How to precisely reproduce engraving design with pencil

I am interested in replicating—using a pencil—the technique engravers use to shade banknote portraits.

How can one achieve high precision when drawing curves (ensuring they look harmonious and consistent in curvature) and how to draw lines very close together? and not drawing them crooked?

French curves, magnifying glasses, etc.?

Obviously the precision of an engraver cannot be matched, and that the result can be further refined using vector software
