! 🤣

These are some names we've come up for the ongoing conflict:

The Fourth Floor Microwave Crisis

Microwave Mutually Assured Destruction

The Microwave Geneva Convention Violations

If anyone is around during the summer, please do check the break room to see how this battle progresses, and share pics 😹

What Cyber Operations classes will transfer to ECE?

Hey yall. I was admitted with my 2nd choice Cyber operations while my first choice is ECE. Just found out yesterdayI need to take the placement test since it’s been a while for my transferred Math classes. I am going back to college after 8 years.

My question is, what classes I could take for Summer A which will transfer over to ECE? Will any electives transfer over?

Also does anyone know what material will placement test cover? I am planning to take the test during the summer.

Online Classes/Brightspace

I have an online class that starts on May 18th. In the past, they usually have the courses available several days out from the class start date so you can get familiar with the syllabus and course content.

It’s been a while since I’ve taken a class online, just wondering if they stopped doing that or not. I still don’t see it populating in brightspace so I feel like I’m missing something unless they will strictly release it on the 18th.

Thanks in advanced.

EDIT:
Thank you everyone!

What would you do if you failed a class?

This is lowkey embarrassing, but I might fail one of my classes tomorrow and was wondering what you guys would do if this happened to you? This semester I got really depressed, and with no motivation my grades now reflect that. I have my last final tomorrow, and although I only need a 30% to keep a C I’m not sure I can do that.

Elementary Persian I at risk of being cancelled!

Hey everyone, if you’re looking for a fun and genuinely easy elective for the fall semester, please consider taking Elementary Persian I!

It’s a super approachable course, and honestly this is one of the most important times to learn about Persian language and culture. With everything happening involving Iran right now and our own country, it’s valuable to move beyond social media headlines and actually engage with the people, history, and culture of the region in a meaningful way.

Right now only four students are enrolled, so there’s a real possibility the university may cancel the course if enrollment doesn’t go up.

The course is being offered:

• In person: #28292

• Online/virtual: #46499

Persian is an incredibly beautiful language with a massive literary and cultural legacy, and it would be really sad to lose Persian offerings at U of A. Even if you can’t take it yourself, please help spread the word 💛

(ADVICE WANTED) Past due balance, SAP appeal…I’m just screwed I think

Hi! I’m a 19 year old freshman who’s just finishing her first year, and long story short it went terribly.

I had to withdraw from classes last semester due to my mother needing help at home. Dad got arrested and she needed help around the house…second semester I returned full time on campus with a SAP warning due to low completion rate.

This semester I thought I could juggle both taking care of my family and classes…turns out I was horribly wrong. I’m ending with a 1.5 and little hope for the future.

I arranged an academic meeting with my advisor to get started on a SAP appeal that I already know I’ll need to write, but the kicker here is that even if it gets the okay, I’m unsure if I’ll even be able to have a chance to get my GPA up due to past due balances.

I didn’t get enough aid to cover this semester in the first place, which makes me unable to register for classes. And my GPA is too low to transfer anywhere else…which was my plan. I’m just feeling really lost right now, any advice is welcomed but please don’t be too mean about all of this.

Mathematics Professor Misha Stepanov, age 51, died Friday after being hit by a car in a crosswalk.

I want people to be aware of this, not only because Professor Stepanov is my current professor but also because he is the FOURTH UA PEDESTRIAN TO DIE FROM AN INTERSECTION ACCIDENT. This is becoming tragically eerie, and the Tucson metro needs a major safety upgrade.

Dorm rent appears in my Bursar account even though I’m leaving soon

I’m currently living at La Aldea and I’ve already scheduled my move out day for a little over a week from now, which is before the end of May. Today I checked my Bursar account and it shows that I have a new charge for rent. I already paid May’s rent so this would be for June, after I leave. Could this be a mistake on their end? Is it that it will disappear once I leave? Should I try contacting somebody, or is this normal and will resolve on its own?

Gate entrance preference?

Hi everyone!! My mom was wondering which gate entrance is best to enter for the big graduation. I don't really know what she means by "best," I guess which one is most convenient?

BRC Hold on Payment

My wife is a U of A student and accidentally wire transferred out of the wrong account, resulting in the payment bouncing.

The year is 2026 and I have about 20 methods of electronic payment I could pay U of A the $60 we owe them, but they locked our account due to the bounced check and will only accept a cashiers check, money order, or cash mailed to their address. So now I need to mail them cash tomorrow. We called and tried to get them to accept any form of electronic payment but they won't.

This is just really annoying and unnecessary, and I needed to vent.
