Best hikes out of Yakima?

My teenager and I will be in Yakima mid June and have a day to find something to do. We were initially planning on heading to Rainier, but we've already been there before and are hoping to find something a bit closer and/or less committing.

ETA - have a car

F these gas prices

This morning gas was 5.19 at the Arco on 16 and Washington, I figured I'd stop by after work and put gas. It's now 5.25. nope. Nope. Nope. This is insane!! We agree this is crazy to witness right?

Best ISP in Yakima for area.

I live in between Lincoln and Summitview & between 40th and 16th. I recently moved to this neighborhood.

We took with us Verizon wireless internet and it really sucks here. In my prior neighborhood it was not particularly fast but it wasn't slow enough to cause problems. My understanding is that the they don't technically offer the service in this neighborhood but if it works whatever.

I like the business model of Advanced internet but I don't believe they get reception in this neighborhood either. For reference, their prices never go up because obviously the acceptable performance numbers go up over time and they guarantee bandwidth minimums not "up to x"... So they're pricing and output seems more than fair.

I'm guessing that the easy answer for performance is going to be spectrum but my wife really really really hates the company and how persistent they are with marketing after you have their service and how they often try to change your package after the fact, and raise prices on services that are now obsolete levels of performance after a few years.

What else is there? Give me your experience with the different alternatives please. I want to hear the good and the bad. As well as the cost per performance tier. We are not super power users we just want to be able to stream a couple of shows and have a couple of phones web browsing at the same time.

Best Pop Selection

Where is the best pop selection in Yakima, as far as like craft sodas go. So far the best I’ve found is that fruit stand that looks like a milk carton on 82 north of town. Sometimes farm/ranch stores have a decent collection, is that the case in Yakima? I tried Wrays and was disappointed. Thank you

Candidate Jerrod Sessler to speak at J6 town hall in Kenmore today. States he knows “what really happened” b/c he filmed from his hotel room a mile away

Why hasn’t he shared the video? Did he post this video to cover up any illegal activity that he participated in?

My thoughts on the Yakima Valley

I came here on a travel healthcare assignment, and read alllll the threads regarding Yakima and the surrounding area. So I figured I had better share my experience for others. I worked in Sunnyside, but lived in Yakima.

I honestly did not mind Yakima - HOWEVER, when I say Yakima, I think I really mean Union Gap... The Union Gap shopping area near Costco is safe and nice. The stores along S 1st street is a pretty good area too.

  • Hotels: The hotels I'd recommend area-wise would be the Holiday Inn Express Union Gap, Home2Suites, and Tru Yakima Airport. The only one I stayed in was actually into Selah, the Quality Inn Selah North Park - I liked the decor and it was a nice area.
  • Dog Care: I had two Rover dog walkers that were hands down the best dog walkers I have ever had before, in any of the places I have lived. Would recommend them to literally anyone and I would take them with me if I could. The Yakima Canine Club for doggy daycare was also great, but definitely on the pricier side.
  • Coffee Shops: My favorite was Outback Espresso. Their daily redbull specials were tasty, consistently good, and affordable. I also visited the High West on Summitview a few times, and it was good too, just out of the way.
  • Restaurants: Mel's Diner, Major's Burgers, Don Cheo's, Denny's Union Gap (I didn't eat out often, but I went to Mel's 2x, liked it both times. Don Cheo's I went like 5x, it was pretty good too. Nice big burritos). Not in Yakima, but I loved El Kiosko food truck for the drinks and esquites in Sunnyside - it isn't even on maps, but it is right by across the street from Ace Hardware).
  • Surrounding Areas: Sunnyside and Yakima are the same in different fonts, both felt sketchy to me. I was always careful in the main part of Yakima and never stayed long, or out late. Naches is cute, small. Ellensburg is not that far away, I just wouldn't want to go over the pass very often. Kinship Trail Rides in Ellensburg is awesome. Prosser is also a pretty cute place, although a solid 45-1 hr away from Yakima.

Overall, I don't think the area is horrible horrible, and would likely come back if an opportunity came up.

I hope this can help others who may be looking at Yakima and the area but is nervous about Yakima's negative "ratings".

Has how we pronounce “Naches” changed?

Hi! I grew up in Yakima and later moved away. I’ve always pronounced Naches as “Na-cheese” but I’m moving back to the area and finding that some people are pronouncing it “naw-chez”. My first thought was that it might be due to more awareness of indigenous naming and pronunciation, but I’m not sure where the name came from so I don’t know if that applies. Does anyone have more info about this?

Have you been tuned in to what’s been happening? Are you concerned for Washington state?

Night sky watchers or Telescope enthusiasts?

Does anyone locally go outside at night often? Some nights are pretty calm but there's been a crazy uptick the past couple weeks. I see innumerable "satellites", flashes, hyper speed streaks, atmos debridement, and these tiny tiny super dim movers that are almost imperceptible until you look hard enough with your periphery. If anyone else watches nightly I'd love to chat about it!

Gym with downhill treadmill?

I’m training for a race next year, and it has some major downhill sections. Does anyone know if there is a gym in the Yakima or even Tri Cities area that has one of those rare treadmills that actually slants down?

Anyone notice that Huge satellite to your right as you're driving towards Ellensburg?

Maybe I never noticed before, but near the rest stop on your right as you head out, you can see a huge white satellite. What is it? Whose is it? I need to know!!

moving to school at PNWU

hellooooo

does anyone have any info about what it’s like to live as a student alone in Selah or Moxie? Looking for housing preferably in Terrace Heights due to proximity for school but that has proven rather difficult… There’s cheaper / nicer places in Selah but I’ve heard very mixed things about the vibes? Thx!
