Interesting badminton physics: Shuttlecock velocity decay after smash and slice shots

Came across this paper on shuttle aerodynamics:
Shuttlecock velocity decay after smash and slice shots in badminton
Eric Collet, 2026
https://doi.org/10.1088/1402-4896/ae5361
A few interesting takeaways:

  • Shuttle loses about half its speed every ~3.35 m.
  • Some court distances for reference:
    • Back line to Net: ~7 m
    • Short service line to Net: ~2 m
    • Back line to Own short service line: ~5 m
    • Back line to Opponent's short service line: ~9 m
    • Back line to Opponent's back line: ~13 m
  • A 500 km/h smash from the back line is already around 250 ~125 km/h at the net, and about 125 ~30 km/h by the opponent's back line.
  • Attack: Shows the importance of taking the shuttle early.
    • A huge smash from the back court is effectively similar to hitting a smash about half as fast from around mid court. Taking it even farther forward (around the service line) is effectively much faster again because the shuttle hasn't had time to bleed off as much speed.
  • Defense: Shows the importance of deep lifts.
    • Increasing the shuttle's flight from 10 m to 11.5 m increases the defender's reaction time from about 440 ms to 660 ms (~50% more time). Only 1.5 m farther, but a huge difference.
  • Slices (right-handed players): Normal slice gives the shuttle its natural counter-clockwise spin. Reverse slice initially spins it the opposite way. As the shuttle returns to its natural spin, some forward kinetic energy is transferred into rotation. As a result, reverse slices slow down more than normal slices, in addition to the deception.

Interesting seeing actual numbers behind common coaching advice like lift deeper, take the shuttle early, contact the shuttle as high and as far forward as possible etc. The paper also goes into the physics in much more detail, with some interesting graphs on shuttle speed decay, time of flight, slice vs. reverse slice, and feather vs. plastic shuttlecocks.
Edit: corrected some calculation mistakes I made

Calling all Night Owls & Graveyard Shift Warriors! Late night Palo?

Badminton shoes for beginners

Hello! I’ve been using NB shoes for my badminton games lately. Medyo nacoconscious na ako for using non-badminton shoes sa court. What can you recommend?

I’m 5,11, 70kg, hindi naman din wide feet ko (if that matters). Budget is like 2-3k. May mga nakikita ako online like kawasaki pero parang motor haha jk.

Thanks!

Lining shoes

Hi guys, is anyone still up? I just wanted to ask which Li-Ning shoes you would recommend. I’m currently deciding between:

* Li-Ning Thunder II Pro
* Li-Ning Saga III Pro
* Li-Ning Halberd III Lite

My ankle has been hurting even though I’ve been doing ankle exercises. Any recommendations? Salamat po!

Created a badminton match tracking app for Garmin!

So I created a Garmin app for Badminton: Badminton Go. It tells you your current score and serve side/your position at a single glance. It supports singles/doubles format matches. After each point, you just need to swipe up or down (or press up or down) based on which team got that point. I've designed the layout from scratch and just wanted some feedback from players if it actually helps them reduce the cognitive load of remembering scores and figuring out serve side? It can be downloaded from this link: https://apps.garmin.com/en-US/apps/58a3a8cc-b48d-431e-8575-3e06cc450cb6

Play and Game series

Planning to buy a new racket, i’m an intermediate player whose play style is more on back court attacking. Just wondering if the play series is really different from the game series? Or if you have any other brands with similar specs or recommendations? Thanks!

Does it matter where I restring

Hi! It's my first time having my racket restrung. I have an Apacs NFS 722 and I plan to restring it with BG65ti at 22 lbs.

Does it matter where I get it restrung? Has anyone tried stringing at Robinsons Magnolia (Olympic Village or Sportsline)? I plan to restring it here because it is near where I play. How was your experience, and will I actually feel a difference depending on where I get it restrung? (For reference I'm just a beginner)

Personal Trainer around Fairview

I’m currently looking for a personal/private trainer around Fairview to coach me and my friend. Pareho kaming beginner sa badminton and we’d like to learn proper fundamentals, footwork, strokes, etc.

May alam ba kayo? Currently looking at LBTC Larson’s, but won’t hurt to have more options.

Thanks

Hello, does any have the same experience with me? I bought Apacs Nano Fushion Speed 722 sa blsportsbadmintonhallicph (shopee) and it’s been one week since my parcel has departed from
Shah Alam sorting centre and after that wala ng update. Should I cancel or hintayin ko nalang dumating. Nag alala kasi ako baka may damage na if dumating. Tia
