So, the info I have on them is that 1-4 was released in shops but 5+6 had to be applied for and that's why they're a lot harder to find. Also the last few pictures are of a military style envelope that a flattened ammo crate box was in and it also had to be applied for, again meaning they're difficult to find and quite expensive when you do. I also included photos of the ammo crate fully assembled. Let me know if you have more info. Thanks guys 💊💊😎

I watched Akira in 4K at the cinema last night

And it was bloody amazing! I love this movie so much. Seeing it for the first time, on a big screen, in a practically sold out cinema was an awesome experience. You could hear a pin drop.

Edit: Fun to note that it screened back to back with Godzilla (1954) in 4K as well.

I finally watched Akira for the first time…

Simply… Wow. I’m 38, never got around to watching this when I was younger, and that’s a damn shame. I was amazed at the quality of the art style. The fact that all of it was hand-drawn blows my mind. Sure, the plot was a little confusing since I haven’t read the manga, but it didn’t matter. I see now why this movie had so much impact. It made me fall back in love with anime, a genre I haven’t watched in more than a decade. Any recommendations for what I should watch next would be greatly appreciated!

Edit: Y’all are amazing! Thanks for the recs:
Tekkon Kinkreet
Ghost in the Shell
Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust
Paprika
Spirited Away
Your Name
Redline
Ninja Scroll
Princess Mononoke
Perfect Blue
Jin Roh
Grave of the Fireflies
Memories
Robot Carnival
Steamboy

Movie vs. Manga: Best way to experience Akira for the first time?

Hi guys,

I'm finally ready to dive in, but I want to have the best first-time experience. Should I watch the movie first, or start with the manga?

I'd love your (spoiler-free) recommendations on which path to take and why!

Thanks!

Edit:

A huge thank you to everyone who commented and shared their advice!

I ended up watching the movie first, and wow, it is definitely a masterpiece. It was such an awesome experience, but the story totally hooked me and left me wanting more from this universe. I really need to know what happens next, how the characters develop, and where the story goes from here.

Because of that, I will definitely be reading the manga next. I can't wait to get my hands on the books!

Otomo's camera commercial

If you enjoy Otomo’s drawings, two illustrations I included are sourced from the art book: KABA: Otomo Katsuhiro Artwork 1971-1989. KABA includes a number of sketches of these Canon Ad characters specifically, and of many others Otomo created during this early pre-90’s period.

The song used in FUTURE CITY is Takumi Iwasaki’s Fragments of Time (1984). If you search for this on YouTube, you can find that part of this track actually has a similar motif to Geinoh Yamashirogumi’s Kaneda, one of the most well-known anime scores ever made for the 1988 feature film adaptation of Akira. It is thus interesting to note that this early musical reference originated in the selection for one of these Canon TV commercials.

Life goal completed

Loved Akira since being a kid, I remember watching something called ghost watch on the BBC one year and it was mega scary, and I ended up not wanting to go to sleep for fear of ghosts or something.
It was into the AM hours and on BBC2 they put Akira on, I watched it as a child and thought it was the coolest most amazing cartoon in the world but my mother come into my room and turned my tv off as it was super late so I never got to see the ending.
Teenage years I found it again and learned about the books. Been in love with it so long and promised that “one day” I would get these bad boys.
All 38 and absolutely mint condition. I have the 35th anniversary collection but I so badly want to be the first to turn these pages, none of them have been opened and it’s almost a crime to not read them but I did buy them to do the whole “collection” thing

Just got this for my birthday (I love my daughter) I wanted to know if this was an original pressing. Im not sure that it is, not that it matters. But, if it was, I don't want to open it. I would rather get something modern and frame this instead.

Katsuhiro Otomo discusses Osamu Tezuka in new documentary!

How cool is this? Akira creator Katsuhiro Otomo talks about the legacy of Astro Boy creator Osamu Tezuka in a new clip from an upcoming documentary about Tezuka.

I could listen to Otomo talk about manga for hours, but this will tide me over for a bit!

It has finally arrived!

I was looking for some tips to conserve this box properly, and if there’s anything I need to watch out for. I feel guilty to even open this box, it’s so beautiful!
