Are there any lawyers for sovereign citizens? In all fairness, I try to understand everybody's movement and counter-movements but, for civil or criminal matters, sovereign or not, one needs adequate legal representation.

1A Auditor Summit
On June 23, 2026, the New York Court of Appeals ruled against SeanPaul Reyes, known online as Long Island Audit, on a key state-law question in his challenge to the NYPD’s ban on filming inside police precinct lobbies. The court held that New York State and New York City Right to Record Acts do not give people a statutory right to record inside publicly accessible police stationhouse lobbies.
Reyes sued New York City after he was arrested in 2023 while filming inside Brooklyn NYPD precinct lobbies. He argued that the NYPD recording ban violated the First Amendment and New York’s state and city Right to Record Acts. A federal district court had previously granted preliminary relief on the statutory claims, and the Second Circuit certified the state-law question to New York’s highest court.
On June 23, 2026, the Court of Appeals answered the certified question in the negative. The court said the Right to Record Acts were aimed at recording police activity in public spaces such as streets and sidewalks, not inside police stationhouses. The First Amendment claim returns to federal court and was not decided by the New York Court of Appeals.
This is a major police-lobby filming case. It does not say people have no First Amendment right to record in precinct lobbies, but it does say New York’s state and city recording statutes do not provide that right there.
The court interpreted New York Civil Rights Law § 79-p and New York City Administrative Code § 14-189. The First Amendment issue remains separate. The ruling is binding New York state-law authority on the statutory question, but not a final federal First Amendment ruling.
The state-law question was answered on June 23, 2026. The federal First Amendment challenge remains to be resolved in federal court.
Watch for the Second Circuit’s next order or opinion applying the New York Court of Appeals answer to the pending federal appeal.
