Best possible MPG?

I know we should ride bikes for smiles per gallon not miles per gallon. BUT that said, I need to be practical because I'm not a man of means. It matters when gas is 4 per gallon if I'm using it as a daily to and from work and then on weekends in the mountains (hour away to get there then ride all day then home). Mostly pavement but some mild offroad.

So what's the best mpg I can expect with pretty gentle riding on an XR? I'm reading 40-50 is what to expect at best. Current bike gets 70, but would like something with more power.

Any easy mods to up the mpg on XRs? I know to lighten the bike up with a lithium battery and maybe change the gearing? What says reddit?

Fuel mixture screw

Just did Dave's mod on my bike, noticed my "fuel mixture screw" looked different then the guys on the video. This doesn't even seem adjustable. Is this just a blank or something? This is my first time working on a carb. My bikes a 2025 maybe they updated it?

Bought tires, forgot tubes

I was excited to get tires but just slipped my mind that I needed tubes as well.

I bought Pirelli MT21, 90/90-21 front and Dunlop D606 120/90-18 rear.

I wanted to try that combo as I’ve seen it’s been a solid choice and seems to fit my particular style of riding.

Now I’m going down the rabbit hole of tubes, and I’m certainly making it a bigger deal than it is, I just want to make sure I’m setting myself up for success.

Any suggestions on brands, heavy duty vs. ultra heavy duty? I’m open to any feedback you can provide, just trying to be more educated on the topic.

For this particular tire change I’ll be having my local bike shop do the swap as I don’t have the tools or confidence yet to tackle the project myself. And with that being said I’d like to make sure I’m providing them with all the parts they’ll need to do the job.

SHORT VERSION
suggestions on tubes and any other parts that need to be included when changing tires? Thanks for your time.

What else should I put in my tool kit?

I'm going on a big cross country trip and I'm trying to make this pretty comprehensive.

3500ft Jetting

Been loving this bike around Central Oregon! Picked it up for a grand from my cousin. Still trying to dial in the jetting for this area. I think I need to go a bit leaner. Anyone ride around the 3500-4k elevation and end up with a 52/155? Typical mods already done, Dave's, exhaust, uni filter, snorkel deleted.

Is 4k a good deal?

First bike for me and my buddy says that 4k is too much but from what I’ve read it’s not totally unreasonable. Idk I’d like to hear some input from people who have the bikes.

Should’ve mentioned the bike has a little less than 8k miles, original owner, it’s 2001, it has new tires, breaks, tensioners, sliders, led hesflight, and clean carb and fresh oil.

16T front sprocket

Trying to make the highway experience a bit more bearable, as there's essentially no reasonable route available for me to get to dual sport rides if I want to leave from my house without trailering or tossing the bike in the pickup.

So I'm thinking about putting a 16T front sprocket on her, but I've heard that there are some clearance issues. Anyone have any experience or insight?

Would also be open to alternative ideas to lower RPMs on the highway. I don't care about how well the bike accelerates so much, I'm not squirreling around with it too much, I have a trail bike for that.

Thanks!

Anyone have one of these? Any thoughts?

Figured I'd get it for the wind on bigger trips when traveling highway speed

Skidplate and splash guards

Were the cheap? No. But were they easy? Also no. But do they look good? Definitely not😂

XRs Only

Anyone else have issues ordering from XRs Only? Have used them twice and each time it has taken over a month for them just to ship my items. I've had to repeatedly call them to get any sort of updates. Pretty annoying. Don't think I'll ever use them again.

Hope to actually join one day

Hello all, I know it’s ideal to be an owner on this sub but joined just to see your bikes and hope to own one one day. If any of you have suggestions on how to convince your spouse to buy a motorcycle I’m all ears. She’s under the impression I’d be going in the freeway and going fast but all I want it for is to cruise trails and the occasional backroad. Rode an old Honda to high school and it was a blast. Safe travels to you all.

Throttle shaft seal

How many people have had or know of throttle shaft seals turning into an air leak, thinking this is my issue but seems pretty uncommon.

Did the carb spray test and the choke side shaft seal raises idle, cant get bike to idle without the choke.

Upgraded my 2007 XR650L with a new front rally fairing

Actually an older Lynx fairing I bought used. The company that makes these is called Britannia Composites. The new ones they sell now are better and have 2 vertical lights and the retail price is about $799 last time I checked. I mainly wanted a windscreen but I wasn’t sure I wanted it all the time. This windscreen can be raised or lowered. Also on the backside I had room to mount a CarPlay unit which I prefer over singular purpose Garmin devices which I’ve used in the past and suck when it comes to mapping your route ahead of time.
Note: This is a 2007 model and yes, that is the correct mileage if you zoom in enough…367 miles on an almost 20 year old bike! It had only 69 miles on it when I bought it last summer…then took me a bit to get it running again (Clean up, swap and upgrade components, Dave’s mod, etc) and now have done only a few rides as I’m gaining confidence that the bike is trustworthy and will start again consistently. I also ride a BMW F800GS. Already ordered new tires as these are original. I’m going with the Tusk Waypoint tires.

Gas stations

I think I’ve pumped gas from a station twice In the first 1776 miles. What do yall get for mpg, or how do you estimate endurance?

Searching For Carb Rebuild Kit

I'm in need of a rebuild kit. There's a bunch i see online but they don't all include the same things. Also, the bike is desmogged and has an XR'S Only muffler. Should I stick to the stock jets or a different size? If I need a different size do these need to be purchased separately from the rebuild kit. Kind of lost. Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Oh I also live right around 1500 feet elevation and rarely if ever go above 5000 although I go up to about 4000 regularly. Thanks.
