Humanity isn't nice, and convictions/touchstones kinda need to be dark to work

First off, this is about mechanics, not about limits. Games are meant to be fun, and everyone has limits to what is fun. Obviously, work out with your group what are hard limits, and what is just good roleplay. Now, moving on to the actual points after the mandatory disclaimer:

Ok, so think about the game mechanics... You have Chronicle Tenets. These are the "It's sorta not ok to do this, but it's still allowed to roleplay this" actions that the player can take, but with consequences than range from 1 to 3 stains. Lets say a Chronicle has the following Tenets

>Petty theft up to 30 hours minimum wage = 1 stain
Major theft over 30 hours minimum wage = 2 stains
Blackmail, extorting, non-con intimacy (inc. feeding) = 1 stain
Human trafficking, slavery, addiction creation, blood bonding = 2 stains
Deliberate, unnecessary non-superficial injury = 1 stain
Deliberate, unnecessary permanent injury = 2 stains
Deliberate, unnecessary ending of mortal/kindred = 3 stains
Deliberate reckless endangerment (inc. Masquerade breaches and not staying fed) = 1 stain

Now, none of these things are what you'd expect from polite human behavior in your daily life, but these are all things humans actually do, which brings me to my first point: Humanity isn't a measure of politeness, niceness, nor morality, and neither is the inverse true. Consider the following moral issue with organ harvesting: Humans have two kidneys, two liver halves, two lungs, a heart and plentiful bone marrow, all of which can save a human life, which means more lives can be saved than lost by killing and harvesting humans for parts. This is a moral argument centered on the greater good, but it is something most would also consider inhuman to even consider. Moral does not equal human.

Further, unless you're a Farmer or Consentualist, you've already got some issues, but lets say you want to roleplay a Brujah or Gangrel street ganger who gets into violent fights at the drop of a hat, or a Domitor, or a Ventrue mob boss running a drug ring... that's a one way ticket to wighthood, mechanically, which really limits role-playing. So, how do you roleplay complex characters instead of My Little Pony: Friendship has Fangs Now.

This is where Convictions come in, allowing you to block 1-3 of the up to 3 Chronicle Tenet stains so long as you have a good role playing reason to do so, and an example of a Touchstone who can show that this is a HUMAN, not MORAL, life path... but at the cost of taking Stains if you turn you back on the Convictions keeping you human.

For example, if you wanted to play the drug running Ventrue mob boss, you might take the following:

>1) Business is Business: Take one less stain from harm caused by situations created to make money, but take a stain when deliberately getting in the way of making money.
Touchstone: a human embezzler who scammed countless working class elderly out of their retirements with a ponzi scheme.

>2) Power has its Price: Take one less stain from harm caused in order to gain or maintain power, station and control, but take a stain when deliberately risking your position or control.
Touchstone: a human politician who has screwed over countless people by letting corporations dump toxic waste in return for campaign favors.

>3) Not my Brother's Keeper: Take one less stain for creating situations where people freely harm themselves with your enabling, but take a stain when you try to restrict others from making their own bad choices.
Touchstone: a human meth dealer who sells to highschoolers in order to keep a stead market of addicts, uncaring of the lives of addiction and prostitution created.

These actually create mechanical benefits to prevent Stains from your role-playing choices while forcing you to confront the reality of the character you've chosen to play and what that means for the world. You CAN play this character as part of Humanity, but you have to confront the part of Humanity that represents. You can sell drugs because you're making money (1), and it's their choice to buy (3), you can feed on the unwilling since it lets you use powers and maintain control (2), and you can harm people who get in the way of you making money as a mob boss since it's profit and power lost (1 & 2), plus it was their choice to go after you (3)... But what does it make you to do that? You have to think about your convictions to apply them, and consider who else that resembles... and if that's who you really want to be!

Now, consider the more vanilla alternative:

>1) It's Nice to be Nice: Take one less stain from being nice to people, but take a stain whenever you're a dick to others.
Touchstone: Your sweet grandma who never hurt a soul and who bakes cookies for the homeless with her church group

See the problem? You didn't fix the feeding issue, or the dangers of violence eroding who you are... You just added another burden, because now every time you blow a fuse or flip off traffic, memories of how you failed to live up to your sweet ol' grandma's example will remind you of how far you've fallen from her version of humanity, and drag you down into giving up and becoming a mindless beast in eternal wighthood.

Humanity isn't about being moral or nice, and Convictions and Touchstones exist to remind of that there is Humanity even in the worst atrocities and foulest examples of human kind.

Best haven business ideas for money, feeding and meetings

Haven businesses serve 3 main functions, imo; resources (aka raw money, weapons, personnel, tools, etc), ease of feeding, and a front to explain why all those weird dudes who probably shouldn't know each other keep meeting at this one place

Bars/clubs/strip joints are an obvious go to since people of all walks of life go here, it can produce good cashflow, and lots of strangers pass through to drink from or blood bond.

I like food joints, and would probably run a Filipino restaurant (Haven x+, Business xx+) that just happens to serve Dinuguan (pork dish with blood gravy, insanely tasty) with a fleet of unmarked food delivery vehicles (Transportation xx, maybe Check the Trunk x) and workers (Herd xx+). This creates cashflow, transportation, source of toolkits, herd+huntibles+bagged animal blood for feeding, and a reason for people from all walks of life to have an excuse to meet at a single spot on a recurring basis. A coterie could start out with this for as little as 7 dots.

Another I like is occult bookstores that maybe sell crystals, incense, horror movies, etc... but that is a bit on the nose...

What are some of your favorite ideas for how to fund your coterie while providing a safe haven?

Any clever uses for Dominate on VTM V5?

I need some suggestions for the uses of this discipline. Clever ideas, or clever commands.

I synergise it with the amalgam animalism to produce animal messenger and animal command.

So, any recommendations for all of this? How do you play it?

VTM V5 Story idea to kick off a chronicle: Trial by Fire

Every character starts with the flaws of Resources: Destitute and Haven: No Haven, and characters will have zero dots in Status.

The Coterie will have a one dot Mobile Haven (likely a simple RV), Check the Trunk, and a ghoul blood bonded to the Sheriff or one of his Hounds to watch over them during the day in exchange for a daily Vitae donation (not optional) from a random player. The ghoul can drive the RV, but largely is of no help and only is there to observe and report back. He will likely sleep most of the night so he can keep watch during the day.

Players may (and should) take Mawla for their sire and Contact (Mawla) for their sire's resources. Failing to have a sire makes the player orphaned, a defacto Caitiff disowned by their sire, and leave them with no proper point of entry into the Camarilla beyond what they can forge alone, which is a massive barrier to entry until they can earn replacement contacts to support them.

The players will have to work together to gain at least the following each; one dot of Haven, one dot of Fame (Kindred), one dot of Influence (Camarilla), one dot of Status (Camarilla), and a blood bonded retainer (probably ghoul) to look after them during the day all while trying to stay fed, avoid breaches and deal with the local trouble makers (cops, gangs, thugs, drunks, nosy homeless, addicts, possibly hunters, maybe even shovelheads and creatures of the night).

Each night (Session) should have the Sheriff/Hound issue them a simple task through the assigned ghoul, typically in the style of a monster of the week type issue such as cleaning up a breach, misdirecting snoops like paranormal investigators, pointing hunters at a big bad, catching a poacher in unauthorized feeding or participating in a turf war with the Sabbat/Anarchs. Failing to complete the task will result in owing a minor debt to major debt for cleaning up their mess, and bungling horribly will result in a major debt to life debt depending on how bad it was. However, these should be easy enough to resolve that it should only take up part of the night to do properly, leaving time for the coterie to scrounge for resources, make contacts and try to build themselves up.

Finishing this story will allow the players to form a true coterie and pick its type. They will lose the assigned ghoul and RV, and the Chronicle can evolve organically from this starting point based on the events they set in motion entering society.

Dominate Build

I would like advice on creating a character. I am a First Time Player, and I don't really understand the rules.

Backstory: Tech Bro, long term goal space exploration needed immortality so vampire was logical.

Character Concept: make enemies attack each other.

* Dominate is the skill i was thinking would make that work.** I was thinking of using Compel with the one word "betray" or the short phrase "attack your ally."

I am not even sure that is possible, someone pointed out Victim Agency. My first impression was them attacking a friend won't cause immediate serious harm/death to them. But I don't know the rules.

> Dominate... Victim Agency: You cannot command a victim to directly perform actions that cause immediate, serious harm or death to themselves.

What I came up with.

Clan:

* Ventrue. = has dominate, and I heard presence 4 gets you better dominate?

* considered losambre? but no presence?

Attributes:

* Str: 1, Dex 3, Sta 2 = Dump str. dex +athletics is your defense?

* Cha 2, Man 4, Com 2 = Manipulation main thing to pair with dominate

* Int 2, Wit 3, Res 3 = wit + awareness to not get ambushed?, resolve+intimidate so i can look at them?

Skills:

* Subterfuge 4 = getting them to thing their ally is going to betray them? should intimidate be 4?

* Intimidation 3 = i'm weak in combat so tell them to stop?

* Awareness 3 = avoid ambushes?

* Athletics 3 = dodge melee/ranged? is this a bad idea?

* Insight 2 = this has something to do with making sure my dominate commands are good?

* persuasion 2 = should i do leadership instead?

* stealth 2 = i always liked stealthy dudes

* etiquette 1, technology 1, leadership 1 = should i replace one with investigation? i think these are just RP skills that will fail lots?

Skill Specialty: ??? I'm lost on this one do i just make up the expertise?

* Awareness: notice things out of the ordinary vs ambushes??

Generation: 13th gen neonate?

Predator Type:

* Scene Queen.

* prey exclusion (smart people like Scientists/Researchers/Engineers?) i'm not sure what a scene is but I was thinking can't feed on smart people because i might kill them and that would hamper long term goal?

*or maybe i choose disliked by environmentalists or something?

* Chose Leadership?? i'm lost here tbh

* bonus discipline dominate to make it more likely to stick?

Clan Disciplines

Dominate

* compel = betray your ally? this should work right?

* mesmerize = same thing?

* submerged directive = attack your boss later etc?

Presence

* Daunt instead of awe? because i have a higher intimidate? everyone says awe is best

Merits & Flaws

* Resources 5 = it says i can afford anything money can buy?

* not sure what to pick I am hesitant to choose retainer because can't they just be killed, then ive thrown away those points? also can't i just buy a retainer with unlimited money from resources?

* allies 1

* herd 1 ?

* infamy 2 people don't like the app i created?

Does this even work? o rshould I do something else?

Lasombra, Technology User?

Looking for some advice on a second draft for my character. I got roasted over the coals for my first draft. I will link it at the bottom if you are interested.

Concern 1: I wanted to get Arms of Ahriman, but you need potence 2. but I want him to have compel and tell enemies to "betray" or "attack an ally." Should I go potence lethal body or Oblivion Shadow Cloak? I want to go shadow cloak, because I don't see why potence is good at all? but i need to take it to get arms.

Concern: flaw: Enemies 2, do i have to create these or what do i do for this?

CORE CONCEPT: Kaleb Oz, a tech bro from Cali. Dirt poor growing up, he managed to leverage his people skills and expertise in tech to build himself up. In life he was the in charge of a tech company that is reaching towards the development of AI.

CLAN: LASOMBRA. SIRE IARA. Seeing that the camarilla is so technophobic, she created a valuable defense against the Second Inquisition.

TOUCHSTONES // written with ai

Ilya Sutskever - — Childhood friend, now a community organizer in his old hometown

Watched a young, broke Kaleb sleep in his car between coding gigs, and never once treated him like a charity case. Now she runs after-school STEM programs in the same neighborhood he escaped, funded quietly — and anonymously — by his money. She has no idea the donor is the boy she used to feed dinner to.

	As long as she's safe and that program survives, some part of the kid who clawed his way up still exists.

Geoffrey Hinton - Lead AI Researcher & Protégée

A brilliant but socially awkward neuroscientist in his late 20s. Kaleb personally recruited and fast-tracked him. He sees him as a visionary mentor who believed in her when no one else would. He’s deeply immersed in the company’s secretive AI projects.

	Touchstone Tie: Knowledge is Power. Lena embodies Kaleb’s drive for cutting-edge knowledge and technological dominance. Her breakthroughs and dependence on his guidance reinforce that true power comes from controlling information and innovation — and that he must stay ahead or risk being surpassed.

Harry Dresden - His old startup co-founder, now CEO of a rival firm

	The one person who beat him to market, once, a decade ago. Kaleb had overextended and that loss was almost his downfall. They're polite in public, vicious in private, locked in a permanent one-upmanship over whose company innovates faster. Kaleb blames Harry, but deep down he knows it isn't his fault. Harry is the mirror that keeps him sharp — the proof that someone is always coming for the throne.

		Conviction tie: Be first, or be forgotten. As long as Dev is out there building, racing, threatening to outpace him, Kaleb has a reason to keep innovating instead of settling into the comfortable stagnation so many older Kindred fall into. If Dev fades into irrelevance, so might Kaleb's drive.

AMBITION

be the first to create an Artificial Intelligence Singularity, and have it be bound to him.

DESIRE

investigate his missing cargo containers full of company servers that have gone missing

SEA OF TIME

13th Gen. // I have no idea about this tbh.

if you got here thanks for reading! I welcome any advice

Does anyone know what happened to that guy on TikTok who made the Book of Nod posts?

A few months ago an account I liked where a guy would read from The Book of Nod in a cool voice with this lullaby like music and little clips visualizing what was going on. Now I can’t find his posts anymore.

I think he did narrations of other stuff too like the bible?
