Is the American violin market booming?

I’m shopping for a new violin and found one I liked from an American maker from the early 30’s. I can’t find any pricing comps online from the past 10 years but a bunch were sold via auction at Tarisio for the $1-2K range about 12-15 years ago. This one is being sold for $8K. The dealer is also an appraiser, and he told me that the market for American violins has boomed in the last year, and then when you buy from a dealer you typically pay 2x for the service, retail markup, etc. I’m wondering if there are any specific other luthiers or appraisers here who could speak to this? I’m not against paying the fair market price but I have no way to know if this is it. TIA!

My great-great-grandfather made this violin

I’m hoping to learn more about this violin that’s been in my family for generations.
It was made by my great-great-grandfather, Lewis Lallathin (1879–1963), in southeastern Ohio. Family history says he built it using a tea kettle.
I’m curious if anyone here can tell me anything about the instrument, whether anything about its construction or craftsmanship stands out, what kind of tradition or style it may have come from, and whether it looks like something that could realistically be restored into a playable instrument or if it would be better preserved as a family heirloom. I’d appreciate any observations or insights you have!

Violin Piece Recommendations

Hi guys, I have been playing the violin for about 3-4 years now, and the last classical piece that I played was Bach partita no:2 gigue.(not in the original speed though, I can’t play that fast yet)I was wondering if the experienced violinists here would have any suggestions for what pieces I might be able to play. I like classical pieces more but I’m Im open to any recommendations.
Thanks in advance!

Looking for a 3/4 violin in Monterey area (for visiting student)

Hi everyone! We’re visiting from Europe and I’m a ViolinMom hoping to help my daughter keep practicing while we’re in the U.S. She plays a 3/4 violin, and we’re looking for an affordable used instrument, or possibly someone who might be willing to pass one along.

If anyone has any leads or knows a kind connection in Monterey and the surrounding area, we’d be truly grateful. We can also stop by in person if that helps, and my daughter would be happy to play something.

Thanks so much for your time and kindness!
