I’ve got this 1989 xr600r. I just can’t get it to start sometimes and there doesn’t seem to be any correlation to anything. I have the manual and set it to the tune the book suggested.
Main problem: bike will start first kick some days but no chance others. Once it’s warm it’s first kick. The biggest issue it seems to have is getting enough air to the carb. Brand new twin air filter not oiled, maxima oil, 10w-40 oil, no filter. None of it affects startup to make it easier.
Currently set at 2nd clip position, 150 main and 62 just put in 68 pilot to see if it helps (made no difference) and 10w-40 oil. Runs amazing but just won’t start. Ive had really good luck with 1st clip position from top, 130 main and 68 pilot with maxima oil on the filter. It just seems like it wasn’t getting enough air for that.
I’m at 4,600 feet elevation but often ride up too 6000. Overall just looking to have a reliable starting bike no matter the cost, modifications, or power. The bike was last registered in 97 so the motor is in great shape. All valves are in spec, great compression, but I can’t seem to see any spark even in pitch black garage. But it starts and runs great. Sometimes…
Added the JNS headlight, front fender brace and battery. Warp 9 subframe bracing kit didn't fit with my aftermarket exhaust. The Flatline Racing skidplate I have doesn't line up right and is way too big, went with an Acrebis. I bought the rear tail light and license plate frame but honestly the stock one grew on me and I think I'm keeping it.
55/160 jets. A little rich off idle, think I'ma go 52 pilot, but it's super hot too, so we'll keep it for now and see if it improves in cooler weather.
Happy 4th of July everyone! Morning rip up to Santiago Peak.
I have a Toyota Tundra and was thinking of getting a hitch carrier. I mainly ride alone and loading in the bed of a truck I need to backup to a hill to use momentum to get it up the ramp. One of my concerns is if I breakdown and there’s no hill around I can’t get it loaded, and my thinking is a hitch carrier would be a much easier way to load. The bike being around 350lbs and the tongue weight on most class 3 hitches is 500 pounds rating, most hitch carrier’s sit back twice as far so doing the math tongue rate would be 250lbs. If you combine the bike and the carrier isn’t the hitch being overloaded? For those of you that use one which make and model do you recommend, aluminum or steel, and how’s your experience with the receiver hitch carrier?
I have an 04 xr with 14000 and I noticed the other day that while the engine is at operating temperature this is a prominent clacking/knocking noise while at medium load. It usually happens when I am in 3rd through 5th gear on the throttle.
I initially thought it was cam chain tensioner related so I took off the valve cover to inspect and have not found anything particularly concerning. The auto decompression components look fine valve lash, while not perfect, was not too crazy. The cam itself has no nicks, dents or grooving. I did drain the oil and found a slight gray sparkle to it but nothing big. I can pull the filter to post a photo of anything I find in there if that would be helpful.
I’m not super sure where to look next any ideas would be appreciated.
I did my Jets, deSmog, and Dave mod today, The bike will start for like 30 seconds, and then once it runs out of fuel, it dies. Confirmed it's getting fuel in the float because when I drain the carb, a bunch of fuel comes out. I used a aftermarket mixture screw, I think I screwed it down too tight and must have crushed the o-ring and then when I went to take it out it must have fell out. I searched inside with a flashlight and a pick and I didn't see anything inside of there but it kind of looks like it's stuck inside if you look at the picture. I tried getting an o-ring set from harbor freight but they are too big.
I need one ASAP
It is possible to patch the stator case after impact from shifter without removing the case.
Took off the right crankcase cover during an oil change to do the screen, found this in my oil drain pan after putting everything back together and filling with oil.
Does anyone know what this is for? Or if it's even a part to this bike? Looks almost the exact size of a chain roller, possibly part of the oil pump or an alignment dowel?
Hey guys, I need your help, I need a 050 piston for the XR, but I've had problems with Pro-X oil rings gap being out of tolerance from the box (too wide). Have y'all found a simmilar problem? Do any of you know another brand that makes them in this size? Should I try a third time? Am I doing something wrong that I haven't tought about?
On my way to MSF class. Stopped at a store. Kick stand got hung up on my boot. 1st drop. 😤
The oil leak.
Hopefully just a line that came loose.
Made some progress on the XR today. I still gotta remove the carb this weekend and do the Jets/Dave Mod. Still waiting on some parts to arrive next week...Procycle Tail light and license plate frame, ROX handlebar risers, JNS front fender brace, and JNS headlight.
It wasn't a bad day in the garage tho. I got my FMF exhaust on, desmog kit done, Uni Air filter, snorkel delete, Fritzco 14T sprocket, and a couple other little things like pegs, JNS brake master cylinder guard, and the JNS kickstand footpad.
Still sitting on my bench waiting to be installed is a Flatline Racing skidplate (was waiting for the desmog kit), Tusk tank bag, some Barkbusters, a Warp 9 subframe bracing kit, ODI locking grips, and a Antigravity lithium battery. Going to try to finish it up by Tuesday.
Removed passenger footpegs, and with the new exhaust and battery I shaved so much weight off this pig.
Safety hazard or good to run these? Small cuts in the bead.
On my ride home from work today I heard a concerning knocking noise a few times while accelerating. I couldn’t catch that on video but when I got home I was getting this chattering sound that was not happening earlier. I have a temp gauge dip stick and it was reading 200f. I’m using t4 10w40 from mobil 1 and the oil looks good. Any thoughts? It’s a 2019 xr650l with 12k miles.
