2026 School tax hocus pocus - make it make sense.

Just got my AASD school tax bill and from last year to this year the increase was a WHOPPING 86%.

My sister lives a block away from me, her increase was only 39% up from last year. Still a huge increase but less than half of my increase.

We both live in the same blue collar, 100 year old neighborhood and no improvements were made to either property in the last ~20 years.

Make it make sense.

Popular bars?

Hiiii! I’m a female in my 30s, I visit Altoona weekly for clinicals and was going to start staying up there a couple of nights every other week. What are some good places to venture out to?

Keystone state. A geographical and historical hub of America. Where or what are your favorite places to visit within the Commonwealth? Especially since its our Semiquicentennial.

I love that almost every county has a state park.

To the people in the accident on 22 near Hollidaysburg.

If you’re here on Reddit, Facebook or even related to and friends with them then please let me know or give me a status update on how you’re/they’re doing. I’m praying for you guys right now and just very concerned and shaken up by what I saw. I was about 300-400 yards back when the accident occurred and just saw the dust go up in the air.

Dining in the area…

I just spent the weekend in Altoona and the food was pretty abysmal except for Jack and George. Champs is so bad… Knickerbockers menu is dated and expensive BUT I love that place. Texas Hotdogs? Look for what I paid it was pretty good.

I understand that there are good pizza and pasta shops in the area but are there any other good spots to have a meal the next time I’m in town? I’m not concerned about cost.

Altoona bucks to make friends

Why is it so hard to make friends in Altoona these days? Been trying to find like like minded people is crazy. I don't do drugs and I dont drink maybe thats why. Wish I had some good places to meet people with out it being a church. I'm 47 years old and most the time I just meet salty people. Help!!

All right r/altoona, I have a mystery that needs solving and I need your help!

Hey friends, I have a "what is it" mystery I'm looking to solve, and I'm hoping there's someone on this sub who knows someone who knows someone who can help.

For context, I lived in the Altoona area for ~20 years or so, but moved across the country about 11 years ago. When my family first moved there, we stayed in a condo on Blue Knob. Specifically, one of these guys on Moss Creek Dr. I wasn't part of the original conversation, but the story goes that when we purchased it, the realtor said something along the lines of, "You probably don't want to go any further down the road, the people down there are.... weird."

This happened the better part of 30 years ago, and I've been curious about it ever since. One would assume that with the advent of aerial and satellite imagery, I would have the tools to solve this mystery myself. To the contrary, though. Better mapping has only deepened it for me.

A quick scroll down the road on Google Maps shows a few small things that could be structures, but for the most part there's not much along the labeled portion of the road... until the end. At the point where the mapped road terminates, there's something that looks an awful lot like a large tunnel that just.... goes into the ground.

There are a bunch of reasonable explanations for this, notably the fact that it's only the "mapped" road that terminates and is subsequently followed by a bunch of dirt roads that could very easily be fire or access roads for public or county land. A tunnel that size could easily be for municipal vehicles or some other kind of storage.

To the point, though, my question is "does anyone have any idea what that thing is?" I'm certainly not asking people to wander out that way, I'm still wary about the "weird people" comment our realtor made. At the same time, though, I fondly recall ATV'ing around a ton of similar roads in both Blue Knob and beyond, and it just feels unlikely that no one knows what's back there when it's so close to the ski resort and all the other little towns in the area.

So that's it! Can anyone help me solve a 30 year old mystery?

Question for recent/current high schoolers

When I attended Altoona high in the mid 00’s I had a swim teacher who held “Olympic” style events once a year and recorded record times etc over his course as a teacher. I have no idea if he’s still there (feel bad but I forget his name, I forget everyone’s name) but was just curious if somehow this was still a thing. Highly doubtful, but would be neat.
