ArcheAge S is hype, but if they don't fix the power gap, it’s DOA. (A blueprint for the devs)

Look, like a lot of you, I was there for the magic of the 2013 ArcheAge launch. Hearing that Kim Kyung-tae is bringing the team back for ArcheAge S: Strait of Freedom as a PC-exclusive, true openworld sandbox is exactly what we've been begging for.

But lets be real If they dont address vertical power scaling and the predatory cash shop it's going to fail just like every other modern MMO that tries to do a sandbox

Here’s what I honestly think needs to happen if they want casuals, solo pirates, and hardcore guilds to actually coexist

1. Cap the gear advantage at 20% We’ve all seen what happens in games like Albion Online when massive vertical tiers (like 8.4 gear) exist A whale swipes their card, gets a 60% to 100% mathematical advantage, and just auto-deletes under-geared players without a single ounce of skill It completely ruins the sandbox and drives casuals away from trade routes.

If they cap the difference between a standard F2P endgame player and a maxed out whale , it gives hardcore players a noticeable edge, but keeps it tight enough that a coordinated 3 man casual crew running a trade pack can still outplay and kill a solo whale.

2. Give us true action combat and physical hitboxes Tab target always favors the guy with the bigger spreadsheet numbers. If we want that tight 20% gear gap to actually work, we need a crosshair based action combat system like we had in TERA.

Think about it if you have to physically aim skillshots and rely on active i-frame dodges (honestly, anyone who has sunk thousands of hours into games like Monster Hunter Freedom Unite or Iceborne knows exactly how much a well timed dodge levels the playing field a missed swing does zero damage, no matter how much the weapon cost. Imagine high-seas boarding parties where you’re physically Dodging attacks and reacting to the battle instead of just mashing your AOEs and using the ship’s mast to break line of sight.

3. Monetize cosmetics, not stats Publishers love stat bloat because its an easy cash grab But games like League and Mobile Legends prove you can make billions on cosmetics alone if the core loop is fair. Since ArcheAge is a physical sandbox, they should just go all in on visual flexes:

  • Ships: Sell custom sails, glowing hulls, and figureheads that don't change the ship's speed or HP.
  • Housing: Premium blueprints (cozy cottages, gothic mansions), animated furniture, unique lighting. People will pay just to flex on their neighbors passing by.
  • Mounts & Gliders: Keep the baseline speeds uniform, but sell sick visual skins (spectral horses, steampunk glider wings).

If XLGames lets whales buy insurmountable stats again, this game is going to bleed out just like the post-Hiram era. But if they enforce a tight gear gap, add fluid action combat, and stick to cosmetic monetization, we might actually get the golden era of sandbox MMOs back.

TL;DR: Keep gear gaps to a fair amount, use TERA style action combat with proper i-frames and only sell cosmetics like ship sails and housing items. Let skill dictate who survives the ocean.

What do you think would a strict cosmetic only shop be enough to keep a modern MMO afloat, or are publishers too addicted to P2W mechanics to even try?

Possible to play the original ArcheAge?

While digging through my old accounts, I found out that I have played the game extensively many years ago.

But I can't seem to find how to play the original game. I used to log in through Glyph (where I also purchased a lot of packs).

Can someone be kind enough to point me to the right European site?
I found this https://na.archerage.to/
but it seems to be NA site and EU does not work. Is there only one?

24M / PC - Looking for a few people to play ArcheRage and do faction PvP with

Hey, I'm 24M and I've been spending most of my gaming time lately on ArcheRage, an ArcheAge private server.

I'm mainly looking for a few people who might enjoy playing it with me, especially if you're into sandbox MMOs, faction PvP, sieges, raids, and the kind of messy MMO politics that happen when different groups are competing over the same objectives.

I play on the Eastern faction.

There are actually plenty of people on our side, including players from the US, China, Korea, and other regions. The problem is that our side isn't nearly as organized in PvP as the Western faction.

A lot of the time we have enough people to fight, but we don't have great coordination or many experienced English-speaking shot-callers. Because of that, we're currently struggling in raids, sieges, and larger faction fights.

What makes it interesting to me is that the situation doesn't feel hopeless.

During NA hours especially, the West isn't always overwhelmingly strong. There are plenty of times where I feel like a good group could actually make the fights competitive.

Unfortunately, after losing for a while, some people on our side have become pretty discouraged and don't even bother showing up for PvP sometimes.

That's part of why I'd like to find a few more people to play with.

I'm not an admin, server staff, or a guild recruiter. I'm not trying to build some huge community either. I'm genuinely just looking for people who might enjoy playing alongside me and getting involved in the faction fights.

You don't need to be experienced. New players are completely fine.

If you already have PvP experience, enjoy playing tank, or have experience with raid leading / shot-calling, that's definitely a bonus, but it's not required.

Mostly I'm looking for people who enjoy:

  • Large-scale PvP
  • Sieges and raids
  • Faction rivalries and MMO politics
  • Sandbox MMOs
  • Playing the underdog instead of always joining the strongest side

The game client is English-based.

I also want to be upfront that I can't personally promise to teach or gear everyone from scratch, but I can at least help point you in the right direction if you decide to try it.

If the idea of joining the weaker side of an ongoing faction war and seeing what happens sounds fun to you, feel free to message me.

Even if it's just one or two people, it'd be nice to have some more people to actually play and fight with.

Looking for a Freshstart. Going to try ArcheRage.EU.

I've been playing Archerage.NA since the day it launched and I love it! But I've done everything! I've maxed out all my professions, I have more gold than I know what to do with, I just have no more goals or achievements to work towards.

I desperately want a new Freshstart server, but it doesn't look like we're going to get one anytime soon. So I've decided to download and try the ArcheRage.EU server.

I'm thinking it'll be a real challenge! I'll be starting from scratch with a brand new character, on an existing, well established server with all of the punishing restrictions (such as no labor use until level 52) firmly in place.

That's OK though, that's the kind of challenge I'm craving.

So if anybody has played on this server, are there any major differences between NA and EU? Or are the two servers exactly the same?

One final question, will the EU version create its own separate folders to store things on my PC? Cause I don't want it to overwrite any of my ArcheRage.NA folders or documents.

Edit: Well, I took the plunge and downloaded the EU server. The game has installed itself in a separate folder on my C: drive, which is good, but both versions seem to be sharing the same CFG files and other data in the Documents folder and I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not.

First impressions: I'm experiencing more lag than I normally do in the NA server, especially when it comes to cut scenes and loading screens, but I can live with it.

There are a lot more players in the starting zones than I'm used to. I even saw a few low level players, which is extremely uncommon on the NA server.

Everything else seems to be pretty much the same. It's really strange starting with nothing again, but it's good fun :D
