Am I the only one who thinks Aaliyah was on her way to becoming the Black woman leading the early-2000s femme fatale/action genre?

At the time, that lane was dominated by actresses like Angelina Jolie, Milla Jovovich, Charlize Theron, and Kate Beckinsale. Aaliyah already had Romeo Must Die, Queen of the Damned under her belt, plans to appear in The Matrix universe, and was reportedly in the running for Alex in Charlie’s Angels. It really felt like it was on brand for her and Hollywood was positioning her as the Black actress who could headline stylish, high-concept action films.

Halle Berry certainly broke ground with Catwoman, but that film’s reception made it harder for the industry to invest in Black women as action leads. I’ve always wondered what that landscape would’ve looked like if Aaliyah had lived. It seemed like she was carving out a lane that no one else occupied at the time.

This is sort of what i refer to when I say she kind of left a big gap in the industry.

****I just read somewhere that the surviving Eric who was on her team mentioned that she had plans to produce an anime series with Joel Silver?! Does anyone know more about this?
