VSU VetMed Retention Policy

Don’t go to Visayas State University VetMed if you’re not prepared for the possibility that one setback could cost you more than just your place in the program.

Getting dismissed doesn’t only mean leaving veterinary medicine. It can also make it significantly harder to transfer to another school because many universities won’t accept applicants with failed grades, even if they’re applying for a completely different course. In other words, one academic setback can end up affecting your options far beyond VetMed itself.

For students who have already spent four or five years in the program, the consequences are even heavier. Even though VSU has no tuition, those years were never “free.” They were paid for with time, transportation, boarding expenses, books, equipment, uniforms, missed opportunities, and countless sleepless nights. Those are investments you’ll never get back.

I understand why the retention policy exists, especially for first-year students who are still figuring out whether veterinary medicine is truly for them. But it’s much harder to accept when someone has already dedicated years of their life to the program, only to find that leaving VetMed may also mean many doors outside of VetMed are suddenly closed.

After investing years into the course, there are very few opportunities to start over somewhere else.

Not saying academic standards shouldn’t exist, but I do think there needs to be more pathways for students who’ve already invested years of their lives and are willing to start over in another program instead of having their entire academic future defined by one chapter.

Any tips from recent passers for passing the VLE?

Hi, docs!

I know this has been asked a lot in this subreddit already, but I thought I'd ask again since there may be recent passers who can share updated advice. I also think having another thread could help future VLE takers who come across it. 😊

I'm currently preparing for the VLE, and honestly, I'm starting to feel overwhelmed by the amount of material to cover. My review center has already started Embryology lectures, but I'm still trying to finish Gross Anatomy, so I can't help but feel like I'm already falling behind. If anyone else experienced this during review, I'd love to hear how you managed to catch up.

A few questions:

  • Are there topics that consistently appear on the exam?
  • Any last-minute tips you wish you had known before taking the VLE?
  • How did you handle anxiety during the review period and on exam day?
  • Did you use other reviewers or was it enough to rely on the review center handouts?

Thank you so much, docs!

BSU Veterinary Medicine entrance exam

Hello, is there any DVM student here?

I'm planning on applying sa Baguio State University next year for vetmed but I don't know where to start. I don't know what I should focus on for the entrance exam other than the maths and biology, and the fact that there's only 100 slots available is kind of pressuring and scary. Any tips? Is the exam really hard? I know I'm ready for a challenge, just need a little help â˜čâ˜č

[UPLB] Son wants to be a veterinarian

Hi! My son (who's currently only in Grade 8 😅) thinks
he wants to be a vet. Since mahaba at mahal ang college, I'm trying to prepare as early as now.

I’m hoping to hear from current vetmed students or recent graduates.

  1. What are the biggest things my son (and I as a parent) should start preparing for now? Or take into consideration—academically? Financially? Mentally or emotionally?
  2. How much Filipino proficiency is expected?
Part siya ng generation na mas comforable magEnglish, pero kaya naman niya magconverse in Filipino, depende sa kausap niya. Will this be a disadvantage tor the UPCAT? I never took the UPCAT myselt, so l honestly don't know what to expect. But I've heard may mga parts na in Filipino na mahirap.
  3. Roughly how much do you spend per month (including for food and accommodation)? Or ano yung biggest expenses ninyo?
  4. How is the career outlook for veterinarians in the Philippines? Would you still recommend the profession today? Are there enough opportunities and is the compensation enough to build a comfortable life?
  5. Looking back, what do you wish someone had told you betore entering VetMed?
  6. Since he's just in 8th grade, what subjects or extracurricular activities do you think have helped you the most looking back? Or may mga dapat ba ko pakita or ipa-alam sakanya to help him with his decision?

Any other advice for a parent trying to support a future vetmed student would also be greatly appreciated.

Thank you! đŸ™đŸ»

Mag-take ng VLE or mag-work nalang? Huhu 😭

Fresh graduate here, and nagdadalawang-isip talaga ako kung itutuloy ko ba mag-take ng VLE this year.

Anyway, may tumatanggap ba ng fresh graduates sa veterinary clinics or any veterinary-related field? Kahit as a veterinary assistant muna, para makapag-gain ng experience while I figure things out. Huhu.
