Hey r/horror!

To kick off a week of AMAs about my journey from studio horror to indie filmmaking and XR, today I’m diving deep into my years working on Hollywood Horror Films.

For nearly two years, I was Scott Derrickson’s right hand. On Sinister (2012), my official credit was Director’s Assistant and B Cam Supervisor (really the Second Unit Director with around 150 shots in the film), but I also wore another few secret hats: I edited four of the five Super 8 movies (everything except the opening hanging sequence) and I was in charge of all the computer technology in the film (creating all the screen recordings in the film where Ethan Hawke’s character investigates the murders, along with a graphic designer).

After Sinister, I worked as Scott’s Assistant in LA, eventually working on another film – Sony Screen Gems’ and Jerry Bruckheimer Films’ Deliver Us From Evil, and finally, helped organize and assemble the massive, interactive 1,000+ slide presentation and sizzle reels Scott used to land Marvel’s Doctor Strange

More recently (2022-2024), I spent two years at Supermassive Games as a Narrative Designer (contributing to the writing and performance direction) on the newly released Directive 8020: A Dark Pictures Game. Standard post-employment confidentiality means I can't take questions on the game itself, but I'm happy to discuss my wider games, VR, and film work. (But I’m very proud of my writing and performance directing work there so please go buy it and support Supermassive’s latest game!)

Why am I doing this now?

I’m pouring everything I learned about building cinematic dread from Scott and the studio system into my own upcoming independent horror feature, Follow the Dark. I’ve been trying to get it made since I was Scott’s assistant. In 2023, we shot 90% of the film, and we are currently running a Kickstarter campaign to finish it. But that is very much in the background, and for today, let’s focus on Sinister and Big Budget Hollywood Studio Horror!

I’m an open book on my experience on Sinister, building tension, the reality of the studio assistant grind, editing horror, and more.

Obsession (2026) is a black comedy

To be fair, Curry Barker’s Obsession is undoubtedly a horror movie first (or at least upon first watch). Watching it the first time I was disturbed, anxious, and terrified. However, the film had a lot of dark funny moments. I guess it shouldn’t be surprising a former sketch comedy director/actor would end up including so much humor in their film.

It was the kind of film that just stayed with me such that I had to see it another time. Upon the second watch it felt much more familiar and while still disturbing in many ways, it felt much more like a black comedy upon the second watch. I found myself laughing out loud at moments the rest of the audience was probably feeling disturbed.

Black comedies can do that. For instance, as a big Ari Aster fan I knew he had a keen sense for including that kind of humor and I felt like the only one in my theater laughing at certain parts of Eddington (I don’t think that audience was much aware of Aster’s previous work).

It certainly seems like black comedy is becoming more mainstream see other recent hit The Drama. This seems to be more of a societal thirst as Kristoffer Borgli has had this style of humor across his films even before The Drama.

Black comedy films are some of the most fun to see at a theater because it always gets this extra punch of “you’re not supposed to laugh at this moment, your teacher just announced their child passed away and your friend gives you a diabolical look” type of moment. It’s funny how audiences almost seem hesitant to laugh until they hear someone else letting it out. You just won’t get the same feeling watching this at home on streaming. So I definitely encourage anyone to see Obsession while it is still in theaters. Also seeing it in Dolby makes a huge difference for the sound design so definitely choose that if you have the option.

We Saw "Obsession" and We Have Thoughts

There are very few moments in a horror fan's life that feel like witnessing something genuinely new. Obsession is one of them. Kelli, Leah, and I got ourselves to the theater this weekend and we have thoughts. Many, many thoughts. And possibly a new favorite movie of the year. Obsession is definitely a film worth seeing in a packed theater. It is scary, thoughtful, and ultimately HILARIOUS!

Free stuff from blumhouse

Has anybody ever gotten a free item or something signed from the blumhouse bus emails? I just got one for obsession in my email and I requested a free signed poster and lobby cards. I’m mostly wondering if I should expect it to show up in the mail in a few weeks or how does it work?

Obsession (spoilers)

Ive just watched the movie and DAMN.

Since it was a blumhouse movie I knew it would be good but damn that wasn’t expecting to be like this. I was just bored and scrolling on the movies available in the nearby theater and saw this one. Watched the trailer seemed interesting, good rating so yeah fuck it im in.

The whole movie was just overwhelming. The gory scenes, the continuous jump scares and the psychological horror was just perfect. The theater was almost full and everyone kept reacting throughout the whole movie.

Nikki gradually going from confused and having a split personality to going completely nuts was perfectly executed, the actors did an amazing job. This is one of the best horror movies I’ve seen in a while and the ending was just perfect. Beer realising he has no choice other than kill himself, tries the gun but couldn’t pull the trigger so he goes to where it all started, the damn pills that killed his cat, as he waits for his demise and you see him snap, the movie didn’t have to spell it out, just the look on his face and creepy music followed by the noise of wood snapping tells you what happened, Nikki used her wish to make bear fall madly in love with her just like he did to her. Its so good it actually makes you forget that he took a whole bottle of pills so when the overdose kicks in, it gives you yet another shock.

The movie is just perfect. And I think it will have sequels just like SMILE did, where every movie takes place in a whole new place with new people and the only common point is the one wish willow pack. Someone else will buy one and make a wish that he’ll regret. Maybe Nikki would make a cameo where we see her in a mental institute where she’s been put after she lost her mind because of the deaths of her friends and no one believes her story about some magical piece of wood that grants you any wish you want.

Anyway 10/10 movie, what did you guys think of it and would you want to see a sequel?
