Steam Frame impressions coming from a Quest 2 (togheter to a better UI)
I've had my Steam Frame since Monday 06.10 and I really like a lot about it.
Beat Saber with the ARM64 mod runs crazy well: 144 fps, super smooth, and good resolution.
On the first day I struggled with motion sickness, which I never had with my Quest 2. It got better once I put in the glasses spacer.
I'm in love with how moddable this little lightweight thing is. I could run Vesktop (Discord for Linux) standalone on the headset and share what I'm seeing with my friends, all while playing Beat Saber also standalone at 120 fps, which is crazy.
But coming from a Quest 2, there's also some stuff I don't like:
- The UI feedback could be better. When I start an app, I don't know if it's loading or if it crashed, because sometimes it just takes longer to load.
- The reseting to the Controller Mode.
- Closing Beat saber im waiting for the UI to Popuo like on the quest laugh about myself when i notice i have to press the steam button :D
- Sometimes when I shut down or restart my Frame, it asks the first-time setup questions again (region and language selection). Other times it's fine, and I don't understand why.
- In Beat Saber it looks like it's crashing between songs. I just see the environment for 1 sec. with no feedback on what's happening, but then it comes back into the game and i can sart playing the song.
I really like everything the community is doing right now, like FrameTop, just-video and all the other cool tools I haven't even found yet.
So I'd love to hear from you guys: how could the UI be improved? What are you struggling with? Right now it feels like everything is hidden somewhere, has no feedback to the user, or I still don't really understand what I can do with the Frame. Maybe we can come up with a good UI design for VR together, and maybe Valve reads it and does something about it (or the community does). I'd love a simpler UI, so if you have mockups or ideas for how to combine stuff, please share!
I'd also love to see custom startup screens from different people, like a cat playing with the Companion Cube etc. 🦌 :D
