What if you could take one frustrating experience with an Indian government website or digital service and rebuild it into something genuinely better?
Build What Moves India is a hackathon focused on rethinking India’s public digital services — not just making them look better, but solving the deeper UX, backend, infrastructure and process problems behind them.
🎯 THE CHALLENGE
Pick one real problem you've faced on an Indian public-service website or digital service.
You could rethink services related to:
🛠️ WHAT YOU HAVE TO BUILD
Build an independent, working prototype using Codex or an OpenAI model.
Your solution should:
⚠️ This is NOT just a UI redesign.
Judges want you to think about the backend, infrastructure and processes required to make the solution actually work.
🤖 OPENAI REQUIREMENT
Codex or an OpenAI model must be a meaningful part of the build process — not something simply mentioned in the submission.
You can use other tools and libraries, but you must clearly explain how OpenAI contributed to your solution.
📦 WHAT TO SUBMIT
1️⃣ Live demo link
2️⃣ Demo video — ideally ≤ 3 minutes
3️⃣ Short write-up covering the problem, users, solution, OpenAI usage, functionality, mocks & limitations
4️⃣ Source code / reviewer-access link — optional
🔗 Every submitted link should work without requesting access.
🏆 HOW BUILDS ARE JUDGED
🎯 Problem — Is it a real, important problem?
⚙️ Working Build — Does the main journey actually work?
✨ Usability — Is it simpler, clearer & accessible?
🧠 Product Thinking — Are the decisions thoughtful?
🔗 End-to-End Thinking — Does it address backend/infrastructure/processes?
🔍 Honesty — Are mocks, limitations & dependencies clearly disclosed?
🚫 IMPORTANT RULES
❌ Don't interfere with live government systems
❌ Don't reverse-engineer private systems or use undocumented APIs
❌ Don't use real Aadhaar/PAN/OTP/payment/health data
❌ Don't present the prototype as an official government product
❌ Don't misuse government logos
❌ Don't submit an old project with minor changes
🏅 WHAT'S NEXT?
Deadline : Aug 27, 2026
🔥 10 finalist builds are currently planned to be selected.
📅 Finale Window: 5–6 September 2026
🎥 Filmed Shoot: Planned for 6 September 2026
Selected builders will receive further details about timing, location, travel support and preparation.
⚠️ Note: The official site currently does not clearly publish a registration deadline, so register as early as possible.
The real challenge is:
Find a broken public-service experience → understand why it fails → rebuild the entire journey → prove that your solution works. 🇮🇳
