Now Arcanum unity port is playable in browser

Again, repo of this project is on Github.

Obviously, browser can't access your local files directly. So you will have to chose some files from your Arcanum's installation folder.

But after that I can access it in memory and read it.

I'll do some cleanup and make public demo on Github pages after that.

I had three followers instead of two... how?

So, my character has 9 Charisma and is an apprentice in Persuassion, thus I should be allowed to have max 2 followers. But for a time, I had three - namely, before I decided to start over because reasons.

So, during my first (quick, never left Tarant) playthrough, I did as follows:

  1. Went to Tarant with Virgil.

  2. Recruited Magnus.

  3. Completed P. Schuyler & Sons' 'basement' without strucking a deal with them.

  4. Freed and recruited Gar.

Right then, I had three followers: Virgil, Magnus, and Gar.

But, during my current playgthough, I did as follows:

  1. Went to Tarant with Virgil and Sogg.

  2. Freed Gar but was too low leveled for him to join.

  3. Reached a higher level but Gar refused to join as my group was too big for him.

  4. Magnus doesn't want to join on the same ground.

So, I have two followers: Virgil and Sogg.

My question is, does anyone understand why could I have three followers during my first playthrough, but can't have them now?

Tim Cain talking about what attributes do (old video)

So I'm sure many people have already seen many of Tim Cain's videos, and probably this specific one, but even though I've played the game a lot, I find there are many details and subtleties that I was not aware of, and this video highlights several of them.

For one thing, I didn't know that every stat gives you an extra bonus at 20 -- as Cain puts it, "[the stat] increases [the thing] much higher than the formula says it should." E.g. 20 Beauty means regardless of any other factors, your initial likeability rating will never go below a certain threshold (he doesn't remember exactly what it is).

Some other nuggets I took away:

  • He fully recognizes that some stats are way stronger than others; I mean duh.
  • 20 Int bestows a bonus on every skill that is rolled, as though it is 10 points higher (I'm not sure if he means the stat for the skill is 10 points higher or the skill itself is 10 points higher, probably the latter.)
  • (I feel silly for this one) Int determines how many spells you can maintain -- he also says that Int determines whether you can use a scroll; is this actually correct? I thought it was just magick aptitude.
  • The bonus for 20 Dex was supposed to be that you never slip on ice, but the formula makes that happen at 13 Dex.
  • Knew this one but it's interesting: WP factors into HP but only half as much as Str and Con. This always seemed like compensation for mages but I've always thought it was weird and maybe too strong, especially given how powerful magick is in general.
  • He notes that Cha touches the most functions in the game (I think that's what he's saying at 10:10). A 20 Cha bestows a bunch of bonuses I had no idea about, some of which deal with multiplayer.

Anyway, I found this video very interesting and I suspect the community has a lot of other nuggets of functionality that I'm not aware of.

Arcanum Scribbles 5 (art by me)

Part 1part 2 | part 3 | part 4

1 - (っ˶ ˘ ³˘)´ ᵕ `˶ς), a colored version of (っ˶ ˘ ᵕ˘)ˆᵕ ˆ˶ς)

2 - Swyft design idea. For some reason, I pictured those elf lady sprites as them wearing chaps rather than leotards, but that may be my bias for more practical garments ^((I used to do ballet as a kid and I) ^(hated) ^(wearing leotards, so I cannot imagine wearing it as everyday clothes).)

3 - Very rough sketch ideas of Ancient God Shakar. I want to do illustrations for the other Ancient Gods in a similar vein to this one I did of Geshtianna, but I'm stumped on this guy's design, even with his book description. I like fantasy deities looking quite eldritch, so if anyone's got any cool ideas to make this dude's design weirder, I'd love to hear it!

4 - Some city elf design ideas, based on Meiji era fashions.

5 - Old Raven sketch from late 2024.

6 - Old sketch from early 2025, featuring >!Arronax!<, before I decided to give him a cool braid instead of that dinky dead-anime-mom side ponytail he has in canon.

7 - Old Loghaire sketch from early 2025, before I later decided to give him a bitchin' beard. I largely referenced his in-game portrait in this one as I was figuring out how to draw him in my style.

8 - Little doodle of a friend's Living One.

9 - Virgil and Carth Onasi (KoTOR), my fav brunet starter RPG companion dudes who don't wanna talk about it </3

10-13 - A bonus clean-shaven version of Virgil from the previous image (I drew his facial hair on a separate layer). During the sketch phase, a friend and I joked about how wrong he looks without his facial hair, and I scribbled our Living Ones to illustrate our opinions.

^(There's more but I doubt anyone wants this subreddit flooded with more of my Living One x Virgil art)

Need fun build suggestions

Hey all,

I've been playing this game on and off pretty much since it came out. I've done a lot of builds, both good and evil, mage, melee, gunslinger, throwing (magical and explosive), and tech/melee.

My latest was an inventor making gear for my party and they've gone God Mode. It's getting kinda boring now, I just sit back and they destroy everything.

Looking for fun build suggestions, maybe some RP along with it. Let me know what you've all enjoyed or something you've always wanted to try!

Thanks!

New start: Evil Mages role play run

One of the hardest runs because some rough choices have to be made, we start strong:

Race: Elf

Background: Only child (Sold your soul is not needed andwe need just 8 Charisma which is easy achievable with Ring of Influence + Jewel of Hebe)

Skill points allocation at the start: 1 point Harm , 1 point Agility of fire , 1 point Disarm , 1 point unlocking Cantrip and I go for Divination school just for the trap spotting and having a way to identify my loot. Next step will be Conveyance School , Fireflash (for this annoying groups of small critters ) and cap Dexterity after that is personal pref the idea is to reach 100% Magick aptitude with Dark helm on

Basic strategy is to take every evil quest and most evil dialogue options , even 1 rank of Prowl + good distance + Unlocking Cantrip (with 90+ magick aptitude) can net you access to almost every shop , especially during the sleep time of NPCs. Everything that is unlocked by Unlocking Cantrip stays open forever so you can restock potions and magic items for free (just be sure you safe before attempt unlocking. I think every player should unlock Evil Virgil at least once just for the role play purposes . Good way to keep your alignment evil is to insult beggars until you reach the cap. Main downside evil path requires some in game knowledge because without Bates help , you have to investigate on your own . My third and last member for this trio Evil Mages will be Geofrey Tallerond - Ashe (I like his lines and he fits perfectly)

Added test scene to check tiles rendering for any sector from the original game

All test scenes are here on Github. You need Unity to test it. And it leads me to the question...

Do I need to create a small build, so everyone (even without Unity) will be able to test these scenes? 🤔

What version is the Steam version?

I'm trying to play Arcanum again and bought the steam version. I'm trying to update it to be playable. I can't find the version number anywhere. Should I just start over and get the GOG version?

I haven't played since 2006, I am thinking about starting a new run. But...

I don't know what's the best way to play. I heard Arcanum struggles on modern hardware. Is the steam version okay or is the GOG version better?

Also, I always play a charisma forward half-elf gun slinger because I love companions. What other fun builds should I try?

Last Day: Diplomat role play run ( post contains spoilers)

Good and bad thing about persuasion runs you achieve your goals pretty quick and you miss a lot of action. I manage to persuade Caladon to accept Tarant terms of joining the Unifed Kingdom , peak in my persuasion journey was to collect the reward for my own bounty and accommodate Min' Gorad if you know what I mean . Magnus become king of the Iron clan and I bring Tseng Ang mage so I get unique dialogue between her and Arronax. Diplomat ending is quite interesting , so I highly recommend it if you never try it. My second run over so its time to think on a next one. Thanks again to this great community for reminds me about this masterpiece of a game

Sammie White Hand Cannon?

I was planning on jumpstarting my gunslinger build by using a fate point to steal Sammie White's hand cannon, but when I check his inventory, he only has a fine revolver. I'm using the UAP 2.02, as well as the considerate weapon mod, but from what I can tell neither of them change his inventory. Any reason why this happened? I'm more curious than anything, as if I really want a hand cannon I can use the debug ring.

I want to play Arcanum again! (It's on sale on Steam right now)

I really want to get back into this game, I had it back when it came out and it's amazing. I have a few questions.

Is the steam version ok, or should I get it somewhere else? (I don't have the CD anymore, or a CD drive for that matter. I wish I had the manual)

Do I need to patch it to enjoy it?

Are there any tips I should be aware of?

Is there any other thing I need to be aware of?

Thanks in advance, hoping to get some free time to explore this amazing CRPG

Funny bug while working on magick in Arcanum port (doors instead of fog)

Currently trying to implement a spell system. And I'm having a lot of problems finding the necessary art for the spells and logic to cast it.

Sometimes it leads to funny interactions 😅

P.S. the project is on Github.

Need help for weird and specific challenge runs to make some funny YT videos on the challenge run style, because I noticed the lack of videos on this topic on YouTube and recently I've been wanting to practice video making.

So, funny thematic ideas, like

"Becoming a millionaire as a greedy Gnome" for example

And other dumb ideas I had, like a full genocide one that uses black necromantic to complete main quests and stuff

Or a completionist of sorts, or

I am not very creative, what about trash cans only?, what about only over world encounter loot?

What about beating the game WITHOUT ever engaging on the main quest?

So on and so forth, I really wanna do the becoming q millionaire one, but I need ideas, fun, dumb ideas, mitten squad style.

Thank btw.

Public repo for Unity Arcanum and basic docs

So, I've decided to start early and release part of the project on GitHub.

Right now, it contains:

  1. Structures for parsing the original assets
  2. Documentation about the original formats

I've also recently started working on test scenes where I can view assets and animations together, because it's impossible to validate everything through code/tests alone.

I'm going to release the source code step by step, module by module, after proper testing and code cleanup.

Day 1: Magic Diplomat role play

For the start I pick Harm so I can clear the starting area and 1 point Persuasion so I can convince Bregho's partner to hand the artifact. I always come back to Fahrkus before the final conflict , just as a memento from where my journey starts. Idea for this run is max Persuasion so I can do all of the diplomatic quests , 2 Ogres as bodyguards and a holy man to support our diplomatic missions. Thankfully most of the Tarrant quests can be done by the power of talking and as you can see Laura likes her new employment at Madam Lil's. I managed to free Gar and help Magnus' revenge so that's total of 3 fate points together with the bandits at Shrouded Hills. I immediately steal "Ring of Influence" with my first fate point (huge boost to charisma and beauty) , during my first visit to Black root I found Arcane staff at the vendor - huge boost to my support character. Ogres for me should use their fists so Machined Gauntlets are kinda top notch for this role play idea early on. Next very important item is Jewel of Hebe this way I max out charisma without spending points and get high Beaty values so with smoking jacket on and max out Haggle , I spend less gold than I earn from quests and loot selling ( Haggle pairs very well on Magic heavy Diplomats since you go for Willpower anyways ). I bring back mine to Sarah so Shrouded hills is saved. I decide to work with Gilbert Bates (for now) but his mansion looks very tempting... You can pick whatever spells you like , I prefer to support my bodyguards rather than steal the spotlight , so my picks are mostly utility spells. I used my second fate point to steal Black Root taxes , this quest seems bugged , I picked up the newspaper and still can't force the Persuasion dialogue option somehow . I spend few points in INT so I can have access to all dialogues (by memory I need 12 for almost all dialogues and this is good milestone cause gives one more temporary effect slot ). I am ready to move towards Wheel clan and convince their king to end up his exile , so I can change dwarves fate
