ISO: Your Fave Instrumental Albums

Hi! I’m a high school teacher and the only music I allow students to listen to during class time is world music without lyrics. I’m looking for some albums I can play for them throughout the school year. Normally I find songs or music compilations on YouTube but i’m wary of AI generated music.

thanks in advance!

Edited to add: I teach special education biology and astronomy. My students are mostly 14/15 and 17/18. I usually play a lot of Chinese and Japanese music, as well as a lot of music from the caribbean! It doesn’t have to be super relaxing, I like to play a mix of relaxing and upbeat (otherwise they fall asleep).

Music from My Autistic Universe – Eurythmics (Annie Lennox & Dave Stewart) – 'Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)' – Part 1

This 7-part series explores 'Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)' beyond a basic song analysis (P2: Music, P3: Lyrics, P4: Mythology, P5: Psychology, P6: Sound, P7: Reception & Covers).

Following the commercial failure of their 1981 debut album In the Garden with Eurythmics, Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart faced immense pressure in 1982. Driven by raw energy and psychological archetypes, they produced a synth-pop track far more vital than the work of their contemporaries.

– Carol S. Pearson

[USA] Chet Baker – 'Summertime' (Live, NDR-Bigband, Rundfunk Orchester Hannover des NDR)

.

The recording originated on April 28, 1988, at the Funkhaus Hannover with Chet Baker (trumpet).

For this live concert, Baker was accompanied by numerous musicians: Walter Norris (piano), John Schroder (guitar), Herb Geller (alto saxophone), Lucas Lindholm (double bass), Aage Tanggaard (drums), the NDR-Bigband and the Rundfunk Orchester Hannover des NDR.

Kurt Giese – editor, producer and recording supervisor of the NDR Big Band – wrote after the concert about the recording of Hannover released by Matthias Winckelmann on Enja Records:

« Chet Baker's last great concert appears like the testament of a man whom the gods must have loved very much. They gave him so much talent, and punished him so severely with his life. »

Two weeks after this concert – on May 13, 1988 – Chet Baker died in Amsterdam.

« 'Musik schafft Kontakt mit den tiefsten inneren Bildern und Themen' » – Timmermann

Akal-nneɣ yeqqim — Pure Acoustic Tuareg Desert Blues. Arranged strictly with 4 nylon-string guitars, a calabash, and Tamasheq chants. No synths. 🏜️

Azul everyone,

I’m an independent producer working under the project 'CyberSidq', heavily inspired by the deep Tishoumaren and Assouf movements of the Sahara (like Tinariwen, Imarhan, and Bombino).

With this specific track, "Akal-nneɣ yeqqim" (Our Land Remains), I wanted to strip away all modern electronic production. There are no drum kits, no synths, and no electronic beats. I focused entirely on a strict pentatonic dialogue between 4 nylon-string guitars, anchored only by the deep, hollow pulse of a traditional Calabash.

The goal was to capture the raw, wandering, trance-like state of a lonely night in the Ténéré desert.

I would love to hear feedback from this community, especially from those who appreciate acoustic world music. Does the strict acoustic arrangement translate that 'vast desert' feeling effectively?

Tanemmirt (Thank you)!

Where can I buy Balinese Gamelan instruments?

Specifically interested in the instruments used in the Gamelan Gong Kebyar style tuned in the Pelog Selisir scale.

I'm a musician who plays keys and xylophone and I've been getting into Balinese Gamelan music pretty hard. I'm looking for Jegogans, Gangsa Pemades and Gangsa Kantilans, and a Curings

Is there any way to source these instruments? I'm coming up short in my searches. I'll fly to Indonesia if I have to and ship them back.

If you are unfamiliar with this type of music. Here is a link. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GsPdTNGnr44

[India/UK] Anoushka Shankar & Norah Jones - Traces of You

Traces of you
linger like a tear drop
Fresh upon the air
My heart sings for you
Play me like a rain cloud
Sounds upon the air
