Do we think Wonder Man will be referenced in 'VisionQuest'?

In the comics, The Vision's reconstruction is in part based upon Simon Williams, AKA Wonder Man! Do you think this will be referenced at all in VisionQuest or do we think this connection has been removed for the MCU?

West Coast Avengers becomes Avengers West Coast??

Something unusual happened after West Coast Avengers #47. The next issue was Avengers West Coast #48.

The name change was to try to build a better brand identity for all three Avengers titles at the time. There was the thinking that having them all start with "Avengers..." it would ensure they were racked together at comic stores. The branding even extended to their logos with each series having the same "Avengers" logo but with some variations.

  • Avengers ... stayed the Avengers
  • West Coast Avengers became Avengers West Coast
  • Solo Avengers became Avengers Spotlight

And there's some trivia for you today!

Maybe in Wonder Man Season 2's place, we get a West Coast Avengers movie or series led by Simon Williams. And it's a metacommentary on cancellation, adding MCU characters from canceled projects like Bobbi Morse Mockingbird and Hellcat to the team

West Coast Avengers #45 was an homage to the first appearance of Vision (Avengers #57)

This wasn't the only time John Byrne did an homage cover during his time with WCA.

EDIT TO ADD:

u/taoistchainsaw pointed out that the original Avengers cover is ALSO an homage; to the Vision created by Simon and Kirby: https://www.reddit.com/r/WestCoastAvengers/comments/1vpkgma/comment/p3z912o/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

USAgent Action Figures

Alrighty! I am blessed to own all of John Walker’s action figures, so lemme share em.

I’ll do my best to list them, I got a lot of these second hand because they aren’t sold anymore, so some did not come with boxes but I have a pretty good idea of what each one is.

Up front we’ve got all the MCU Marvel Legend John’s, Thunderbolts U.S. Agent, TFatWS Captain America, and TFatWS U.S. Agent.

Back left is the classic comic U.S. Agent Marvel Legends, next to that the newest addition that came out this month of ForceWorks U.S. Agent Marvel Legends, and beside that another classic U.S. Agent Marvel Legends “Epic Heroes.” (This one has an omega flight / civil war era shield)

Infront of new ForceWorks John, we’ve got the old ForceWorks Marvel Comics Iron Man U.S. Agent figure! A bit more juvenile as opposed to the new release, but just as cool. And in front of classic comic John Marvel Legend, we’ve got another classic U.S. Agent suited one, created for the release of Captain America The First Avenger. Though we see he’s in the regular U.S. Agent fit, he actually has a shield close to what he has during his 2001 U.S. Agent run and the three issue Maximum Security run.

And then off the right, in the front, we’ve got the Marvel Superheros U.S. Agent with the Shield Launcher! (Freaking epic) and the little U.S. Agent Kenner Marvel Legends figure!

Don’t ask if I have favorites, they can hear me.

Force Works Friday*: FW Cameo in War Machine (1994) #4

*I know this is being posted on a Saturday, not a Friday. I was on vacation and forgot.

It's not much of a cameo, admittedly. The Force Works crew react to media coverage of War Machine's actions in the country of Imaya.

Destined to become one of the most provocative, exciting, talked-about new characters of the year! Wait till you see him!! - Avengers #9

>The mighty Avengers face the coming of Wonder Man! Destined to become one of the most provocative, exciting, talked-about new characters of all! Wait till you see him! Sensationally written by Stan Lee and superbly illustrated by Don Heck!

-Marvel Unlimited

You read more about this issue, including copious continuity notes on Marvel Database.

Wonder Man would die and begin a long cycle of death and rebirth. He would go on to serve on the Avengers, become best friends with the Beast, help found the West Coast Avengers, sacrifice his life in Force Works #1, return again thanks to Kurt Busiek. And far more!

Over his 62 years, Simon continues to grow and change.

Future West Coast Avenger Firebird first appeared 45 years ago today in Incredible Hulk #265

Firebird was Marvel's first Latina super-hero!

In her debut appearance, she joins with four other heroes (Night/Phantom Rider, Red Wolf, Shooting Star, and Texas Twister) to found the Rangers. Their origin is a parallel to the founding of the Avengers with the different heroes being alerted to a danger presented by the Hulk - largely thanks to the Teen Brigade. The Corrupter had seized control of the Hulk and was ... doing things. I dunno. It's Bill Mantlo, there's always a lot going on.

She's bounced between the Avengers and Rangers a few times over the years. She's learned a lot more about her powers since she first appeared.

Firebird discusses the folly of Atlantis Attacks (West Coast Avengers Annual #4)

This is one of my favourite Firebird stories. It's a backup feature titled, "...So What Are You Going to Do After You Conquer the World?"

I think it might have been the first time I met her. Fabian Nicieza does a nice job of ensuring she's seen as compentent but also compassionate.

The art is pretty good. I do think there could have been more leaning into the idea that soldiers aren't the ones who benefit from war.

One odd thing: the soldiers are referred to as Lemurian (who are green) but depicted as Atlanteans (who are blue).

How does everyone speak English? It's comics, we'll waive that one.

Behold... the Vision! (Avengers #57, released August 8, 1968)

It's been 58 years since the first appearance of the Vision!

And what a first appearance he has, dominating the cover and having several of the firs few pages devoted to tell the story from his perspective.

Interestingly, he was first identified as a synthozoid before the 'o' was dropped and it was changed to synthezoid.

Oort the Living Comet ☄️ (Avengers West Coast #61)

"Who's Oort?"

Well, if you haven't heard of him yet, that makes a lot of sense. He has only appeared in one issue (Avengers West Coast #61). Oort was a member of Immortus' Legion of Unliving, and claimed to be a foe of Quicksilver's from the 50th Century. He exploited Pietro's concern for Wanda to shoot him in the back.

I thought it was a fun and random introduction of a character. It makes sense that a time traveler would recruit villains heroes haven't faced before. It was a fairly effective tactic as Quicksilver was one of the only Avengers to lose their match-up.

Hawkeye: Earth's Mightiest Marksman #1 (August 5, 1998) - Guest-starring Firestar and Justice

>Hawkeye is one of Earth's Mightiest Heroes, an upstanding member of the Avengers. Can he stop the villainy of Taskmaster all by himself?

-Marvel Unlimited

This is a three-part story.

This is an extra-sized issue at ~38 pages. The story itself is divided into three chapters with each chapter written by Tom DeFaclo with different artists. The first chapter is Jeff Johnson - who I recognize from Wonder Man. Next is Dave Ross who did a fairly long stint on Avengers West Coast with Hawkeye. Then Mark Bagley who helped develop Firestar and Justice in New Warriors and would pencil Hawkey in Thunderbolts.

This issue included a two-page intro spread to get readers up-to-speed and gave little bios to characters.

For some reason the Marvel Unlimited version doesn't have the original cover. Does anyone know why? They have some covers from previous Hawkeye series/stories as a bonus feature online.

I remember reading this but I didn't find it very memorable. It was okay for a one-shot. What did you think if you read it?

The Living Lightning, Miguel Santos, first appeared on August 7, 1990 in Avengers West Coast #63

Nowadays, he's Lightning. But when he first appeared, he was The Living Lightning!

Miguel's changed significantly since he first appeared in 1990. In the issue, we see him gain his powers and go on a rampage. We'll blame the transformation process for affecting him.

While he's seemingly destroyed at the end of the issue, the door is left open for him to return. Which he will in #70 as an agent of Doctor Demonicus. He'll turn on the Pacific Overlords and even be nominated as an Avenger by Janet van Dyne!

Avengers West Coast #75 (featuring the Fantastic Four!)

A giant-sized story!

The Fantastic Four are visiting the West Coast and thanks to some connections, they visit a brand new amusement park with the Avengers West Coast. This is a chance for Franklin Richards and Rachel Carpenter to have some fun! Sad that Rachel's mom dropped her off and couldn't join them... or could she!? The issue ends with Julia revealing her identity to Rachel which significantly changes their dynamic in the book.

There's a lot going on in this story but it basically boils down to heroes being used as pawns by Arkon and Thundra in a battle. Which ends up in the two smooching! The battle ends when Franklin is able to help Sue break the hypnosis.

Fighting for Arkon (hypnotized)

  • Scarlet Witch
  • Wonder Man
  • Iron Man
  • Invisible Woman
  • Human Torch

Fighting for Thundra (blackmailed):

  • Living Lightning
  • Spider-Woman
  • Mister Fantastic
  • Thing
  • Hawkeye

USAgent got left behind on Earth as a guard. Or they just needed an even number of characters for the face-off.
