Dentist Recommendations

My old dentist (located in NW DC) is no longer taking my insurance and I’m looking for a new practice that is trustworthy and doesn’t upsell or rush to do procedures. I had a bad experience at one of those PE-owned places that told me I had several cavities that needed filling, only to get a second opinion and be told I had literally no cavities. Any recs?

Backyard 40th in Bethesda, catering headcount check

Planning a small 40th birthday for my husband at our place in Bethesda next month. Around 28 adults, no kids.

Emailed a few places nearby to get quotes for hot food and server help for 4 hours. Got prices back from Spilled Milk Catering, Corcoran, and a local taco truck setup. The numbers range anywhere from $45 to $110 a head before tax, which feels like a huge spread for under 30 people.

For anyone who did catered stuff at home in the area recently, how many appetizers per person did you order so people weren't starving before dinner? Trying to figure out if we drop staff or trim the menu.

Wanted, kind dog-loving person with some time on their hands

I have an older, adorable dog named Gulliver who is being treated for a serious skin infection. He is on an aggressive course of medication and really shouldn't be spending such a long day alone while he recovers.

I'm looking for a kind, reliable person who might be able to spend an hour or two with him during the day — sit with him, give him some company and affection, and perhaps take him outside. This isn't really a dog-walking job. What he needs most right now is a friend/dog angel. This is a big fight but we can win it.

Because of his skin infection, he should not be around other dogs.

I'm in Bethesda, on Battery Lane. I would be very grateful to hear from anyone who might be interested, or who knows a kind dog-loving person who might be.

Thank you from Gulliver and me.,,

Suggestions for Peace Offering After Pranking Annoying Neighbor

My neighbor across the street has gotten on my nerves for years. He nitpicks everything about the way we keep our yard, tells his guests it’s okay to use our driveway when they visit, has floodlights aimed at our house, etc. I could go on and on. I recently found a good way to repay him. When he and his family went to the beach a couple weeks ago, I took a photo of his house and had AI make it look totally engulfed in fire. Flames from the roof and windows, firefighters on ladders pickaxing away, hoses spraying water everywhere—the whole works. I texted it to him and asked if his alarm system had alerted him to the big fire. The picture clearly had the watermark of the AI service, but in his panic I guess he missed it. He called me all hysterical. I heard his wife in the background screaming about the dog they left at home with a dog sitter. I let him go on for a bit and told him at least he didn’t need to worry about neighbors’ houses because it looked like only his was being destroyed, but I eventually told him it was all just a prank. He didn’t take it well. At all. In the two weeks since this happened he’s telling everyone about it and has made me a pariah in my own neighborhood—in which, by the way, I have lived way longer than he has—all because he can’t take a joke. Anyway, I am now starting to feel I should try to make it up to him and am thinking of getting him a fruit basket or something like that. Any suggestions of a local place where I can get a decent gift like this for under $50?

Capital Crescent Trail

Cyclists want motorists to treat them like pedestrians on roads, but plenty don’t extend that same courtesy to runners (or walkers) on the CCT — riding too fast or blowing by without warning. Am I the only one who feels this way?

Possibly taking new job in Ballston as mid-30s couple from Bethesda also starting a family soon. Pros/cons to the move?

We're currently living in a 2BR apartment in downtown Bethesda in a nice apartment rent 4k+. I'm interviewing for a job in Ballston that I may take with a large salary increase. I'm looking at neighborhoods, schools, and general vibe and both seem pretty comparable in price and vibe (urban walkable center with metro surrounded by more dense suburbs, great schools). Anybody make this move and can weigh in on any surprises or tips? Think I can commute from Bethesda to Ballston daily over the Chain Bridge?

My Pop-Up Bagels Review

I went by the soft opening of Pop Up Bagels in Bethesda this morning.

They started out, not surprsingly, as a pop-up in Connecticut before going viral, moving to brick and mortar, and rapidly expanding due to a big VC push.

Their concept is small batches of fresh from the oven bagels dipped in tubs of cream cheese, instead of slicing and spreading. They only have a few bagel flavors, but lots of cream cheese flavors, so there are plenty of customization options.

The bagels themselves are small, about 2/3 the size of an average bagel place, but have a nice crunchy exterior and a fluffy interior, not nearly as dense and stodgy as many bagel places. They're really quite tasty.

And I'm probably never going back.

Why? An immensly boneheaded minimum order policy. An order of three bagels with a small tub of cream cheese for $15.60 is the smallest order you can get. In some locations, the minimum order is six.

That's right, you can't go to the store and grab a single bagel with cream cheese, and about 90% of the time I'm going to a bagel place, that's what I want to get.

It's truly baffling to me, but they keep expanding, so either there aren't many people that share my concerns, or VC is keeping them propped up until they fail. Who knows.

All I know is that in the space of a few blocks, we have a Bethesda Bagels and a new Call Your Mother, both of whom make good bagels, and let me buy one if I so desire. I'll be going to those places instead.

Looking for affordable studio/1BD recommendations along the Red Line (Twinbrook–Friendship Heights)

Hi everyone!

I’m a recent graduate and will be starting a new job in DC on 9/1, so I’m currently looking for an apartment along the Red Line, ideally somewhere between Twinbrook and Friendship Heights, within walking distance of the metro station.

I’m looking for either a studio or 1 bd apartment, with a budget of around $2,000/month including utilities. Of course, the more affordable, the better! 😂

I’d really appreciate any recommendations for apartment buildings, complexes, or even smaller/private rentals that you’ve had a good experience with.

Thank you so much!

Best gyms with classes here in Bethesda?

I’m looking for a gym and ideally I don’t want to pay more than $110 a month.

I have a gym in my building right now but I’m honestly not very consistent with going 😭 I’ve realized that I like going to classes with other people because it actually motivates me to go, so that’s really the main reason I would pay for a gym.

I was looking into the YMCA because I was a member of the YMCA in New York and really liked it, so I was leaning towards doing that again. But I looked at the Google reviews for the YMCA Bethesda/chevy chase and they aren’t the best lol. I also went for a tour and the guy who gave me the tour was kind of an asshole 🙄 so that definitely didn’t help.
I’ve also been looking at HOTWORX. Has anyone tried it?

If anyone has recommendations for gyms with good classes that are around $110/month or less, please let me know! And if you’re a YMCA member, is it actually worth it? Is it the best bang for your buck?

Question about moving etc

Hesitant to post this because everyone knows a realtor, but does anyone have any personal recommendations?
We moved from the Northeast and have lived in downtown Bethesda for the past few years, mostly in apartments. We’re now looking to purchase something, but we’re not totally sure about the neighborhood or area yet.
We’re casually/semi-seriously looking before our lease ends. Work is in downtown Bethesda, but we’re also considering taxes, commute, and overall quality of life as we look at Northern Virginia, Chevy Chase, DC, and surrounding areas.
Thanks for any recommendations or insight!
