AOE2DE - Real World Map and Fantasy Map(1)

Originally created solely for my own amusement with friends, this collection includes 26 maps covering various regions of the real world, as well as other fantasy maps. Subscriptions are welcome if you enjoy them. (´・ω・`)

The maps themselves may have some imperfections, which you can modify yourself. However, please do not upload them publicly without permission... After all, creating a map takes considerable time and effort. If you wish to create derivative works, please inform me first and credit the original author. Thank you. (ゝ∀・)

Online pvp still a thing?

Hey everyone! I used to play Age of Empires 3 religiously when I was like 10 years old. Lost the game and never had money to get a PC. Always was a console player. I just purchased my first ever gaming PC and have really been wanting to satisfy the nostalgia of playing Age of Empires online with others. Is there still an active community of online players? Is it specifically on one game or another? Looking on steam, I can’t find the age of empires 3 base game. Only DLC and free trials. Any help is appreciated. I’d love to find a community that plays!

A Deckbuilding Card Game Inspired by Age of Empires 3

Disclaimer: this game concept was created under Microsoft's "Game Content Usage Rules" using assets from Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition, and it is not endorsed by or affiliated with Microsoft.

Hello everyone, lately I've been thinking that it would be nice to have a card game inspired by Age of Empires III. Two years ago, someone from the community started a similar project, but unfortunately, we never heard any further news about it after this post.

I would like to hear your opinion on the card game project I am proposing here. I started designing the cards (the text is in French on some cards because it’s my mother tongue. I plan to translate everything into English if people are interested in the project).

What is a deckbuilding game?

One common issue with many trading card games (TCGs) is that a large part of the game actually takes place outside the match itself: carefully building your deck. In a deckbuilding game, this aspect is reified and turned into a core mechanic. Both players start with the same deck of mediocre cards. On their turn, they can play cards from their hand to gain resources, then use those resources to buy cards from a "market": a set of cards available for both players to purchase. In doing so, they gradually make their deck stronger.

When a card is bought from the market, it is added to the player’s discard pile, and a new card is drawn from the main deck to refill the market. When a player's deck is empty and they need to draw, they shuffle their discard pile to form a new deck.

Rules

The game is played by two players, in turn-based fashion. Each player must defend their Town Center and destroy their opponent's. The first player to reduce the opposing Town Center's hit points to 0 wins the game.

Players begin the game with a basic deck made up of 10 cards. On each turn, players play cards from their hand to gain resources and build up military forces. These resources can be used to buy additional cards from a market of 5 cards.

The game is divided into rounds, each made up of 2 turns called phases:

  • The expansion phase, during which players deploy their military units on the battlefield and buy cards with their resources.
  • The combat phase, during which players have their military units fight, with the goal of breaking through the enemy’s defenses to reach their economy and, ultimately, their Town Center.

At the end of each turn, players discard their entire hand and draw 5 cards. At the end of each round, the market slots are gradually replaced with cards from more advanced ages.

The game includes four resources:

  • Gold
  • Wood
  • Food
  • Experience

The first three are used to buy cards from the market and do not carry over from one turn to the next. Cards played during a turn may provide resources, which are virtually placed into a shared "pool". The player may spend the resources in this pool as they wish, either to buy cards or to trigger specific effects. However, at the end of their turn, the pool is emptied.

Experience accumulates over the course of the game through certain actions. It allows players to draw cards from a special deck of various one-use boost cards.

An important mechanic of the game consists in removing the weakest cards from your deck and acquiring increasingly powerful ones.

Combat phase

The battlefield is a 4×3 grid. During the expansion phase, each player may place military units in the two rows closest to them. Each grid space can contain only one unit at a time.

Units may have a ranged attack, a hand attack, or both. Hand attacks have a range of 0, while ranged attacks can target units or buildings at a greater distance. Units follow the classical yet rich counter system of Age of Empires 3: some are more effective against cavalry, while others are devastating against infantry.

The player whose military units have the highest combined speed has the initiative. In case of a tie, the player whose Town Center has the fewest hit points has the initiative. If there is still a tie, the player who started the game has the initiative.

Players activate their military units in descending order of speed. When both players have units with the same speed, they alternate turns. Each time a unit is activated, it may move and/or attack, or do nothing. Once all surviving units have completed their actions, the combat phase ends.

Some units must choose between attacking or moving, while others can move and then attack, or attack and then move. A unit may only move onto empty spaces.

Issues

I played a game with a friend, and we found several issues with the current rules. Like any game, it needs careful balancing. Units may not be strong enough at the moment, and some combat phases can end in a stalemate. It is quite difficult to reach the opponent's Town Center.

Another issue is the resource system. With three different resources, it becomes harder to get the right combination needed to buy new cards from the market, which can slow down or even block the game.

I am also not sure yet how to properly integrate the different civilizations into the gameplay. Right now, nothing prevents a player from buying units and buildings from different civilizations if they are available in the market. The only civilization-related mechanic is that some cards have synergies/effects with other cards from the same civilization, but I think this could be improved. Overall, the combat phase may also be too complex.

I hope to get some constructive ideas and feedback from the community!

Got Raja of the people!

Tried to get it maybe 10 times and my last attempt I had to build some more units as I wasn’t able to kill all the units attacking a village but was able to get them away from it. Did not finish the level on hard as I just wanted the achievement today as I got tired of trying to play the level..

Introducing aoe2matchup.com: quickly run simulations for any unit on a head to head matchup!

I've been building a website called aoe2matchup.com to answer the question I kept asking myself mid-game - will the temple guards beat woad raiders? which is the best camel unit in game?

So I created a simulation website where you can quickly test units head to head! I extracted the actual unit data straight from the game's files, so that it can always update with the latest patch. From there, I created more features, like unit rankings and more!

Battle Sim — pick any two units for any two civs and run a combat simulation in the browser to see exactly how a fight plays out, not just a stat comparison.

https://aoe2matchup.com - BattleSim

Rankings — Once I had the simulator, I ran every unit vs a baseline to see which unit performs the best. You can order this by specific unit classes too.

https://aoe2matchup.com/units?line=archery - unit rankings

Civilization & Unit pages — full stat breakdowns per civ/unit, including exactly which techs and bonuses are contributing to each number, along with upscaled unit visuals to view your favorite unit up close!

Civ deep dives - with high res attack animation of each unit

- and more features like civ match up advisor, replay viewer and patch analyzer!

It's still evolving — if you spot something that looks off (a stat, a matchup result, a UI bug), I'd genuinely appreciate a heads up so I can dig into it. Join the discord to share more feedback! - discord invite.

Need 2v2 build & synergy advice username: Mr. Monke

Former French main who recently switched over to Malians and I’m looking for some advice to help my transition. I play exclusively 2v2s with a buddy (capncook) who mains Byz, and we’re trying to climb back to Plat.

I’m currently experimenting with my build order, but I’d love some feedback on my decision-making:

* **Cow Boom Timing:** Right now, I open with a Barracks and Archery Range in Feudal, then try to get a double mill cow boom rolling. Is this a reliable standard, or should I be greedier/more aggressive?

* **The 2nd TC:** Is it actually worth the gold investment? I find that if I survive the first 15–20 minutes, I have a massive eco lead, but my army quality feels really lackluster compared to other civs in the late game. No death ball I can pursue if I manage to boom. Why boom if there is no death ball? I would only go for the 2TC if double cow boom is in progress/already complete.

* **Late Game Comp:** What’s the "gold standard" army composition for Malians in 2v2s? I know it’s map-dependent, but what’s generally viable right now? Mass Javelins?

* **Landmarks:** What are the meta landmark choices for a standard 2v2 game? Is Farimba worth it to pump out of 24/7? Any units in Farimba you avoid?

**The biggest thing I need help with is 2v2 synergy:**

My partner (capncook) mains Byz and usually goes for a Fast Castle into an all-in push. I can't leave him out to dry while I’m booming. If anyone has some free time to watch our recent 2v2 ranked replays, notes on whether I’m supporting him correctly or if we need to adjust our timings to sync up better.

Empires of Bronze: Clash at Kadesh - Pharaohs and Command Group

Hello again!

It's time for Ramses II and Seti I from our upcoming Kickstarter campaign: Empires of Bronze: Clash at Kadesh. Seti I is the one with "scaled dress" and the one with winged chest is Ramses II.

This week I'd like to showcase the most iconic leaders from Egypt during this period. They will be part of the Ancient Egypt faction:

- Pharaoh Ramses II
- Pharaoh Seti I
- Egyptian Infantry Command Group

Both pharaohs come in the same set. They have two poses, one with javelin and another with bow. The driver is the same for both, and you have 8 different scaled chasis to choose. Four horses in different poses make a good variation.

About the command group, they are all in one piece so they could be an easy to print group of models, I consider they cover the role to be near to infantry.

Additionally I wanted to show you a gallery of hand painted samples of our 3D printed tests from this campaign.

See you next week with more previews and then there will be Hittites!

[Question] Long-form vs. Split videos: What do you prefer for AoE gameplay?

Hi everyone!

I’ve been working on a series of Age of Empires gameplay videos and I’m looking for some feedback to improve the viewer experience. I have some videos that go over 20 minutes, and I'm debating the best format for the community:

  • Option A: Keeping it as a single, long-form video (more complete).
  • Option B: Splitting it into smaller parts (easier to digest).

What format do you personally prefer to watch? Also, if you have any feedback on the quality or content, I’d love to hear it. Here is the playlist I’m currently organizing:

Thanks in advance for the help!

Will Age of Empires 3 come to macOS??

Hello everyone, wonderful community.

I’m new here, though I’ve been playing the AoE games for years (not competitively, as you might expect—I’m just someone who enjoys these RTS games).

The thing is, for practical reasons, I have to use a Mac, and as you probably know, that operating system isn't exactly "gamer-friendly."

However, a month ago, Feral Interactive’s port of "Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition" arrived on Steam. I’ve been playing it, and it’s fantastic. But I want more. Do you think a port of "Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition" will come to macOS? I’d love to be able to play the AoE series without having to rely on third-party software (like CrossOver or Nvidia GeForce Now).

--

A database and toolset for AOE2

I created this website as a comprehensive database for AOE2, where you can explore everything and find the info you need.

I've added civilizations, units, buildings, technologies, tech tree, and tools like army counter planner, battle simulator, civilization comparisons, win rate stats, and production planner.

https://aoe2db.com

Let me know what you'd like to see added next, and I'll take a look.

Let me know if there are any bugs!

---

EDIT: Thank you all for your comments, including the constructive criticism. It has been very helpful and I have updated and refreshed the site. If you have feedback, please tell me and I'll look into it.

Where can I play Multiplayer sessions of Age of Empires 2 & The Conquerors Expansion in 2026? >> HD Version

Hello dear Players and Community. I am just an Age of Empires 2 & The Conquerors player and fan, that is feeling nostalgic.

I want to ask the Old School and New Players here:

What will be the 2 best ways to play Age of Empires 2 with Conquerors Expansion in 2026 (The HD version)??
Does any of these methods will apply to Mac? (or be compatible if I use CrossOver?)/

By "Best Ways to Play" I will mean:

1). With a big community of players in 2026
2). Easy setup, and Mac OS friendly if possible (I use CrossOver)

******** If not, would it be easier to play using the Original Age of Empires 2 with The Conquerors Expansion instead of the HD version?? *********

I truly appreciate your insights, and tips. I am thankful since now!

(Quick note: I am not wishing to play the new version "Definite Editon"). Again, its a nostalgic topic dear players and community.

Best Age of for multiplayer

Hey, we are planning to buy age of with my friend on ps5, but we are unsure about which one is active the most and better suited for multiplayer. Is it AoE 3 AoE 2 or Mythology? What are your thoughts? Thanks
