Favorite Legends of the Dark Knight story?

Man I absolutely love pretty much every LotDK story from the first 100ish issues (minus flyer) so it’s a difficult question for me. but I’m wondering what people one here think.

if I had to pick one I’d personally say “Prey” but some of my other favorites are “gothic”, “faces”, and “engines”.

What’s the art style for Batman Arkham asylum and kingdom come called?

I recently read Batman: Arkham asylum after being recommended it. I’m more of a marvel guy so I borrowed it from my brothers collection of Batman, comics .It’s the same style or at least a similar style to Kingdom come another DC comic. I was just wondering what the art style for both of these books were called, anyone know?

Question on Tynion's Detective Comics run

So I just started reading Tynion's run on Detective Comics and have a few questions about characters and continuity; I'm about 8 issues in. Since the start of Rebirth, I've really only read half of Tom King's run so I have some questions on the characters presented in here:

  • Kate as Batwoman - was she introduced prior to this run? They give a lot of backstory so I feel like I'm jumping right in but am totally okay.
  • Robin - Is there a current Robin anywhere? Tim is Red Robin, but where is Damian in this continuity?
  • Barbara Gordon is not in this run, at least not yet, but it doesn't seem like she'll appear - what happened to her as Batgirl/Oracle?
  • Luke Fox as Batwing - I had never heard of this character prior to reading this run; anything I need to know?

I've jumped around a lot the past few years between New 52 and the early 2000s and the 90s so sometimes the different continuities get mixed up in my head. Please try to avoid spoilers if they spoil other post-Tom King stuff, but I guess I don't mind too much since I don't plan on reading much of that. I hear Tynion's main Batman run isn't that great (but I might give it a chance one day).

Are editors a problem?? Do they not care about fans??

To me it seems they don’t care about the fans only shock value and variant covers all for profit but can’t respect the lore the way things are. They kill people off in stupid decisions and thing the fans are stupid for questioning their decision. I don’t want comics that are total fan service but you have to care about the fans and respect them and the lore. I don’t want comics that are solely about profit above all else.

They keep messing with Batman. He needs Alfred & he is supposed to be a brooding and emotionally distant person (and yet you can still have silent of stories made with that person yes non-BATDAD Bruce can still be someone you can write a ton of stories for and he can grow as a person to an extent but he is mission first and while he does CARE and can show he cares he is far from emotionally loving and affectionate. He is too scarred for that and that scarring from seeing his parents death at the hands of a criminal is what fuels him. I dont want him to loose that. I don’t want good dad Bruce who relates to his kids jokes and has fun with them and is the every dad people want to have for their own dad. he needs to be someone who has trouble expressing his feelings he need to not be the affectionate warm BATDAD. You want BATDAD go to WFA. Comics batman needs to be more focused more mission oriented and while he cares Alfred is the better dad and so is Dick.)

A hopeful upbeat guy misses the point of everything. Yes with Dick he was more fun and hopeful but also was younger and his misson had just begun. As time has gone on his mission weighs on him is has zapped any joy any possibility of completing his mission and retiring. He knows he is in this to the end. Yet the biggest development stories AREN‘T about BRUCE they are about DICK, and JASON, and TIM, and DAMIAN, and Barbara and everyone else. That they can become better and not become like him is the greatness. {I love Damian the abused he whole life boy raised as an assassin come to live with his father who dick was the first to so real love to. THAT relationship should be explored more Dick as a father to him. But I would LOVE to see real growth in Damian and not see him always regress back to demon brat when new authors come in. I want to see Dick help him become the hopeful boy he can be. The most wonderful Robin and maybe one day the best of all of them. I think I would prefer Dick as Batman and Damian become the new nightwing. But Damian can grow so much. Tim can grow too if someone would actually let him. I think Jason could grow too. (I prefer the helmeted Jason). And stop raping Dick no one deserves to be raped no matter who they are!!}

The juxtaposing of his brooding and emotionally distant character against the happier and more loving and emotionally available other members of the family, which is getting a bit too big I mean they can’t even fit them all in the same story or story are often and they dont have there own books took shine in, make the Batman comics compelling. He doesn’t have to get over his parents death or change into super dad he can be mediocre but well meaning and care and give purpose and direction to them but still be a broken man while they have healed.

I think back to BTAS, yes a cartoon but here me out, and they had censors that prevent some of what they wanted but it force them to get creative and in the end made for better stories. I argue even the comics codes, while they could have been less strict, did force writers to be more creative. Having guardrails does that it forces you to zero in on things and really get good stories. With no guardrails for decades they stories have suffered. With no limits to what can be done editors push for more and more and ever writer try to push to see haw far they can take things. Perhaps rules are a good thing.

Grant Morrison Batman

So I’m looking to get the Grant Morrison Batman Omni’s, I just want to know what’s everything I need to know about them before I buy them without spoilers.

My main questions are:
Are they worth it?
Are they really the best Batman Omni’s?
Is it weird?

Best Batman stories centered around underrated villains?

Villains like Zsasz, Calendar Man, Firefly, Killer Moth, Clayface, Pyg, Mad Hatter, and shiva just to name a few that come to mind. Feel free to recommend good comics with villains not included on this list, as long as they aren’t the usual rogues you find lately.

New to Batman Comics

I’m looking to start reading Batman Comics but there are so many to choose from. What’s the best order if there is one to read them or main storylines to read first?
Also are there Omnibuses or Compendiums to make it easier buying less books?

Top 25 Batman Stories! (Day 2)

Unsurprisingly, Batman: Year One by Frank Miller and David Mazzucheli was the winner! Easily Batman's definitive origin, Year One continues to be one of the most popular and influential stories in the character's long history. Containing perhaps the single greatest depiction of Jim Gordon ever put to page, Year One expertly portrays the struggle of being one of the only honest cops in Gotham City. Arguably no other comic has managed to convey just how corrupt and broken Gotham City truly is and why a vigilante like Batman is desperately needed.

Now which Batman story will take second place? Comment and vote below!

Batman discusses the Holiday Killer with Harvey and Gordon before having to stop Scarecrow and Mad Hatter (Batman: The Long Halloween #10).

I do think the amount of Two-Face foreshadowing for Harvey was way too much, honestly, and I think his discussion with Batman was kind of rushed (although maybe that was the point?). I do like how Batman was hesitant to work with Catwoman, as this is when he isn’t working with many people and hasn’t met Robin yet. His only allies are Harvey, Gordon, and Alfred.

Gotham City: Year One is amazing.

As someone who is not a fan of Tom Kings Batman at all it sad to me how little this book is discussed. It’s an incredible Noir detective story that follows PI Slam Bradley decades before Bruce was born, as he uncovers a conspiracy involving Bruce’s grandparents. It far and away the most “noir” Gotham has ever been, it has the vibe of “double indemnity” and “sunset boulevard” if they were set in Gotham.

I know a lot of people are down on Tom Kings writing but man this is one of his best books and the art is fantastic. It makes me hope Phil Hester draws a main Batman run in the future.

If you have not checked this out it gets a deluxe edition in August and imo is a must read Gotham City story.

[Discussion] Which Batman run did you enjoy more: Year One, The Long Halloween, or Dark Victory?

After about a 15-year hiatus, I recently got back into comic books. The Absolute line—especially Absolute Batman—is what pulled me back in.

I read Year One, The Long Halloween, and Dark Victory back to back, and I can honestly say all three are 10/10. If I had to rank them, I’d probably go:

The Long Halloween
Dark Victory
Year One

I’m currently reading Hush and Under the Red Hood, and after that I’m planning to jump into Scott Snyder’s Court of Owls run.
What Batman run should I tackle after that? I’d love to hear your thoughts on writers like Scott Snyder, Grant Morrison, Tom King, Chip Zdarsky, James Tynion IV, or anyone else you’d recommend.

Hi, im new here

Longtime Batman fan who was transfixed by Batman 89 as a kid etc. However as crazy as it sounds im just now getting into comics/graphic novels mainly because I found figuring out the various runs etc confusing early on.

Im starting with Batman Year One and have already purchased some of the other highly recommend comics. However I'm totally taken in by Absolute Batman and might just see this through unless anyone suggests I should start with other ones?

Glad to be here 🫡🫡🫡

My Batman collection after 7 months

Howdy y’all. I upgraded my Batman collection again so why won’t show it off? I’m really proud of what I’ve built and I’ll try to read it all this year and maybe keep buying new books. Any thoughts on how I could improve it?

Searching for my White Whale of variant covers….

❗️HAVE YOU SEEN THIS MAN???❗️

After three years of watching resale sites and scouring the internet as best I can—

(which is awfully difficult; does anyone else feel like it’s harder than it used to be to find things on the internet?)

—I have come to the conclusion that if I’m ever going to get my hands on the one variant I want more than anything, I’m going to have to start networking 😂

So here I am throwing up my first post. I guess I am putting out a call of sorts: does anyone have this Red Hood 1:50 incentive variant of Knight Terrors: Robin #2 (2023) by Jorge Corona? Alternatively, have you seen it at a shop near you? PLEASE let me know if you have seen it or have a copy you are at all willing to part with!

Obviously I am willing to pay a pretty penny for it; in fact I believe its companion (the Tim Drake variant of #1) is going for for a minimum of a hundred bucks rn. I do also have a small handful of cool titles/variants I would be willing to trade if that is more desirable to you for some reason.

Truthfully at this point I feel like I’d give my first born child to someone who could hook me up or even point me in the right direction, though for legal reasons that is a joke.

I’ll be posting in other communities more specific to trading eventually, but I don’t have any reputation yet and had to start somewhere. 😅

If you got this far, THANK you for reading all that!! stay cool ✌️✌️😙

What should I read after Batman: A Lonely Place of Dying?

So I have just finshed reading A Death in the Family and A Lonely Place of Dying and I feel a bit lost.

I have seen many recommendations on Reddit but I couldn't tell which is best, and it doesn't seem like there are any recommendations that are fixed on one opinion.

I have always been interested into the Bat-family lore, and I really want to get into the Redhood storyline, I am also very interested into following up with Nightwing's journey!

Although, I believe I need to read more about other character arcs to straighten up the storyline for me before getting into the Redhood.

Considering how A Lonely Place of Dying left us with a new Robin I have seen many recommend getting into Tim Drake's beginning as Robin.

What would you recommend is the best order to go on with?

Did Batman And Robin Prevent Bane From Remaining A Top Tier Batman Villain, Or Was Bane Much More Effective As A One Shot Villain?

Bane 1st made his appearance in Vengance Of Bane. A child born in Santa Priscas worst prison Pena Duro , Bane would train his body to its physical peak , read numerous books to sharpen his intellect, and made a name for himself by becoming Pena Duro's toughest prisoner. He would become a test subject for a supersteriod Venom - which had killed its previous test subjects. Not only did Bane survive the experiment , he escaped Santa Prisca and arrived in Gotham City in the hopes to dominate the very being that had haunted his dreams : Batman. He actually came face to face with the Batman . While he did not fight Batman that night, Bane vowed to take The Dark Knight down, leaving before Batman could apprehend him. In the Knightfall Series, Bane hatched a plot to systematically wear Batman down. He caused an explosion at Arkham Asylum that allowed most of Batman's most dangerous foes to roam free in Gotham - causing Batman to push himself to apprehend the inmates. At Batman's weakest, Bane , having deduced Batman was Bruce Wayne , waited at Wayne Manor for Batman to arrive, proceeded to give Batman a viscious beating , and broke Batman's back - effectively taking him out of commission for many months and making Bane Gotham's undisputed crimelord. Banes success would be short lived , and Batman's stand in Jean-Paul Valley would beat Bane and have him incarcerated at Blackgate. Bane would later appear in many Batman stories , but was used less effectively. Bruce Timm of Batman The Animated Series has said in so many words or less that he found the idea of Bane breaking Batman ridiculous , and that he only reluctantly used him under pressure from Warner Brother, so Timm met them halfway and had Bane be a physical threat to Batman , but inevitably lose to him. Then the 1997 Batman And Robin came around with Bane as one of the villains. Unlike in the comics, this version was treated as dumb muscle , and it seems this interpretation stuck in the animated films and cartoons , and even , to an extent the comics. Bane didn't seem much of a threat anymore. The Animated films had him taken down by Batman in quick succession, the comics had Bane suffer his most devastating defeat at the hands of Thomas Jagger , and the Arkham games - with the exception of Arkham Origins , treated Bane as a glorified joke. It was only the Dark Knight Rises that got Bane back to somewhat of a formidable threat , and with the release of the animated film Batman Knightfall, there is every possibility that Bane can be seen as a main threat. My question is, did Batman And Robin ruin Bane's chances of being a top tier foe, or should Banes story have ended at Knightfall?
