Avios beginner... worth redeeming for this Miami flight?!

Hi everyone,

I’m looking to book a return flight from London to Miami in July. Right now the fare on the British Airways website is about £880 for Economy.

I currently have:

  • 126,000 Amex Membership Rewards points (Amex Gold)
  • 13,000 Avios

I checked reward availability and there are no reward seats available for the outbound flight on my dates. However, the return from Miami is showing as available for around 9,000 Avios + £325.

I’ve never redeemed Avios before, so I’m trying to understand what the smartest option would be here.

Would you recommend:

  • converting my Membership Rewards points to Avios and using them toward the BA booking,
  • booking the outbound as cash and only using Avios for the return,
  • or doing something else entirely?

Any advice from people more experienced with Avios redemptions would be really appreciated. Thanks!

Ongoing Avios promotion May 2026

What is your guy's strategy for the current "up to 50% more Avios for purchase" promo?

I am fairly new to Avios purchasing, I mainly collect it through my flights and Revolut account, so I'm curious what do you do when such a promo appears?

What do you recommend for beginners?

My main usage for my Avios is to upgrade my Economy Conviniece ticket to Business once in a while between Doha and Tokyo.

Help with Avios spending

Hi all, I currently have just over 100k avios points and I want to utilise them the best I can. I live in the North of England and BA only fly out of the country from London (which is a long drive but I'd do it if I have to) however, can I transfer them to a different airline to fly out of Manchester? I want a medium haul business class flight, Dubai, New York, somewhere hot anyways.

What are my best options? Is it best to book through AMEX or tasnfer to a different airline to get the best deals and should you book at certain times to get an even better deal? Sorry i'm new to all of this

TIA

The best/cheapest way to extend expiring 8300 point in Finnair

Hello
I will appreciate your advice on how to cheaply extend expiring 8300 points in Finnair. I used 6500 points before for an urgent flight to Poland and it was a convenient since buying tickets would be very unreasonably expensive. Anyway it would be nice to keep those points, although I now that it is only enough for a short distance flight in eu

Any ideas on how to do it? I checked buying directly from Finnair but seems a bit expensive.
Thanks

Can't search Business Class flights with Avios?

I've been trying to do normal flight search on the Qatar Airways website and app for weeks. Neither search will show me any flights with avios prices. They get stuck showing me the monthly calendar with certain dates listed as "available" for business class or economy, but if I click a date (or input a single date on the normal flight search page), it goes in circles back to this monthly calendar page and won't produce the search result page with individual flights listed (where you would choose and book a flight). Anyone else having this problem?

Redeeming Japan reward flight

Hi there,

I’m looking to redeem my Avios to go from London to Tokyo Economy return in May next year. I will be booking on the Avios app.

Once the date for outbound flight is available, it is likely that it will be too soon to book the return flight. Does that mean I would have to book both separately? Or should I wait until the return date is available?

Additionally, am I able to find JAL reward flights on the Avios app?

Has anyone received the 20% bonus avios for nectar to avios auto transfer from last month?

I did various tranches of nectar to avios auto transfers last month when this 20% bonus avios promotion was running but I am still yet to receive the bonus in my Avios account. I know this usually comes in later but would expect to receive it by now so was wondering if anyone else had yet?

Anyone Actually Done This i24 Slots Avios Offer Successfully?

https://preview.redd.it/olo6f2w15k1h1.png?width=658&format=png&auto=webp&s=3ce8d1f7f3fb9c3c560ddcb11f6441136af93c89

Was browsing Avios for Thoughts earlier and spotted this i24 Slots offer giving nearly 2,000 Avios points for signing up and depositing just €25. Apparently it’s boosted at the minute and finishes tomorrow night at midnight.

The instructions genuinely seem ridiculously simple:

  1. Open a new i24 Slots account
  2. Register with valid details
  3. Make a first deposit of at least €25

That’s it?

Am I missing some massive catch here or is this genuinely one of the easiest Avios hauls going? I know sometimes these casino offers have mad wagering requirements hidden away somewhere, or the points mysteriously never track properly.

I’m not even bothered about gambling with the €25. I’d probably just leave it sitting there if possible. The Avios are the only reason I’m looking at it.

Has anyone here actually done this exact offer successfully and received the Avios?
How long did the points take to track/post?
Did you actually have to gamble the deposit or was depositing enough?

Feels almost too good to be true for nearly 2k Avios

Surely you're joking, BA.

Searched for award flight from Washington to Bologna. BA will take me to London and Iberia will take me to Bologna, but only if I get myself from LHR to MAD. This has to be the dumbest award I've ever seen on offer.

Edit- NYC not Washington. I was searching multiple routes.

Household Avios soon to expire

We have a household account with 4 members (2 adults and 2 kids), with about 7,500 Avios in each account, about 30k total.

No plans to use these, and they are all set to expire in a couple of months, so I am trying to figure out how to extend the expiration, or even just offload them somehow.

I know I can use the shopping portal, but that's sort of a pain, logging in and out for 4 different accounts, and then buying things we don't want or need.

Someone mentioned aviosforthoughts.com, but the link to sign up seems dead. Plus, this would only be for the adults -- apparently kids don't qualify.

We could also transfer Chase UR to the 2 adult accounts, but again, that leaves the kids' accounts dormant and still open to expiration.

Any ideas?

EDIT: I should have mentioned, I am in the US, where it seems to be much more difficult to earn Avios through many of the methods folks suggested below. Thanks!

JAL/Cathay

I am trying to find reward availability for Hong Kong to Tokyo for spring next year, during Sakura time. Didn’t manage to get LHR-TYO in club at the midnight scramble but managed to get HK.

I waited patiently for T-355 and no availability appeared. It looks like there is availability either side of a window between 18th March to 28th March with nothing for either airline within that window.

Can I assume all the seats in this window have been snagged? Or is it usual for them to block during this period?

EDIT: nothing on Qatar or Finnair for those dates either

Absolute win with a Qatar booking

Had an email from Qatar that they’d released a bunch of reward seats. I have a stack of Avios from a BA credit card and was able to book myself and my SO, in Business Class, London Heathrow to Auckland return for £1,900 + 538,000 Avios early next year.

Absolutely thrilled 🤩 I’d resigned myself to not being able to get the two of us on one reward flight booking.

Should note I had to book London/Doha and Doha/Auckland separately as the full trip wasn’t available in one go

Credit Card Discussion

Hi guys, young professional here looking to maximise Avios gains and wanted some advice on what direction makes the most sense for me.

I’m based in the UK, earn around £30k/year, and currently have the Amex Gold card. I’ve had it for just over a year and through referrals + spending I now sit at just over 90,000 Membership Rewards points. I plan to convert all of these to Avios points.

I’m now debating whether Gold is still the best long-term setup for me, or whether I should move toward a more Avios-focused card strategy.

Current options I’m considering:

  • Keep the Amex Gold and stay as is.
  • Switch to the free BA Amex and purchase the Barclaycard Avios Plus.

My yearly card spend is roughly £16k-17k and I plan to only use the points on British Airways travel.

From what I can tell, the Barclaycard Avios Plus seems stronger for pure Avios earning, especially with wider Mastercard acceptance, but I’m unsure what makes most sense at my income/spend level or if there are other alternative combinations/elements to consider.

Would appreciate any advice from people in similar situations or anyone deeper into the points game.

Thanks

How To Optimise Points Most Efficiently

Hi guys

I appreciate there’s countless other posts querying this but I have some quite narrow wishes for my points which I would massively appreciate any help with. I’m pretty new to Amex and flight upgrades more generally. If anyone can help me I’d be more than happy to send flowers as a thank you!

Me and my gf are planning on going to South Africa in the new year and i will be proposing to her on this holiday.

Edit. further context: Looking v quickly a London-Cape Town return flight in Jan is £700-£1k pp in economy. Premium economy c.£1.5k-£2k. Biz £3k-£4k.

In an ideal world, I’d really like to get us 2x business class seats from London to Cape Town including return as cheap as possible, ideally by just using points. 1st class would obviously be amazing but I suspect that’s a non starter!

  1. What is the most efficient way of utilising points? Do I book flights economy and pay using my Amex through their system, and then use the points to upgrade direct with the airline?
  2. Is there a particular airline that converts points best on this route? I’d be open to a quick economy flight to e.g. Schipol if it enables us to get the upgrade for the bulk of the journey.
  3. Do I bother getting my partner to get a BA free Amex for the companion voucher? Or is it too late/incompatible with what I want.
  4. Would anyone recommend using the points for economy seats but I bid for an upgrade closer to the time.
  5. Does anyone have any suggestions to boost my points easily/cheaply. I’ve thought about referring her to my gold Amex to get some bonus points. I also have a limited company for any consulting I do. So could I get better referral points by referring myself or her for a gold business card? Any other ideas would be great!

Any other suggestions I really welcome, if anyone can help me I owe you big time!

Thanks

Best use of Points and Vouchers

Hi All,

I am looking for the best way to spend my points and vouchers for long haul trip with my partner sometime next year. I want to use them to book business class flights to a nice holiday destination - flexible with location but want a long haul flight to maximise the value

I will have 2 Avios Cabin Upgrade Vouchers in a few months time through my Barclays accounts

I will also have 2 companion vouchers through the BA Amex (but believe they cannot be combined with cabin upgrade vouchers)

We currently have 150k avios and should be getting more as I am fully on the avios collection grind

I am aware we need to plan this well in advance to get reward business flights and it can also vary based on location hence want advice and suggestion from people who have done this.

Thanks!

Changing origin point of return after outbound flown?

We are flying to Miami from London on Avios using a two for one voucher. We don’t have a real return leg to book back to London, so we’re planning on picking a random JFK return in the hopes it gets cancelled / changed and then we can book whatever return we want from North America.

I know the theory of ‘open jaw’ in that as long as the distance between the arrival and departure airports are the shortest you can change your return leg but can’t actually find it in writing.

Has anyone done this before successfully AFTER departure? Bonus points if you can share the most frequently changed date/time for an Avios flight destination like JFK!

Got emails but no points?

Made a ton of bookings last year for a big trip. Trip ended over a month ago and I have had various points credited. All good

Received three emails over the last couple of days saying the points will be credited and they normally arrive the following day but nothing this time?

Anyone else seeing that problem?
