Big NYC weekend event list: July 3–6, sorted by borough

I pulled together a borough-by-borough list of public events for the long weekend. There are a lot of permitted events on the calendar, so I tried to keep this useful: day first, then borough, then time/location.

A couple of heads-up items before the list:

• Saturday morning: expect harbor activity connected to the International Naval Review / Sail4th 250 events. If you’re near the waterfront in Lower Manhattan, Brooklyn, or Staten Island, don’t be surprised by loud ceremonial activity from the harbor. Check Sail4th 250 for the exact schedule.

• Friday afternoon: expect major congestion around Madison Square Garden / Penn Station. Reported closures and access changes are in the 30s around 7th/8th Ave. If you’re using Penn or Moynihan, check your route before heading over.

This is not meant to be every single thing happening in NYC — just a useful scan of public events, markets, parks programming, parades, fireworks, block parties, and things that may affect crowds or travel.

Any NYC home cooks who've ever wanted to cook for strangers? I'm building a club for exactly that! Like an Open Mic, but for Chefs!

I'm building a dinner series in NYC called SoGood Co. and I'm looking for home cooks and chefs who want to cook for strangers! I've always wanted to bring my family recipes and cultural dishes to the world but investing in a pop-up or restaurant was too much. I couldn't find any outlet for it...sooo I'm doing it myself :)

The format is simple: four chefs, each owning one dish and the story behind it, served to a group of paying guests. We handle the venue and guests. You show up as the chef. DM for more info!

Edit: If you'd like to be a guest, please DM as well!

Free Comedy Tonight in a Halsey J Speakeasy Cellar Anthony DeVito headlines with Sienna Hubert Ross and Sarah Barnitt

These shows aren't free because they're bad. The first 3 comics below are paid to do comedy at places like the Comedy Cellar and the Stand and Sienna has has 500k followers on Instagram alone. They're free because I'm spreading the word about Bibblebash as a DIY Bushwick space to do free cool things sometimes - mostly comedy like this Tuesday show and the Friday night open mics or themed roasts (Star Wars roasted 10pm this Friday). I'm also open to art shows, maybe small jazz shows and poetry readings. Check it out?

Things happening in NYC this week (June 22-28): Wimbledon in Central Park, a week-long anti-tech festival, drag bingo for transit nerds, and more

I spend an unreasonable amount of time digging through event calendars, so here are some of the more interesting things I found happening around NYC this week. A few highlights:

  • Wimbledon is building an actual grass tennis court in Central Park and letting people enter a lottery to play on it.
  • A week-long "Summer of Ludd" festival is taking over the city with anti-tech talks, mass poetry readings, communal lunches, sewing workshops, and an event called Stevie Wonder vs. The Nazis.
  • Riders Alliance (the transit advocacy nonprofit) is hosting drag bingo in Astoria, including a presentation ranking subway lines on the Kinsey scale.
  • A Pride-themed astronomy night in Downtown Brooklyn with science talks, trivia, and drinks.
  • A walking tour covering 160 years of LGBTQ history on the Upper West Side.
  • A giant vintage/fashion market in Greenpoint with 50 vendors and a rooftop.
  • A cocktail-making class at PDT focused on bourbon.
  • A PowerPoint-style "Pitch a Friend" night where people present their single friends to a room full of strangers.

I put together a full list with ~20 events here: https://cityhappenings.substack.com/p/things-to-do-in-nyc-this-week-june-e4e

What's the best thing you're looking forward to this week?

The reality of our streets: How data catches what the official statements leave out

It’s always a little eerie when you hear a fleet of sirens tearing down an avenue in the middle of the night, only to wake up the next morning to zero context on the news. But sometimes, when you look at the raw block-by-block data, you find the exact reality of how our street grid operates.

Case in point from the local headlines today: Cops and EMS responded to an incident late Friday night up on Amsterdam Avenue in Hamilton Heights. A 32-year-old cyclist was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver in a Dodge Durango.

When the official NYPD communications department put out their report about the crash, they left out a massive detail. But when you actually cross-reference the local media images and the live street conditions from that night, the truth comes out: the cyclist didn't just randomly lose control. They were forced to swerve because a minivan was parked completely illegally, entirely blocking the unprotected bike lane.

This is exactly why relying on standard neighborhood gossip apps or heavily edited default city feeds just doesn't cut it anymore. Half the time, the real context is buried under layers of lag or missed entirely.

If you are tired of trying to guess what’s actually happening on your street grid or along your daily commute route, look up an app called NYC Intel.

It’s a clean, native map utility that streams live 311 logs, active precinct data, and real-time block-level alerts without the toxic comment sections or panic-inducing rumors of other apps. The "My Block" feature lets you save your exact street or work grid so you can see a direct snapshot of active conditions before you even walk out the door.

For anyone who wants a clearer view of the grid:
