Thoughts on a character description

Thoughts on a character description

Hello! I'm sharing one of the characters from my YA fantasy novel, Gurukul. This is Ruby, a 16-year-old disciple.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on her design and overall appearance.

I gave Ruby shorter, beaded hair because I wanted her to feel edgier and more rebellious than the other characters. She comes from Agni, the Fire Realm, and is known for her fierce personality.

Since Gurukul is set in a traditional Indian education system inspired by the Vedas, I designed her with Sanskrit mantra tattoos on her arms. She's dressed in the Gurukul school uniform—a white tunic and dhoti pants—with a red sash representing the Fire Realm, along with flame-shaped earrings to tie into her elemental identity.

I'd love any thoughts or suggestions on whether her design communicates her personality effectively. Thanks! (Just for context, this artwork won't be used in the book.)

My horror/fantasy vampire novel idea, any thoughts?

I have an idea I recently came up with, a story that follows a girl turned vampire throughout her entire life, starting when she is bitten, then going through generations of human lives, and what she experiences over that time, like love, loss, family, rejection, etc. I think it is a good concept but I haven't really fine tuned it at all. Any feedback would be appreciated, thanks!

Want to get into writing fiction, where should I start?

I (17F) want to get into writing, mainly horror, fantasy, and sci fi, but I have no idea where to start. I am about to start college, and most of my current writing projects are unfinished, although it is work that I am proud of. I was wondering 1. should I aim more for making money with this, or have another job as a main job, and 2. where is a place i can get my work published?

I write both short and long stories, so either kind is fine for me to do, I just do not know where to start. I am going to college for nursing next fall, and that is the other job i would do, should this not work out.

Thanks in advance!

Would you read my Gen-Z book based on this dialogue exchange?

Just a reminder: this is an early draft.

Otto comes to a stop under a streetlight and surveys the neighborhood. “You sure we’re going the right way?”

Armoni pivots mid-step to look back at Otto and smiles sheepishly. “Uhh... I think?”

“It’s a yes-or-no question!”

“No, I don’t—do YOU know where it is?”

“Mmhmm, just gimme oooone second.”

Otto slips his phone out of his pocket to look at the OurTown Map again. Armoni walks right up to Otto and leans in to see his screen.

“Oh, that’s not...”

“You had us going the wrong way, you stupid bitch!”

Armoni looks around in mock bewilderment as if a crowd is being addressed.

“Yeah, I’m talking to you!”

“No, no, you can’t be.”

“Oh, but I am.”

The streetlight above them buzzes like angry hornets. Otto and Armoni both snap their eyes upward.

“The hell?”

“Aaand that's our cue to leave. C’mon, let’s go.”

[Complete][90K][YA Fantasy] GURUKUL: THE FIFTH PATH

Genre: YA Fantasy / Indian Mythology

Nitin, an ostracized fourteen-year-old from Mathura, possesses the rare Akash Tattva—the elemental power of intuition—and can hear the voices of nature. Accused of causing a flood in mathura, Nitin is held in a juvenile detention center for mentally unstable boys. When Puru, a hundred-year-old Saptrishi reincarnated as an eleven-year-old boy, and Ruby, a disciple from the Realm of Agni, break in the center and escort him to Gurukul, in a hidden island where the five elements are trained as real powers, he discovers that the legends of India's ancient sages were never myths.

At Gurukul, Nitin finds friends, rivals, and fellow students gifted with elemental Tattvas. But as he struggles to master his own abilities, an ancient war begins to resurface.

To save his home, India's sacred rivers, and the world itself, Nitin must find the Kamalsakshi, an ancient key, before the Asura Army claims the Amrit, the nectar of immortality, and unleashes hell upon the world.

Standing in his way is Zorawar, the enigmatic leader of the Asura Army. Told through alternating first-person POVs, the novel follows both hero and villain as their paths race toward an inevitable confrontation.

The story blends Indian mythology, folklore, monsters, elemental magic, hidden worlds, and a richly imagined cultural landscape inspired by India's history and traditions.

Content Warnings: Violence, monsters, natural disasters, warfare

If you're interested, please leave a comment or DM me.

I'm also happy swapping similar genres. Thanks!

Wrote a YA horror story and not sure where to go from here!

Hi all.

I know this is probably going to be a vague post, but I'm honestly just happy to get as much general advice as possible.

I've written a story and I hope to see it published eventually. I'm probably going to go over it once more after I receive a couple people's feedback, then I'll have a final manuscript ready!

It started out as a horror idea that was bouncing around in my head, but then I realised it probably worked better as a YA novel and wrote it to fit that better. I think I've done a good job, but there is some violence still in it (nothing ultra descriptive or crass, but some acts of gory violence). I'm wondering if that will clash against the YA label?

Also, the final manuscript will probably end up at around 50k words. Would that even be something a literary agent would look at?

I've had different friends and family checking each manuscript version to help me along the way (I have a weird writing style that adds rather than removes with each draft!). There's only been some story feedback in terms of major stuff, nothing that I've not been able to address in new drafts. There's been plenty of good feedback too, especially for the unique premise.

I also have a bookstagram account with over 3k organic followers. I'm sure that would be helpful if I were to self-publish, but I would really prefer trad pub as I don't think I have the resources or time available to promote and market a self-published book. Would it help me find an agent at all?

Just looking for answers to some of these questions, and any other general bits of advice! Thanks in advance.

Potential writing a book

Hey guys, I wanna hear your thoughts on what I’ve been thinking about. I wanna start writing my own novel about high school or college drama, but I didn’t know if I want the acts to be like seasons, and the chapters to be like episodes. Is that allowed for writers to do or is it unrealistic? Let me know please. 😁

Should I release the prequel or the sequel first?

Im not really going to MAKE a book right now im just lining up everything so that when i make it its easily im just wondering after i finish the main series should i make

A.The Prequel where each episode is about a different ancestor that’s in the MCs Bloodline each one in a new century, timezone and era. With The first episode being about the first ancestor and the last episode Being about the wielder before the MCs Parents(the MCs parent storyline is too long)

B.The Prequel about The MCs parents(they were legends and died in a war and I want to put some romance in it so I’ll make the first season when they met and the 2nd season about the war)

C.The Prequel about the MC and how they became a legendary assassin before the main series

D.The Sequel about a whole new generation 300 yrs after the story with the MC being the past MCs Descendant ofc.

Anyone know which one I should pick?

Is this a good novel idea.

So I’ve been playing a solo d&d campaign and got to a good stopping point and I really like the story and wanted to right it. I always loved story telling, but this is my first time actually writing something, and especially since I want this to be my work without Ai. The problem I face rn at the beginning of my journey is if this is a good idea.

So the premise follows it’s a world where a calamity occurred decades ago that cause spirits, demons, and even gods to flow into the human world from the astral one. These spirts can then pick vessels and give them powers depending on how strong they were in life. At the same time the spirits can also wander the streets causing havoc or damage. That is why the government created a separate government organization split into 4 guilds to deal with these demons. But the first volume isn’t really about that yet, so this is just general info and relatively incomplete. The volume one starts with our mc who is severely bed ridden and hospitalized for years. Some terrorist attack happens and the mc gets powers granted from the Indian god shiva. Volume one is about him learning to use these powers and having to deal with a criminal empire who needs him for a certain purpose.

So the story is going to be a mix of supernatural powers and fights, romance between the wife showing she loves him and the mc learning to accept it, and underground crime syndicates who use there power for crime and ritualistic stuff.

So again to reiterate. I just want to know if this is a good idea, does it sound too basic, is it too cliche, and what could I improve if I need to improve anything. Thank you all for the support in starting my journey.
