It’s to the point now where I’ll only drive during very specific hours of the day. The climate in the winter is terrific but this is the part of Florida nobody tells you about when you move here. Or, at least, think you’re exaggerating about the driving experience. It’s really this bad.

Heat question

Hi, im from out of town so idk if this is considered normal. I have been in this rental for a little over 1 week and it has been HOT. I have the AC set to 68-69 at all times with fan and cooling on, but temps indoors are staying between 78-82. The lowest I have seen it was 76 when I woke up in the middle of the night.

Im doing all the things, blinds closed 24/7, ceiling fans on high, all doors closed except for when i come/go. I take very quick showers with the fan on, I barely use the stovetop and I keep the laundry room closed off when using the dryer. Truly anything I can think of to reduce heat accumulating and increase airflow and nothing has worked and its kinda miserable living here. Ill start sweating if i even think about sleeping under the sheet haha. My only relief is going to work where I do have AC but I feel horrible for my pet who is stuck at home until I can take her for a car ride for some AC time.

All this to say, is this normal for the area?? My LL is saying yes so need to know how hard I should be pushing the concern. Ive been in northern florida for the past two months and temps are just as hot there but my AC has always worked fine. But im from up north so maybe its just me

The snowbirds on okeechobee are going to actually make me lose my mind

started my commute today and literally got stuck behind three different out of state plates going 35 in a 45. I swear the season starts earlier every single year. Between the winter traffic and the completely unhinged insurance hikes down here, trying to live anywhere near downtown is just getting miserable.

We finally just gave up and decided to move further out towards wellington to get away from the congestion. didn't want to actually sell the condo though since our rate is from 2021. Ended up just handing it over to property management purely so I never have to speak to our crazy HOA president ever again.

But seriously is anyone else feeling like the city is just physically bursting at the seams? like you cant even find parking near clematis on a random wednesday anymore. its just exhausting man.

Carpolling

Weekday Carpool: West Palm Beach ↔ Miami

Hi everyone! My mom is looking for a weekday carpool from West Palm Beach to Miami, Monday through Friday.

She would need to leave West Palm Beach around 5–6 AM and return to West Palm Beach around 6–7 PM.

If anyone makes this commute regularly and is interested in carpooling, please DM me and we can discuss the details, including the exact location, timing, and contribution toward gas.

Thank you!

M4f was bored and I came up with something: I want people who actually want to do it

Create a group where we play truth or dare, but I'd like to start with about 5 people to see how it works and keep adding more. I don't know, that's my idea.

What's with all of the abandoned sailboats?

Counted a total of 5 partially sunk boats on the WPB side of the intercoastal this morning. Why are folks just abandoning boats and why doesn't the county salvage the wreckage?

Rattlesnakes at Okeeheelee Park

PSA: I've seen Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnakes at Okeeheelee Park (the side South of Forest Hill Blvd) twice now

Also see lots of people walking their dogs on retractable leashes and letting them wander off trail. Be careful!

Looking for an ophthalmologist - moved from another state

Hello,

I moved from another state, and need to find an ophthalmologist here.

I need an ophthalmologist specialized in glaucoma.

Also, I am hoping to find a doctor who can also prescribe contact lenses. I used to go to both ophthalmologist for annual checkup and optometrist for my contact lenses prescription, but if possible, I would like to find someone who can do both at the same office.

For location, I would like someone close to downtown West Palm Beach or Boca Raton area.

Many thanks in advance for your advice.

Short Story Club

Hi, all!

I am starting a group called Short Story Club, for people who enjoy writing and sharing their writing with others. This is not a formal critique group--it's just a casual way to creatively have fun and meet other people, hear others' stories, etc. Think Book Club meets The Moth.

The club will meet once a month in a public place. We'll have a prompt each month and everyone will interpret the prompt however they wish--part of the fun is seeing how are our minds lead us in wildly different directions.

I recently moved to the area from NYC and am looking to find new friends who share my interests. I currently work in commercial trade publishing (Ie., Penguin Random House, Simon&Schuster, etc) and up north I led a book club for almost a decade before I moved here. I also feel inspired to start the club to encourage and promote original, human-generated writing in an age where AI is increasingly being used.

If you are interested in joining, please PM me for more details. Thanks!

Any good tailors in the area I need to fix my denim jacket.

Help need to find a reliable and good tailor to make some alterations to my denim jacket for men. I don’t want to go to a random one and they mess up and have to deal with it. Thank you

Kindly

Got sideswiped on I-95 near West Palm and the driver took off

Was driving on I-95 near West Palm Beach earlier this week when someone came into my lane and clipped the side of my car pretty hard. I managed to pull over, but they just kept going. I only caught part of the plate and a rough description of the car.

Police came out and I made a report. I thought I was okay that night, but my back has been pretty sore since and I have an appointment to get it checked out. I've never dealt with a hit and run before. Has anyone around Palm Beach County been through something similar?

Where can I find a canelé?

I just had one for the first time at a French bakery out of state and surely we have a cafe that serves them here or nearby? Where's it at?

Cyclops parasite?

Hi! Is anyone paying attention to the Cyclospora parasite outbreak that’s mostly attached to raw greens? My understanding is that there are hardly any outbreaks in Florida, but it’s still going on. I did not stop eating leafy greens until about a week ago, when friends convinced me too. Just wondering what everyone thinks of the prevalence here, etc…..?

We need more trash cans!

How do we go about getting more trash cans on Dixie?! The business don’t have them and they are not even at bus stops which is the odd part to me. With Dixie being so walkable now, I feel like it is a must!
