Instagram randomly unfollowed Mamdani and Bernie Sanders for me — anyone else?

Hello,

I just logged into Instagram and had Mamdani and Sanders show up as suggested accounts to follow but I know for a fact I was previously following both of them. I know I never unfollowed either account so this immediately struck me as fishy.

I remember around the most recent presidential election friends of mine noticed they were following Trump/MAGA accounts when they had never followed them. It makes me wonder if something similar is happening in reverse with progressive accounts being unfollowed?

Has anyone else noticed this happening with Mamdani, Sanders, or other political accounts?

Madmani’s words when handing out kulfis

Not a New Yorker, not American, but somehow Mamdani's kulfi hustle is all over my feed. Had to immortalize the vibe.

Mamdani fires Haitian workers after Trump administration revokes their legal status

“The City of New York was forced by federal law, as recently decided by the Supreme Court, to review the work authorization of Haitian TPS holders and separate from any employees who have not established alternative paths to legal work,” Mamdani said in an August 7 press statement.

With this announcement, Mamdani assumed the role of enforcer of the anti-immigrant policies of the fascistic Trump administration and the far-right majority on the US Supreme Court. On June 25, in Mullin v. Doe, the court upheld the decision of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to end TPS status for some 350,000 Haitian and 50,000 Syrian immigrants, stripping them of their work permits and making them subject to immediate deportation. On July 27, the DHS implemented the Supreme Court ruling by terminating TPS for Haitians and Syrians.

In his August 7 announcement, Mamdani made no appeal for protests or other solidarity actions in defense of Haitian workers, let alone calling for strike action by the city’s powerful working class. He did not even say the city would take legal action to protect the jobs of Haitian workers and block their deportation back to Haiti.

While avoiding any suggestion that workers and youth mobilize to defend Haitian workers, he said, “Only President Trump has the power to restore TPS or grant ‘Deferred Enforced Departure’ to affected TPS holders.” He thus urged Haitians and their defenders to direct their appeals to the author of the anti-immigrant rampage, the same fascist who has accused Haitian immigrants of eating the pets of Americans and called Haiti a “shithole country” that is “filthy, dirty, and disgusting.”

Parallels between the Tea Tax and Pied-a-terre tax

Tea tax / Boston Tea Party NYC pied-à-terre tax
British government wanted additional revenue from the colonies NYC/NY State wants additional revenue to address the city's fiscal needs
Tax targeted a particular economic activity/product Tax targets certain high-value non-primary residences
Government argued taxation served legitimate public purposes Mamdani/Hochul argue the surcharge makes wealthy property owners contribute more to public services
Opponents viewed the tax as imposed by a government they believed did not adequately represent them Critics can argue that non-NYC owners are being taxed by a city in which they may not reside or vote
Tax became a symbol of a broader dispute over government power Pied-à-terre tax can become a symbol of a broader dispute over wealth taxation and NYC's treatment of wealthy/nonresident owners
Resistance was partly about the principle of taxation, not simply the amount Opposition can similarly be about precedent: what other targeted taxes could follow?

Praise to The NYC Department of Sanitation ♥️

Los Angeles is known as the City of Angels. What is less well known is that New York City is full of angels too, and the Department of Sanitation is full of them. Here is my story.

On Saturday, August 1, 2026, I was riding a Citi Bike during the Summer Streets celebration, starting at Dyckman Street, riding down Broadway to Park Avenue, and continuing into Brooklyn. I had my iPhone mounted on the handlebars. Somewhere along the route, I looked down and noticed that my phone was gone. I panicked.

My phone was my only point of contact with the two friends I planned to spend the beautiful afternoon with. It was the only way I could contact anyone. I had no idea how or where I had lost it, and the only thing I could think to do was lock up the Citi Bike, get on the subway, and use my computer at home to search for my phone through the Find My app.

When I got off the subway and was walking home, I met the first angel who helped me, NYPD Officer Barreto from the 70th Precinct in Brooklyn . I asked him to call my phone, hoping that someone would answer. He called, and to my surprise, the second angel picked up.

It was Dana. She was with the Department of Sanitation, and she had my phone at 110th Street and Broadway. She told me that a good Samaritan had found my phone in the street and handed it to one of her sanitation colleagues. I immediately jumped back on the subway and headed downtown to pick it up.

When I arrived, I was shocked by how kind Dana and her colleagues were. None of them had to do the right thing, but every one of them did. In the past, I found someone’s suitcase in the back of a taxicab and returned it to the owner. I also found someone’s iPod and returned it. I was stunned that so many people cared enough to do the same for me.

I was thrilled and deeply grateful for the kindness everyone showed me. I asked to take a photo with them, and they graciously obliged. The names of the other's who deserve praise are Donald, Dominick, and Michael. I thank Officer Barreto and the good samaritan who found my phone on the street too. You are all heroes to me.

Zohran, I am talking to you. Please give these wonderful people the keys to New York City. They deserve recognition. It is not about the phone. It is about doing the right thing, which seems to be so rare these days. Better yet, if you can swing it, give them all a two week paid vacation in Hawaii. I mean, seriously.

Thank you to everyone who helped me. You are angels.

I Bow,

David Hunter

The Trump Justice Department just sent Mayor Zohran Mamdani a formal letter.

The Trump Justice Department just sent Mayor Zohran Mamdani a formal letter — and it could not be more serious.

The DOJ’s Civil Rights Division is demanding answers from Mamdani over allegations of the “unequal treatment” of Jewish New Yorkers — as antisemitic hate crimes continue surging under his administration.

Here are the numbers released by the NYPD just this week. Hate crimes against Jewish New Yorkers rose more than 50% in July alone — and 8.5% across the entire first seven months of Mamdani’s time in office.

Jewish New Yorkers make up just 10% of the city’s population — yet account for 56.9% of ALL hate crimes in New York City.

And here’s what makes it even more outrageous. While antisemitic attacks surged — murder dropped 22.8% and shootings dropped 7.5%. Every other crime category is going DOWN. Only hate crimes against Jews are going UP.

Mamdani spent $26 million — an 800% budget increase — on his Office of Hate Crime Prevention. And antisemitism still set new records.

September 11 victim families are now calling for Mamdani to be excluded from the Ground Zero 25th anniversary ceremony — citing his positions on Israel and Jewish New Yorkers.

Words without action mean nothing. Mamdani has had seven months. The numbers tell the real story.

The DOJ is now asking the questions Jewish New Yorkers deserve answers to.
